Chapter 14: The Man I Almost Lost Forever
I found Adrian alone in the office that night.
Not the executive office.
Not the one with the city view.
The small office where he first worked when the company was just beginning.
The place where he kept old photographs.
He was holding one.
A picture of us.
Before the money.
Before the empire.
Before everything changed.
"You believe him," Adrian said.
I stopped.
"What?""
"Robert.""
I looked at him.
"I don't know what to believe.""
He nodded.
"Fair.""
That answer surprised me.
Because old Adrian would have demanded trust.
New Adrian understood it had to be earned.
"I need to tell you something," he said.
I waited.
"Before the gala.""
My expression changed.
"What about it?""
"Robert came to me.""
The room became quiet.
"What did he say?""
Adrian looked down.
"He told me the company needed a new direction.""
I felt my stomach tighten.
"And?""
"He said I was being controlled.""
I closed my eyes.
"By me.""
He nodded.
"Yes.""
The pain returned.
Not because it was new.
Because it confirmed my fear.
Robert didn't create Adrian's arrogance.
He fed it.
"What else?""
Adrian hesitated.
"He gave me documents.""
"What documents?""
"Ownership restructuring.""
I stared.
"You were going to change the company structure?""
He looked ashamed.
"For a moment.""
A long silence.
"Why?""
He looked at me.
"Because I thought you didn't believe in me anymore.""
The answer hurt.
Because it was so human.
So flawed.
"You never asked me.""
"I know.""
"Why didn't you?""
He swallowed.
"Because I was afraid you would say no.""
I looked away.
After everything.
After the betrayal.
After the humiliation.
The truth was somehow more painful.
He wasn't trying to destroy me.
He was trying to escape feeling small.
And he made the worst choices possible.
"Did you sign anything?""
"No.""
I looked back.
"No?""
He shook his head.
"That night at the gala, before I went on stage, I looked at the documents again.""
"And?""
"I realized something.""
"What?""
He held the photograph.
"I was about to become exactly who my father-in-law warned me about.""
The honesty was different.
There was no excuse.
No defense.
Just regret.
Then Margaret entered.
"We found the missing agreement.""
Both of us turned.
"The original transfer document?""
She nodded.
"And the signature?""
She looked at Adrian.
"Was forged.""
Adrian closed his eyes.
"So Daniel used a fake document.""
"Yes.""
I exhaled.
The final piece.
Robert manipulated Adrian.
Victoria manipulated Adrian.
Daniel attacked Adrian.
But Adrian's choices still mattered.
The next day, the final hearing began.
This time, we entered together.
Not as husband and wife.
Not completely.
But as two people protecting something bigger than ourselves.
Daniel arrived with Victoria.
They looked confident.
Until they saw Adrian standing beside me.
Victoria's expression changed.
"You chose her?""
Adrian looked at her.
"No.""
She smiled.
"Then why are you here?""
He answered:
"Because she was there before anyone wanted something from me.""
Victoria's face hardened.
The hearing lasted hours.
Every piece came out.
The forged documents.
The financial transfers.
The hidden communications.
The false claims.
By the end, Daniel and Victoria had no story left.
Only consequences.
When the judge ruled, the room became silent.
The company remained protected.
The false claims were dismissed.
The evidence was transferred for further investigation.
Outside the courthouse, reporters surrounded us.
Questions everywhere.
"Elena, are you staying with Adrian?""
"Adrian, do you regret what happened?""
We walked past them.
Because some answers didn't belong to strangers.
That night, Adrian stood outside our house.
Not entering.
Waiting.
"You don't have to forgive me," he said.
I looked at him.
"I know.""
"But I hope someday...""
He stopped.
I waited.
"Someday you remember who I was before all this.""
I looked at him.
"Adrian.""
He looked up.
"That is the problem.""
His face fell slightly.
"Because I remember.""
A pause.
"And I remember who you became.""
The silence was heavy.
But not hopeless.
Because for the first time in a long time, the truth was standing between us.
Not lies.
Not pride.
Not appearances.
May you like
Just truth.
And sometimes, rebuilding starts there.
