Chapter 14: The Truth Daniel Hid
I couldn’t speak.
The man I married stood in front of me.
The man who slept beside me.
The man who held my hand at my father’s funeral.
And he had been inside my father’s house the night he died.
“No.””
Daniel stepped forward.
“Sarah, listen.””
I moved back.
“Don’t.””
My voice shook.
“Do not come closer.””
He stopped.
“I didn’t kill him.””
The words hit me strangely.
Because I hadn’t accused him.
Not yet.
But he already knew what I was thinking.
“You were there.””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
He looked down.
“Because my mother told me to go.””
Evelyn rolled her eyes.
“He’s making himself a victim.””
Daniel turned toward her.
“You made me one.””
Her expression changed.
“Careful.””
“No.””
His voice grew stronger.
“You spent my entire life making me afraid of you.””
Richard watched silently.
Almost enjoying it.
I looked at him.
“Why are you here?””
He answered calmly.
“Because this family is falling apart.””
I shook my head.
“No.””
I pointed at him.
“Because you’re afraid.””
For the first time, his expression changed.
Only slightly.
But enough.
I saw it.
Fear.
I turned back to Daniel.
“What happened that night?””
He swallowed.
“My mother wanted your father to sign documents.””
“What documents?””
“Ownership transfers.””
My stomach tightened.
“Like the fake ones?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
“Because your father was going to expose everything.””
I looked at Evelyn.
“And my father refused.””
Daniel nodded.
“He refused.””
“What happened next?””
His hands shook.
“My mother and your father argued.””
“About what?””
“About you.””
I froze.
“Me?””
Daniel nodded.
“She knew you were the heir.””
The words hurt.
Because suddenly my entire marriage felt like a transaction.
“She planned everything.””
His voice cracked.
“She wanted me to marry you.””
I looked away.
“I know.””
“No.””
He stepped closer.
“She didn’t just want your money.””
I looked at him.
“What else?””
“She wanted access to your father’s company.””
I frowned.
“But my father never gave it to her.””
Daniel shook his head.
“Because he knew.””
“Knew what?””
“That she was using me.””
Silence.
Then I remembered.
My father’s letter.
Do not trust anyone who tells you they are doing this for family.
Daniel continued.
“My father confronted my mother.””
“And?””
“He told her he had proof.””
Richard finally spoke.
“And that proof was the recording.””
I looked at him.
“You knew.””
“Yes.””
“You helped hide it.””
He didn’t deny it.
My anger burned.
“You all stood around while my father died.””
Daniel closed his eyes.
“I tried to help him.””
I stared.
“What?””
“My father told me to leave.””
“Why?””
“Because he knew my mother would destroy me too.””
A tear fell down Daniel’s face.
“He gave me the flash drive.””
My heart stopped.
“Then why didn’t you give it to me?””
His answer was barely a whisper.
“Because I was a coward.””
Nobody spoke.
Then Evelyn laughed.
A cold, empty laugh.
“Look at you all.””
She shook her head.
“Everyone pretending they are innocent.””
I looked at her.
“You’re not denying anything.””
She smiled.
“No.””
That surprised me.
“I’m tired of pretending.””
Daniel looked horrified.
“Mom.””
She ignored him.
“Your father thought he could beat me because he had evidence.””
She stepped closer.
“But he made one mistake.””
I stared.
“What?””
“He underestimated how much people will do when they have something to lose.””
My blood went cold.
“You’re admitting it?””
Richard stepped forward.
“Evelyn.””
She looked at him.
“What?””
“Stop.””
For the first time, Richard sounded afraid.
And that told me something.
Even he was afraid of her.
Evelyn smiled.
Then she looked at me.
“You want the recording?””
I didn’t answer.
She reached into her bag.
Pulled out a small device.
And placed it on the hood of the SUV.
“Listen.””
I stared at it.
“What is this?””
“The original.””
Daniel looked shocked.
“Mom, you had it?””
She smiled.
“Yes.””
My hands trembled as I picked it up.
I pressed play.
At first, there was only static.
Then my father’s voice.
Weak.
Tired.
But unmistakable.
May you like
And the first sentence I heard destroyed everything I believed.
“Evelyn, if you are hearing this, then you already know I discovered what you did.””
