Chapter 4: My Father's Final Secret
For several seconds, nobody in the ballroom spoke.
I stared at the yellowed document in Richard Cole's hands.
My father's handwriting was unmistakable. The letters leaned slightly to the right, just as they had on every birthday card he'd ever sent me.
But the words beneath his signature made my stomach turn.
"Read it," I whispered.
Richard adjusted his glasses.
"Your father established the Bennett Family Legacy Trust eleven years ago. The trust holds the controlling shares of Bennett Global Solutions, along with the original intellectual property rights and several associated investment assets.""
Daniel stepped forward.
"This is absurd. Robert specifically told me those shares were intended for the business.""
Richard didn't look at him.
"Mr. Bennett, your father-in-law made his intentions very clear.""
"Then why wasn't I informed?""
"Because you were never a beneficiary.""
A few people in the audience exchanged glances.
Vanessa slowly released Daniel's arm.
Richard continued.
"Mr. Robert Bennett appointed his daughter, Olivia, as the sole controlling beneficiary. He also included a succession clause. Should Olivia ever determine that her marriage or personal circumstances compromise the trust's interests, she may appoint an independent successor to oversee its assets.""
I looked up.
"An independent successor?""
"Yes. Your father wanted to ensure that no spouse, business partner, or outside investor could pressure you into surrendering control.""
Daniel laughed bitterly.
"Robert was paranoid. He didn't trust anybody.""
Richard finally turned toward him.
"Actually, Mr. Bennett, he didn't trust you.""
The words landed harder than a slap.
Daniel's face turned red.
"Get that man off the stage!""
Michael Harris stepped between Daniel and Richard.
"Nobody is removing anyone. This is now an official board matter.""
Daniel pointed at me.
"Olivia, you cannot seriously believe you're capable of running this company.""
I looked at him.
"Interesting. I was capable when you needed me to sell my mother's jewelry to pay your employees.""
He looked away.
Richard removed another document from the envelope.
"There's something else. Mr. Bennett requested that this letter be delivered personally to Olivia if any attempt was made to transfer the trust's shares without her consent.""
My throat tightened.
"Can I read it?""
"Of course.""
I unfolded the letter.
My dearest Olivia,
If you're reading this, someone has probably mistaken your kindness for weakness.
I stopped.
The ballroom seemed to disappear.
I could almost hear my father's voice.
I know you love deeply. I know you forgive people even when they don't deserve it. Those are beautiful qualities, but never allow anyone to convince you that they make you powerless.
My eyes burned.
I invested in Daniel because I believed you saw something good in him. But remember, sweetheart, I invested in your future, not in his ego.
I swallowed.
The company is yours to protect. And if the day comes when Daniel chooses his ambition over your dignity, don't hesitate to protect yourself.
At the bottom was his signature.
Robert Bennett.
I folded the letter carefully.
Daniel was staring at me.
"You're enjoying this, aren't you?""
I looked at the man I'd once planned to grow old beside.
"No, Daniel. I'm grieving.""
"For what?""
"For the years I wasted believing you were the man my father hoped you would become.""
Vanessa suddenly stepped forward.
"Can we stop pretending Olivia is some innocent victim?""
Everyone turned toward her.
She wiped her cheeks with a tissue.
"Daniel and I have been working on the company's future. We found investors. We secured new opportunities. Olivia hasn't been involved in operations for years.""
James raised an eyebrow.
"Perhaps you'd like to explain the consulting company receiving half a million dollars.""
Vanessa looked at Daniel.
He said nothing.
She tried again.
"Those payments were approved by Daniel.""
James opened another folder.
"Then you should have no difficulty explaining why several invoices contain descriptions of services that were never provided.""
Vanessa's hands began shaking.
"That's not my responsibility.""
"Your name is on the company registration.""
Daniel grabbed her elbow.
"Stop talking.""
She pulled away.
"Don't tell me to stop talking! You said everything was legal!""
A murmur spread through the audience.
I watched them turn on each other.
Eleven years earlier, I would have rushed to protect Daniel from embarrassment.
Tonight, I simply stood still.
Michael approached the microphone.
"Given the allegations and the ownership documents presented tonight, the board will immediately vote on a temporary suspension of Mr. Bennett's executive authority pending a full investigation.""
Daniel stared at him.
"You can't suspend me. I'm the CEO.""
"Your employment agreement allows the board to suspend an executive during a credible financial misconduct investigation," Michael replied.
Daniel looked around desperately.
"Nobody is voting against me.""
One director raised his hand.
Then another.
Then another.
Michael counted.
Five votes in favor.
One abstention.
Daniel had lost his authority.
His face became expressionless.
Then he looked directly at me.
"You think you've won?""
I didn't answer.
He leaned closer.
"You have no idea what your brother has done.""
My blood went cold.
"What does Nathan have to do with this?""
Daniel smiled faintly.
For the first time that evening, his expression wasn't arrogant.
It was calculating.
"Ask him why he came to me for money six months ago.""
Before I could respond, Richard closed the briefcase.
"Mrs. Bennett, I believe you should know that your brother's name appears on another document.""
He handed James a second envelope.
Inside was a photograph of Nathan shaking hands with Daniel.
The date printed on the back was six months earlier.

And beneath the photograph was a handwritten note.
Phase Two: Remove Olivia.
