Chapter 4: The Inheritance They Buried

For a moment, I forgot how to breathe.

The words didn’t make sense.

Not because I didn’t understand them.

Because I understood them too well.

“My father’s money?””

Daniel looked away.

I felt my grip tighten around my keys.

“What do you mean it’s gone?””

Evelyn immediately stepped forward.

“Daniel, stop talking.””

I turned toward her.

“No.””

My voice was sharper than I expected.

“You don’t get to tell him to stop.””

She stared at me.

“You’re upset.””

“I was upset when your son slapped me.””

The room went silent.

Daniel lowered his eyes.

Good.

He should have.

I walked closer.

“Now I want answers.””

Daniel rubbed his hands over his face.

“Sarah…”

“No.””

I shook my head.

“You don’t get to say my name like that anymore. Not until you explain why my inheritance is missing.””

He swallowed.

“It wasn’t stolen.””

“Then where is it?””

Silence.

That was all the answer I needed.

My father had passed away three years earlier.

He wasn’t a wealthy man, but he had worked his entire life building a small manufacturing company. When he died, he left me a trust fund and a portion of the company shares.

He always told me one thing.

“Money doesn’t make a family. But money reveals one.””

At the time, I thought it was just something old people said.

Now I wondered if he had known something I didn’t.

“How much?”” I asked.

Daniel looked confused.

“What?””

“How much money did you take?””

His face changed.

“I didn’t take it.””

“Then how did it disappear?””

Evelyn sighed dramatically.

“This is why I warned Daniel about marrying someone who keeps score.””

I turned toward her.

“Keeping score?””

I laughed quietly.

“You know what’s interesting? I spent years trying to prove I was part of this family.””

I pointed at the dining table.

“I paid bills.””

I pointed toward the hallway.

“I fixed problems.””

I pointed at Daniel.

“I saved him when everyone else walked away.””

Then I looked back at Evelyn.

“And now I’m asking where my own money went.””

She said nothing.

Daniel finally spoke.

“Your inheritance was moved.””

“By who?””

He hesitated.

“Me.””

The word hit harder than the slap.

I stared at him.

“You moved my inheritance?””

“I was trying to protect us.””

“Protect us?””

I stepped back.

“You moved money that belonged to me without telling me.””

“It was temporary.””

“Temporary?””

I almost laughed.

“Daniel, people don’t secretly move hundreds of thousands of dollars and call it temporary.””

His shoulders dropped.

“How did you know about the amount?””

I looked at him.

“Because I know my father.””

That made him quiet.

My father had always been careful.

The trust had rules.

The money could not simply disappear.

Unless someone had convinced the bank there was a reason.

Unless someone had access.

I looked at the documents again.

The fake loan agreement.

The attempted account change.

The missing inheritance.

The pieces started connecting.

“Evelyn.””

Her face hardened.

“What?””

“Why did you ask for my debit card tonight?””

Nobody answered.

I nodded slowly.

“Because you knew I would find out.””

Daniel looked alarmed.

“Sarah.””

“No.””

I held up my hand.

“This was never about paying bills.””

My eyes moved between them.

“You needed my card because you needed access before I discovered what you had already done.””

Evelyn’s expression finally cracked.

Just for a moment.

But it was enough.

She was nervous.

Daniel saw it too.

“Mom?””

Evelyn looked at him.

“You need to calm her down.””

I almost smiled.

There it was.

Not an apology.

Not an explanation.

A command.

She still thought she was in control.

I picked up my phone.

“I’m calling my attorney.””

Daniel immediately stepped forward.

“Sarah, don’t.””

I looked at him.

“Why?””

“Because this will destroy everything.””

I stared at him.

“You destroyed everything when you chose her over me.””

His face went pale.

Then Evelyn said something that made me stop.

“You don’t understand what your father left behind.””

I turned.

“What does that mean?””

She walked toward the table and placed her hand on the document.

“You think your inheritance was just money?””

I frowned.

“What else would it be?””

She looked directly into my eyes.

“Your father left something that could ruin Daniel’s entire family.””

My stomach tightened.

“What?””

She smiled.

Not kindly.

May you like

Like someone who finally had a weapon.

“Ask your father’s lawyer why he never told you the whole truth.””
