Chapter 1: The Slap That Changed Everything
The sound of my husband's hand striking my face was louder than the orchestra playing behind us.
Two hundred people watched me crash backward into a champagne table.
Crystal glasses shattered against the marble floor. Champagne soaked my dress. A sharp piece of glass sliced my palm.
And my husband?
Daniel Bennett simply adjusted his cufflinks and told me to stop embarrassing him.
My name is Olivia Bennett. I'd been married to Daniel for eleven years, and until that evening, I still believed there was something worth saving in our marriage.
I was wrong.
The celebration was being held at the Grand Meridian Hotel in downtown Atlanta. Daniel's company, Bennett Global Solutions, had just announced its most profitable year since its founding.
Investors filled the ballroom. Executives wore expensive tuxedos. Waiters carried silver trays between tables decorated with white roses and crystal centerpieces.
Daniel was supposed to give the keynote speech at nine.
I had helped him prepare for that moment.
Eleven years earlier, when his company was nothing more than a rented office and three employees, I'd worked beside him without taking a salary. I'd handled contracts, negotiated with suppliers, and even sold my late mother's jewelry to cover payroll when the business nearly collapsed.
Daniel had promised me something back then.
"If we ever make it, Olivia, everything we build will belong to both of us.""
I remembered those words whenever things became difficult.
Apparently, he didn't.
I first noticed Vanessa Reed standing beside him near the stage.
She was twenty-nine, a marketing director Daniel had hired eight months earlier. Her blonde hair fell over one shoulder, and her red evening gown looked more appropriate for a private dinner than a corporate celebration.
But it wasn't her dress that caught my attention.
It was the necklace around her neck.
A diamond necklace.
My mother's necklace.
I'd discovered it missing from our bedroom two weeks earlier. Daniel had told me he'd sent it to a jeweler for cleaning.
Now it was resting against Vanessa's collarbone.
I approached them, keeping my voice low.
"Vanessa, where did you get that necklace?""
She touched the diamonds and smiled.
"Daniel gave it to me.""
I looked at my husband.
"Daniel, can we talk privately?""
He didn't even turn toward me.
"Not now, Olivia.""
"That's my mother's necklace.""
Vanessa laughed softly.
"Oh, this necklace? Daniel bought it for me. It's beautiful, isn't it?""
"That isn't yours.""
Her smile disappeared for half a second.
Then she leaned closer.
"Maybe if you were a better wife, he'd buy you something too.""
I felt my stomach tighten.
"Daniel, are you seriously going to let her speak to me like that?""
He finally looked at me.
His expression wasn't embarrassed.
It was irritated.
"Olivia, apologize to Vanessa.""
I stared at him.
"What?""
"You heard me. You approached her aggressively. Apologize.""
"For asking about my mother's jewelry?""
"You're making a scene.""
Vanessa lowered her eyes and pretended to wipe away a tear.
"I told you she hated me, Daniel. I didn't want to come tonight if she was going to treat me like this.""
Several people nearby had started watching.
I could hear the orchestra continuing, but the music suddenly seemed very far away.
"Daniel," I whispered, "she's wearing something that belonged to my mother.""
He stepped closer.
"Don't make me repeat myself.""
I pulled my arm away when he grabbed my wrist.
"No. I won't apologize to your mistress.""
His face changed.
For a moment, I saw the man I'd married. The man who used to hold my hand beneath restaurant tables and promise that we'd never become the kind of couple who humiliated each other.
Then his hand moved.
The slap came so quickly I barely understood what had happened.
My head snapped sideways.
My heel caught the edge of the carpet, and I stumbled backward into the champagne display.
The table collapsed beneath me.
Glasses shattered. Bottles rolled across the floor. Cold champagne soaked through my dress.
Someone gasped.
A woman screamed.
But nobody moved.
I remained on the floor, one hand pressed against the marble, feeling blood trickle from my palm.
Daniel looked down at me.
"Get up, Olivia. You're making this worse.""
Vanessa covered her mouth.
But I saw the smile behind her fingers.
"Maybe now she'll learn some respect," she said.
I slowly pushed myself upright.
My cheek burned. My knees trembled. My dress was ruined.
Daniel pointed toward the ballroom entrance.
"Go clean yourself up. And don't come back until you can behave like an adult.""
I looked around.
Two hundred people had witnessed what he'd done.
Some lowered their eyes. Others whispered. A few had their phones raised.
Then I looked directly at my husband.
I didn't scream.
I didn't cry.
I simply said five words.
"You're about to lose everything.""
His arrogant smile remained for another second.
Then I turned and walked out.
Behind me, Vanessa laughed.
"Where are you going, Olivia? You don't have anywhere else to go!""
I didn't answer.
May you like
Because for the first time in eleven years, I knew exactly where I was going.
And I knew Daniel had no idea what was waiting for him.
