Chapter 8: The Woman Behind The Mask
The first interview request arrived at 8:00 a.m.
By 8:15, there were twelve more.
Every major business network wanted Adrian's side of the story.
They wanted the dramatic downfall.
The billionaire husband.
The powerful wife.
The betrayal.
The scandal.
They didn't want truth.
They wanted entertainment.
Adrian sat across from me in my office, staring at the headlines.
"They're making me look like a victim.""
I looked at him.
"Aren't you?""
He looked surprised.
"After everything?""
"No.""
I closed the folder in front of me.
"You are a victim of your own choices.""
He looked down.
That answer hurt him.
But he didn't fight it.
Maybe because he finally understood I wasn't trying to punish him.
I was refusing to protect him from reality.
Margaret entered with another file.
"Victoria's interview is scheduled for tonight.""
Adrian immediately looked up.
"She's going public?""
"Yes.""
"What is she saying?""
Margaret hesitated.
"That you were manipulated.""
Adrian laughed quietly.
"By Elena?""
Margaret shook her head.
"No.""
She placed the file down.
"By your own success.""
The interview aired that evening.
We watched from the conference room.
Victoria appeared wearing a simple outfit.
No luxury jewelry.
No designer clothes.
She looked sympathetic.
Careful.
"I never wanted attention," she told the interviewer.
Adrian scoffed.
"That's a lie.""
I watched silently.
Because I recognized what she was doing.
She was creating a character.
The innocent woman.
The loyal partner.
The person who supposedly cared.
"My concern was always Adrian's wellbeing," Victoria continued.
Adrian stood up.
"Turn it off.""
But I kept watching.
Because then she said something unexpected.
"I believe Adrian was surrounded by people who controlled him.""
My eyes narrowed.
People.
Plural.
She wasn't talking about me.
She was building a larger accusation.
Margaret quickly checked something on her laptop.
"Wait.""
"What?""
"She filed a legal claim.""
Adrian froze.
"What claim?""
Margaret looked at him.
"She is accusing the holding company of misleading Adrian about ownership structure.""
I stared.
"She knows that's impossible.""
"Yes.""
"Then why do it?""
Margaret answered quietly.
"Because she doesn't need to win.""
I understood immediately.
She needed chaos.
Doubt.
Fear.
Enough uncertainty that investors would hesitate.
Enough confusion that people would question everything.
Victoria didn't need the truth.
She needed a battlefield.
Adrian sat down slowly.
"This is my fault.""
I looked at him.
"Yes.""
He nodded.
"I brought her into our lives.""
He looked at the screen.
"I trusted her because she made me feel important.""
A long silence followed.
Then he said something I never expected.
"She reminded me of who I wanted to be.""
I studied his face.
"And who did she make you forget?""
He looked at me.
"You.""
The answer was quiet.
Honest.
But honesty came too late.
The next morning, my father's old attorney contacted me.
He requested an emergency meeting.
When I arrived, he placed a sealed envelope on the table.
"Your father left this instruction years ago.""
I frowned.
"Why now?""
"Because the condition has been met.""
My hands froze.
"What condition?""
He looked at me.
"The moment someone attempted to take control of the company through deception.""
I opened the envelope.
Inside was a letter.
Only three paragraphs.
But the final sentence made my heart stop.
"Elena, if Adrian ever forgets the person he promised to protect, remind him that he was never chosen because he was powerful.""
I read the sentence again.
Then the next line.
"He was chosen because he had a heart.""
I closed my eyes.
Because my father wasn't telling me to destroy Adrian.
He was reminding me of something more difficult.
The man I loved might still exist.
Buried beneath pride.
Buried beneath ambition.
But before I could decide what to do...
Adrian received a call.
And whatever he heard made him stand immediately.
"Elena.""
I looked at him.
"What happened?""
May you like
His face turned pale.
"Victoria wasn't working alone.""
