Chapter 10: The Battle For The Legacy

The first thing I felt was not fear.

It was disappointment.

Because after everything Adrian had done, after everything Victoria had planned, I thought I had already seen the worst.

I was wrong.

The person threatening my family's legacy wasn't a stranger.

It was someone my father once sat across from.

Someone he gave a chance to.

Daniel Cross had spent years waiting.

And now he believed the perfect moment had arrived.

"He can't claim those shares," Adrian said.

Margaret looked at him.

"Legally, he can try.""

Adrian stood.

"But he doesn't own them.""

"No," Margaret replied.

"But he's creating uncertainty.""

That was Daniel's strategy.

Not winning immediately.

Creating enough confusion that everyone started questioning what was real.

The next morning, financial news channels began reporting the dispute.

They didn't know the details.

They didn't know the history.

They only knew one thing.

The company behind one of America's largest corporations was facing an internal ownership battle.

And that was enough.

Investors panicked.

Employees worried.

The same people who once celebrated Adrian now questioned whether the entire empire was unstable.

I watched the headlines from my office.

Years ago, Adrian would have blamed everyone else.

The media.

The investors.

The board.

But now he sat quietly.

Reading every article.

Taking every criticism.

"This is what I did," he said.

I looked up.

"What?""

He placed the tablet down.

"I created the environment where people like Daniel could enter.""

I didn't respond.

Because he was right.

Not completely.

But enough.

Adrian had pushed away anyone who challenged him.

He surrounded himself with people who praised him.

And when someone finally told him exactly what he wanted to hear, he trusted them.

Margaret entered.

"We have the emergency hearing scheduled for tomorrow.""

I nodded.

"Who represents Daniel?""

She placed a file on the desk.

"One of the most aggressive corporate law firms in the country.""

Adrian looked at the name.

"How did he afford them?""

Nobody answered.

Because we already knew.

Victoria.

The pieces connected.

Daniel had the strategy.

Victoria had access.

And Adrian had unknowingly opened the door.

That night, I returned to my father's office.

I needed answers.

Not from documents.

From memories.

I opened old boxes.

Letters.

Photographs.

Years of history.

Then I found something unexpected.

A picture of my father and Daniel.

They were standing outside the first company building.

Both smiling.

Both younger.

On the back, my father had written a note.

"Two people can start with the same dream and end up choosing completely different paths.""

I sat down.

Because my father knew.

He knew Daniel was ambitious.

He knew Adrian was vulnerable.

But he still believed people could choose better.

The next morning, the hearing began.

Daniel entered the room confidently.

Older than I remembered.

But carrying the same arrogance.

He looked at me.

"Elena.""

I didn't answer.

He smiled.

"You look just like your father.""

"And you look exactly like the person he warned me about.""

His smile disappeared.

Adrian looked at me.

Surprised.

Because he had never seen me speak to Daniel like that.

The judge called the room to order.

Daniel's attorney presented his argument.

They claimed my father unfairly restricted ownership.

They claimed Adrian was misled.

They claimed the holding company had manipulated business agreements.

Then Daniel stood.

"I spent years watching my contributions ignored.""

He looked toward Adrian.

"I watched someone else receive everything.""

Adrian remained silent.

Daniel continued.

"Adrian Vale became successful because people believed in him. But what happens when the person who gave him everything decides she owns him?""

The room shifted.

Because that was the story Daniel wanted.

Control.

Manipulation.

Power.

Then Adrian stood.

Everyone looked surprised.

Including me.

"I need to say something.""

The judge allowed it.

Adrian faced the room.

"Years ago, I thought accepting help made me weak.""

He paused.

"I was wrong.""

Daniel's expression changed slightly.

Adrian continued.

"I was given an opportunity. I was trusted. And instead of honoring that trust, I convinced myself I created everything alone.""

The room was silent.

"I don't know what Daniel Cross wants people to believe.""

He looked at me.

"But I know this.""

His voice became stronger.

"The person standing beside me today is the reason I had something worth losing.""

I looked away.

Because I wasn't ready for those words.

Then Daniel's attorney smiled.

Not worried.

Almost confident.

And that scared me.

Because people only smiled like that when they had another card to play.

After the hearing ended, Daniel walked past us.

He stopped beside Adrian.

"You still don't understand.""

Adrian looked at him.

"Understand what?""

Daniel whispered:

"Your wife isn't the only person with secrets.""

Then he walked away.

And Adrian looked at me.

May you like

Because suddenly, we both wondered the same thing.

What secret was Daniel talking about?
