Chapter 11: The Truth About My Father’s Death
I left the warehouse without saying another word.
Not because I was done.
Because I couldn’t breathe.
The world outside felt different.
The street.
The sky.
The sound of passing cars.
Everything looked normal.
But my entire life had changed in one night.
My father’s death.
My marriage.
My inheritance.
Everything I thought I understood had cracks underneath it.
I drove straight to Michael’s office.
The lights were off.
The parking lot was empty.
I called again.
No answer.
I stood outside the locked door, staring at the glass.
Then I noticed something.
A piece of paper taped inside.
A handwritten message.
*Sarah, if you found this, I’m sorry.*
My heart stopped.
I pulled out my phone and took a picture.
Then another.
The message continued.
*I made mistakes. Your father trusted me, and I failed him.*
I stepped back.
Failed him.
Not betrayed him.
Failed him.
There was a difference.
I drove to the address listed on Michael’s business card.
His home.
When I arrived, his car was there.
The front door was slightly open.
“Michael?””
No answer.
I pushed the door.
“Michael?””
The house was quiet.
Too quiet.
I walked inside.
“Michael, it’s Sarah.””
Then I heard something.
A cough.
From the study.
I rushed in.
Michael was sitting on the floor beside his desk.
His shirt was torn.
A cut marked his forehead.
“Oh my God.””
I ran toward him.
“Who did this?””
He looked up.
And when he saw me, his expression changed.
“You shouldn’t be here.””
I helped him sit up.
“Who attacked you?””
He looked toward the door.
Then whispered:
“Evelyn.””
My hands froze.
“She came here?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
Michael closed his eyes.
“Because she knew I kept the original documents.””
“What original documents?””
He looked at me.
“The ones proving your father never transferred the company.””
I felt dizzy.
“But I saw the papers.””
“Fake.””
The word landed like a stone.
I stared at him.
“Then why did Evelyn show me them?””
“To make you distrust me.””
I thought about it.
The timing.
The document.
The accusation.
It all suddenly made sense.
“She wanted me to think everyone betrayed me.””
Michael nodded.
“That’s what she does.””
I helped him toward the chair.
“Tell me everything.””
He looked exhausted.
“Your father discovered Evelyn’s family had been hiding money for years.””
“And Daniel?””
“Daniel was involved, but not the way you think.””
I frowned.
“What do you mean?””
Michael looked at me.
“He was young. Easily influenced.””
“That doesn’t excuse him.””
“No.””
Michael sighed.
“But your father believed Daniel could change.””
I looked away.
“Apparently he was wrong.””
Michael was silent.
Then he reached into a drawer.
He pulled out a small envelope.
“My father’s handwriting?””
I recognized it immediately.
“Your father gave this to me three days before he died.””
“Why didn’t you give it to me?””
His eyes filled with regret.
“Because I was afraid.””
“Of Evelyn?””
“Yes.””
I opened the envelope.
Inside was a single page.
My father’s words.
Sarah,
If you are reading this, it means I failed to protect you.
My hands trembled.
I continued.
Do not trust anyone who tells you they are doing this for family. The people who use that word the most are often the ones who understand it the least.
I swallowed.
Then I reached the final line.
And my heart stopped.
*Daniel knows the truth about my death.*
I looked up.
“Michael…”
He looked away.
“I’m sorry.””
I stared at the paper.
“No.””
My voice was barely a whisper.
“No, that can’t be true.””
But deep down, I already knew.
Because Daniel had been afraid all along.
May you like
Not because of his mother.
Because of what he had done.
