Chapter 3: The Name Above His

Adrian stared at the documents for nearly five minutes without saying a word.

That was unusual.

My husband always had something to say.

An excuse.

A speech.

A way to turn every situation into a story where he was the hero.

But that morning, he was silent.

I stood across from him in the office.

The same office where he had filmed interviews about his "personal journey.""

The same room where he had told reporters that nobody helped him.

His fingers moved across the pages.

"No.""

It was barely a whisper.

Then louder.

"No. This isn't possible.""

Margaret stood beside me, calm and professional.

"Mr. Vale, all documents have been verified by independent legal teams.""

Adrian looked at her.

"You work for her.""

Margaret didn't blink.

"I work for the company that legally owns these assets.""

His face changed.

Not anger.

Fear.

"You knew?""

I looked at him.

"Knew what?""

He pointed at the papers.

"That I was nothing without this?""

The words surprised me.

Because for once, Adrian wasn't pretending.

For once, he was saying what he truly believed.

I shook my head.

"No, Adrian. I knew you were capable of something great.""

"Then why?""

"Why what?""

"Why let me believe it was mine?""

I looked around the room.

At all the years we had spent together.

At all the moments I thought we were partners.

"Because I loved you.""

His expression softened for a moment.

A tiny glimpse of the man I married appeared.

Then it disappeared.

"You expect me to feel sorry?""

I froze.

"What?""

He stood up.

"You let me build this entire thing while secretly holding power over me.""

His voice grew louder.

"You were testing me.""

"No.""

"You wanted control.""

"No, Adrian.""

I stepped closer.

"I wanted a husband.""

The room became quiet.

For a moment, neither of us spoke.

Then his phone rang.

He looked down.

The color drained from his face.

It was one of his senior executives.

He answered.

"What?""

A pause.

His eyes moved toward me.

"What do you mean the board meeting is today?""

Another pause.

His grip tightened.

"Who called the meeting?""

He slowly lowered the phone.

I already knew the answer.

"The board members," he whispered.

Margaret picked up her folder.

"Your former board members.""

Adrian stared at me.

"You planned this.""

"No.""

I walked toward the window.

"I prepared for the possibility that the man I loved would forget the woman standing beside him.""

He shook his head.

"This isn't over.""

I turned around.

"No. You're right.""

A small smile crossed my face.

"It isn't.""

Because Adrian still didn't know everything.

He didn't know why my father had personally approved his first investment.

He didn't know why the holding company had protected him for so long.

And he definitely didn't know the truth about the shares he thought he had earned.

The truth that would prove his entire empire had been built on a promise he broke years ago.

That afternoon, as Adrian entered the emergency board meeting hoping to save his company, the chairman placed one final envelope in front of him.

On the front was a name.

May you like

A name Adrian had not seen in over a decade.

And when he read it, his entire expression changed.
