Chapter 7: The Daughter Nobody Told Me About

I read the name again.

Then again.

My eyes moved across the paper, but my brain refused to accept what I was seeing.

*Evelyn’s daughter.*

I looked at Daniel.

“You told me your mother only had one child.””

He didn’t answer.

That silence was louder than anything he could have said.

“Daniel.””

He rubbed his face.

“Sarah, it’s complicated.””

I laughed.

A quiet, bitter laugh.

“Everything with you is complicated when you’re caught.””

He flinched.

“That’s not fair.””

“Fair?””

I held up the document.

“Your mother tried to take control of my bank account. My inheritance disappeared. You hid financial transfers from me. And now I find out you have a sister you never mentioned.””

Daniel looked toward the window.

“She wasn’t supposed to be part of our lives.””

“Why?””

He didn’t speak.

I stepped closer.

“Why, Daniel?””

Finally, he sat down.

His shoulders looked heavier than they had the night before.

“Her name is Rachel.””

I waited.

He continued.

“She’s my half-sister.””

I stared at him.

“Half-sister?””

“My father had another relationship before he died.””

I crossed my arms.

“And your mother knew?””

“Yes.””

“How long?””

“Her whole life.””

I shook my head slowly.

“And you just forgot to mention this?””

“It wasn’t something we talked about.””

I looked around the house.

The house I had bought.

The house where Daniel had told me he had no secrets.

“You married me.””

“Yes.””

“You asked me to trust you.””

“Yes.””

“Then you hid an entire person from me.””

His eyes lowered.

“Rachel wasn’t the problem.””

“Then what was?””

He didn’t answer immediately.

That scared me.

Because I knew there was more.

“There was a lawsuit,” he finally said.

I froze.

“What lawsuit?””

Daniel looked miserable.

“Years ago, Rachel accused my father’s company of hiding money from her mother.””

“And?””

“My father settled.””

I frowned.

“Why does that matter?””

“Because your father was involved.””

My stomach tightened.

“My father?””

Daniel nodded.

“He helped investigate the company.””

Everything suddenly felt connected.

My father.

Evelyn.

The missing money.

The warning letter.

“What did my father find?””

Daniel looked at me.

“He found evidence.””

“Evidence of what?””

Before he could answer, his phone rang.

He looked at the screen.

His face changed.

I noticed.

“Who is it?””

He didn’t respond.

I reached out.

He pulled the phone away.

That movement told me everything.

“Daniel.””

“It’s nothing.””

I stared at him.

“You really still think I believe that?””

The phone stopped ringing.

A second later, a message appeared.

Daniel looked at it.

Then immediately locked the screen.

But not before I saw the first line.

*She knows.*

My blood went cold.

“Who wrote that?””

Daniel stood.

“Sarah, you need to understand something.””

“No.””

I shook my head.

“You need to understand something.””

I pointed at the phone.

“Every time you tell me not to worry, I discover something worse.””

He closed his eyes.

“It’s not just about money anymore.””

That sentence made me pause.

“What does that mean?””

He looked at me.

And for the first time since this began, I saw genuine fear.

“Rachel disappeared.””

I stared at him.

“What?””

“She disappeared three years ago.””

“Three years?””

The same year my father died.

The same year Daniel started asking questions about my inheritance.

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

“Because my mother told me not to.””

I stepped back.

There it was again.

His mother.

Always his mother.

“Daniel.””

I lowered my voice.

“Did Evelyn have something to do with Rachel disappearing?””

He looked away.

And that was the answer.

I grabbed my coat.

“Where are you going?””

“To find the truth.””

“Sarah, don’t.””

I turned around.

“You hit me because I wouldn’t give you a bank card.””

My voice shook.

“You lied because you thought I wouldn’t notice.””

I opened the door.

“But you made one mistake.””

Daniel looked at me.

“What?””

I held up my father’s letter.

“You forgot my father taught me how to find what people try to hide.””

As I stepped outside, my phone buzzed.

Unknown number.

I answered.

“Hello?””

A woman’s trembling voice whispered:

“Sarah?””

I froze.

“Who is this?””

A long silence.

May you like

Then:

“My name is Rachel.””
