Chapter 5: The Secret My Father Left Behind
I didn’t sleep that night.
I sat in my car outside a twenty-four-hour coffee shop, staring at my phone.
I had called nobody.
Not my friends.
Not my family.
Not even my lawyer.
Because a part of me was still waiting for Daniel to call.
To explain.
To apologize.
To tell me there was some impossible misunderstanding.
But my phone stayed silent.
At 7:15 in the morning, I called my father’s estate attorney.
His name was Michael Grant.
He answered on the third ring.
“Sarah? Is everything okay?””
I closed my eyes.
“No.””
There was a pause.
A long one.
“What happened?””
I looked through the windshield at the empty parking lot.
“Did my father leave me something besides the trust?””
The silence that followed made my hands go cold.
“Sarah…”
“Michael.””
My voice shook.
“I need you to answer honestly.””
Another pause.
Then he said:
“Where did you hear that?””
I swallowed.
“So there is something.””
He sighed.
“Sarah, your father specifically asked me not to discuss certain matters unless you came to me first.””
I gripped the phone.
“Why?””
“Because he was worried.””
“About what?””
The line went quiet.
Then:
“About the people around you.””
My heart sank.
I looked down.
“Did he mean Daniel?””
Michael didn’t answer immediately.
That was answer enough.
“I need to see you today,” he said.
Two hours later, I sat across from Michael in his office.
The same office where my father had signed his final papers.
The walls were covered with old photographs.
My father shaking hands.
My father smiling.
My father standing beside the small company he built.
Michael placed a folder on the desk.
“Your father was very specific.””
I looked at the folder.
“What is it?””
“Additional estate instructions.””
I opened it.
Inside was a letter.
My father’s handwriting.
My hands started shaking.
I hadn’t seen his writing since the funeral.
Sarah,
If you are reading this, it means something happened that made you question who you can trust.
I stopped reading.
My eyes blurred.
Michael quietly looked away.
I continued.
I always believed you would choose love over money. That is why I never wanted this information to control your life.
But I also knew there were people who would confuse your kindness with weakness.
I swallowed hard.
“Michael…”
He nodded.
The letter continued.
The trust fund is protected. However, I placed restrictions on access because I was concerned about outside influence.
Outside influence.
Those words felt heavy.
I looked up.
“Who did he mean?””
Michael folded his hands.
“Your father met with me six months before he passed.””
“And?””
“He asked me to investigate financial activity connected to Daniel.””
My heart dropped.
“Daniel?””
“Yes.””
I stared at him.
“What did he find?””
Michael opened another file.
“Your father discovered several unusual transfers.””
I felt sick.
“From where?””
“Your accounts.””
The room became silent.
I looked at the papers.
“How?””
Michael pushed them toward me.
“Because Daniel had convinced you to sign financial authorization forms when you thought they were related to your house.””
I remembered.
Two years ago.
Daniel had told me it was normal paperwork.
Insurance.
Mortgage protection.
I had signed without reading every page.
Because I trusted him.
Michael’s voice softened.
“Your father tried to warn you.””
I looked up.
“Why didn’t he?””
“He did.””
I froze.
“What?””
Michael reached into the folder and pulled out an envelope.
My name was written on it.
My father’s handwriting.
“This letter was supposed to be delivered if certain conditions were met.””
My fingers touched the envelope.
“What conditions?””
Michael looked at me.
“The moment someone attempted to gain unauthorized control of your finances.””
My breath stopped.
Because that meant my father had predicted this.
I opened the envelope.
Inside was one sentence.
Just one.

And when I read it, my entire body went cold.
*Sarah, if Daniel’s mother is involved, leave immediately. Do not ask questions. Do not negotiate. Run.*
