Chapter 3: The Signature That Wasn't Mine

By the time we returned to the Grand Meridian, the ballroom had changed.

The champagne table had been removed. The broken glass was gone. A fresh arrangement of white roses stood where I'd fallen.

It was as if someone had tried to erase what happened.

But they hadn't erased the memory.

I could see it in the faces of the guests as the doors opened.

Conversations stopped.

A waiter froze beside a table.

One woman near the entrance whispered something to her husband.

Then someone recognized me.

"That's Mrs. Bennett.""

Daniel was onstage, holding a microphone.

Vanessa stood beside him, her hand resting possessively on his arm.

He was halfway through a speech about leadership.

"At Bennett Global, we believe success comes from loyalty, integrity, and the people who stand beside us when times are difficult.""

I almost laughed.

Vanessa spotted me first.

Her smile disappeared.

She leaned toward Daniel and whispered something.

He turned.

For a second, he looked genuinely confused.

Then his expression hardened.

"Olivia?""

I continued walking.

James was on my right. Michael Harris, the company's senior board representative, walked on my left. Two other directors followed us.

Daniel lowered his microphone.

"What the hell are you doing here?""

I stopped several feet from the stage.

"Keeping my promise.""

He glanced at James.

"Why is my attorney here?""

James corrected him calmly.

"I'm Mrs. Bennett's attorney, Mr. Bennett.""

Daniel gave a short, humorless laugh.

"Whatever. This is a private company event. Olivia, you need to leave.""

Vanessa stepped forward.

"Security!""

Two security officers approached.

"Please escort her out.""

James raised one hand.

"Before anyone touches Mrs. Bennett, I suggest you listen carefully.""

Daniel rolled his eyes.

"James, this is ridiculous. Whatever Olivia has told you, it's a personal matter.""

"It ceased being personal when company funds were transferred into an account controlled by your mistress.""

A murmur spread through the ballroom.

Vanessa's face went pale.

Daniel grabbed the microphone.

"That's a serious accusation.""

"Indeed," James replied.

"Which is why we're here.""

Michael walked toward the stage.

"Daniel, the board has received an emergency shareholder request. We need to address several transactions and ownership matters immediately.""

Daniel stared at him.

"Who authorized that?""

James opened his folder.

"The controlling shareholder.""

Daniel laughed.

"That's impossible. I'm the founder of this company.""

I finally spoke.

"Being the founder doesn't make you the owner of everything.""

He looked at me as if I had spoken another language.

James placed a document on the small table beside the stage.

"Mr. Bennett, the family trust established by the late Robert Bennett still holds fifty-eight percent of the voting shares.""

The ballroom went silent.

Daniel blinked.

"No.""

James turned toward me.

"Mrs. Bennett is the sole beneficiary and controlling representative of that trust.""

Vanessa grabbed Daniel's arm.

"You told me she owned nothing.""

He ignored her.

"Olivia, that's not how this works. My father-in-law gave those shares to me.""

"My father gave them to the trust," I replied.

"You were allowed to manage the company. You were never given ownership of my controlling interest.""

Daniel's jaw tightened.

"You're making a terrible mistake.""

"No, Daniel. I made one eleven years ago.""

A few people exchanged uncomfortable glances.

Michael requested that the directors gather around the stage.

James continued.

"The board is also reviewing unauthorized transfers to an entity registered under Ms. Reed's name.""

Vanessa stepped backward.

"That's a lie.""

James removed a printed transaction report.

"Would you like to explain the $515,000 in payments?""

Her lips parted.

Daniel snatched the report.

"Those were legitimate marketing expenses.""

"Then the invoices should be easy to produce," James replied.

Daniel looked toward the audience.

"Everyone, please. This is a family disagreement. My wife is upset, and she's trying to turn a private situation into a public spectacle.""

I felt my cheek tighten.

"A family disagreement?""

I stepped closer.

"You hit me in front of two hundred people because I refused to apologize to the woman wearing my mother's necklace.""

Daniel lowered his voice.

"Don't do this.""

"You already did.""

Vanessa suddenly began crying.

"Daniel, tell them. Tell them I didn't know she would behave like this.""

I turned toward her.

"You knew exactly what you were doing when you put on that necklace.""

She crossed her arms.

"Daniel gave it to me.""

"Daniel stole it from me.""

"That's enough!"" Daniel shouted.

James placed another document on the table.

"There's one more issue.""

Daniel looked exhausted now.

"What?""

"The company received a share-transfer agreement yesterday, supposedly signed by Mrs. Bennett.""

He handed me the document.

I recognized it immediately.

My name.

My address.

My signature.

Except I hadn't signed it.

"That's a forgery," I said.

James nodded.

"Preliminary examination suggests the signature was reproduced from an older corporate document.""

He turned to the witness section.

"And the person who witnessed this transaction was Vanessa Reed.""

Vanessa shook her head.

"I didn't forge anything.""

"Then perhaps you can explain why you witnessed a document supposedly signed by Olivia when she was out of state that day.""

Daniel turned toward her.

"What is he talking about?""

Vanessa looked at him.

"Daniel, you told me everything was arranged.""

A dangerous silence settled between them.

James continued.

"The attempted transfer was made to a private holding company. We've requested its ownership records.""

I stared at the final page.

The buyer's name was concealed behind a corporate registration.

But there was an address.

I recognized it.

My younger brother's business address.

Nathan Bennett.

My brother.

The same brother who hadn't spoken to me properly in nearly two years.

The same brother who had once begged Daniel for a job after losing his own business.

I looked at James.

"Why is Nathan's address here?""

James took the paper from me.

"I was hoping you could answer that.""

Daniel suddenly stepped toward the microphone.

"Olivia, listen to me. We need to discuss this privately.""

I didn't move.

"Why is my brother's company involved?""

He glanced at Vanessa.

It was quick.

Almost invisible.

But I saw it.

And so did James.

Then my phone vibrated again.

This time, the message came from Nathan himself.

*Olivia, don't believe anything Daniel tells you. I didn't know what they were planning until yesterday.*

A second message appeared.

*But there's something you need to know about Dad's original trust agreement.*

Before I could reply, the ballroom doors opened.

A man in a charcoal suit entered, carrying a leather briefcase.

He looked directly at me.

Then at Daniel.

"Mrs. Bennett," he called, "I'm here because your brother asked me to deliver the original agreement.""

James went completely still.

"Who are you?""

The man placed the briefcase on the nearest table.

"My name is Richard Cole. I represent the original trustees.""

He unlocked the case and removed a yellowed envelope bearing my father's handwriting.

Then he looked at me.

"There's been a mistake in the ownership records for eleven years.""

My heart began pounding.

"What kind of mistake?""

Richard opened the envelope.

"Your father didn't leave you fifty-eight percent of this company, Mrs. Bennett.""

He turned the document toward me.

"He left you something much more important.""

And when I read the next line, I understood why Daniel had been so desperate to get rid of me.

Because the document didn't just name me as the controlling shareholder.

May you like

It named me as the person with the power to decide who would inherit the entire company.

And Daniel's name wasn't anywhere on it.
