Chapter 4: The Signature That Wasn't Mine
"Please don't tell Sophie.""
Those five words came out of Daniel's mouth as though our daughter was the only person he still cared about protecting.
I stared at the forged signature on the property transfer agreement.
My name was printed clearly beneath it.
OLIVIA MARIE BENNETT.
The document transferred ownership of my company's headquarters and several business assets into a newly registered holding company.
The effective date was eight months earlier.
I looked at Daniel.
"Did you forge my signature?""
He rubbed his forehead.
"Olivia, I can explain.""
"That's not an answer.""
"Things were complicated financially. I was trying to protect our family.""
"By stealing my company?""
His jaw tightened.
"Watch your words.""
Evelyn stood between us.
"Daniel, stop lying. I found the original documents in your study. You even had Olivia's signature copied onto the bank authorization forms.""
Daniel turned toward his mother.
"You had no right to go through my things!""
"I had every right when I discovered you were transferring money from your wife's company into Vanessa's accounts.""
Vanessa shifted uncomfortably beside the window.
"Can we please stop acting like I'm the villain here?""
I turned toward her.
"You're wearing a diamond bracelet purchased with money stolen from my company. What would you call yourself?""
She glanced at Daniel.
"He told me the company was his.""
"And you believed him?""
"Yes!""
"Without asking why his wife was still running it?""
Vanessa's cheeks flushed.
Daniel stepped forward.
"Enough. You're making accusations without understanding the situation.""
I picked up the document.
"Then help me understand this. Why did you transfer ownership of my building without my consent?""
He lowered his voice.
"I needed collateral.""
"For what?""
He hesitated.
Evelyn answered.
"His debts.""
Daniel glared at her.
"Mother, stay out of this.""
But she continued.
"Michael and Daniel borrowed money from private investors before the accident. After Michael disappeared, Daniel inherited the responsibility for everything. He kept borrowing to cover the original debts.""
I looked at the bank statements.
"How much?""
Evelyn closed her eyes.
"More than two million dollars.""
My stomach dropped.
Daniel finally spoke.
"I was going to fix it.""
"With my company?""
"I had a plan.""
"You had a mistress, an engagement party, and a fake property transfer. That's your plan?""
Vanessa suddenly began crying.
"Daniel, you told me everything was already handled!""
He grabbed her arm.
"Not now.""
She pulled away.
"You said Olivia would sign the divorce papers and leave with nothing. You said the house was already ours!""
I looked at him.
"The house?""
Daniel went silent.
I felt my knees weaken.
Our home outside Atlanta wasn't just a house to me.
It was where Sophie had taken her first steps.
Where I had painted her bedroom yellow because she loved sunshine.
Where Daniel had held me after my father died.
I had believed it was the one place in the world where our daughter would always feel safe.
"Did you transfer the house too?""
Daniel looked at the floor.
Evelyn handed me another sheet.
It was a property filing showing an attempted transfer of our family home into a company registered under Daniel's control.
The transfer had not been completed.
But it had been submitted.
Without my knowledge.
I looked at the date.
Eight months ago.
The same day as the forged business agreement.
My phone vibrated.
A message from my office manager, Rachel.
Olivia, I'm sorry to bother you tonight. There's a man here asking the security team to give him access to the company records. He says Daniel authorized it.
I immediately called her.
"Rachel, don't let anyone inside.""
"He's showing documents with your signature.""
"Those documents are fraudulent.""
There was a pause.
"Are you sure?""
"Absolutely. Call our attorney and preserve the security footage. Nobody touches the computers or files.""
Daniel was listening.
His face changed.
"Who are you talking to?""
"Rachel.""
"Tell her to stop interfering.""
I ended the call.
"You're finished, Daniel.""
He laughed bitterly.
"You think you can destroy me? Half the people in Atlanta know my name.""
I looked directly into his eyes.
"I don't need to destroy you. I just need to stop protecting you.""
Then Evelyn's phone rang.
She glanced at the screen.
Her expression changed.
"What's wrong?"" I asked.
She answered.
"Hello?""
A man's voice spoke loudly enough for us to hear.
"Mrs. Bennett, this is Detective Harris. We need to speak with you about Michael Bennett.""
Evelyn gripped the table.
"Is he all right?""
"He's alive, ma'am. But we've discovered something concerning his disappearance.""
Daniel suddenly grabbed his mother's phone.
"She doesn't know anything!""
The detective's voice became firm.
"Mr. Bennett, are you there?""
Daniel froze.
Then the detective said something that made him slowly lower the phone.
"Daniel, we have a warrant for your financial records. And we'd like to know why a man officially declared dead has recently been making payments to accounts connected to you.""
Vanessa covered her mouth.
I looked at my husband.
He wasn't just afraid anymore.
He was trapped.
May you like
And then the detective added:
"There's also a second matter. We believe someone has been using Olivia Bennett's identity to authorize those transactions.""
