Chapter 2: The Woman Who Knew Everything

I climbed the staircase without waiting for Daniel.

Behind me, I heard his shoes striking the marble floor.

"Olivia! Stop right there!""

I kept walking.

"Olivia, I'm warning you!""

Robert opened the door to the private dining room.

And there she was.

Evelyn Bennett.

Daniel's sixty-three-year-old mother sat beside the window, wearing a cream-colored jacket and holding a glass of untouched water.

Her silver hair was neatly arranged.

Her hands trembled.

When she saw me, she stood up.

"Olivia.""

I stopped at the doorway.

The last time I had seen Evelyn, she had accused me of being responsible for Daniel's unhappiness.

She had never liked me.

During our wedding, she complained that my dress looked cheap.

When Sophie was born, she told Daniel that he deserved a son.

And when I refused to give her money for an expensive renovation, she called me selfish.

Yet now she was crying.

"Why are you here?"" I asked.

Evelyn reached for my hand.

"I'm sorry.""

I pulled away.

"You're going to have to be more specific.""

She looked toward the doorway.

Daniel appeared, breathing heavily.

"Mother, what are you doing?""

Evelyn didn't answer.

"Sit down, Olivia. Please.""

Daniel stepped between us.

"Whatever she told you, don't believe it. She's confused.""

His mother laughed bitterly.

"Confused? You told me your wife already knew about Vanessa's pregnancy.""

Daniel's jaw tightened.

"That's none of your business.""

"She's my daughter-in-law!""

"Not for much longer.""

I looked between them.

"Could someone please explain what's happening?""

Evelyn picked up a thick brown envelope from the table.

"I found these documents in Daniel's office three weeks ago.""

Daniel reached for them.

His mother pulled the envelope away.

"Don't you dare.""

He pointed at her.

"Mother, you have no idea what you're doing.""

"Actually, Daniel, for once in my life, I know exactly what I'm doing.""

She pushed the envelope toward me.

I opened it.

Inside were bank statements, photographs, medical records, and several printed emails.

The first photograph showed Daniel standing outside a hospital.

The date was six months earlier.

The second showed Vanessa entering a private medical clinic.

The third was a medical report.

I stared at the heading.

VASECTOMY FOLLOW-UP REPORT.

My fingers went cold.

I looked at Daniel.

"What is this?""

He said nothing.

Evelyn answered.

"Three years ago, Daniel underwent a vasectomy.""

I looked down again.

The document included his name, the procedure date, and the doctor's signature.

I remembered that period.

Daniel had told me he was experiencing severe abdominal pain.

He had spent two days at a hospital and later claimed the doctors had performed a minor procedure.

He had asked me not to visit because he wanted privacy.

I had respected his wishes.

Now I understood why.

"Why didn't you tell me?"" I whispered.

Daniel rubbed his forehead.

"Because I didn't want more children.""

I stared at him.

"We discussed having another baby.""

"I changed my mind.""

"You told me you wanted to wait until Sophie was older!""

"Well, I changed my mind, Olivia!""

Vanessa appeared in the doorway.

She had followed him upstairs.

"What's taking so long?""

Then she noticed the papers in my hands.

Her face changed.

"Daniel?""

Evelyn turned toward her.

"Tell Olivia how you became pregnant.""

Vanessa looked uncomfortable.

"That's a private matter.""

"Not anymore," Evelyn replied.

Daniel moved toward his mother.

"Stop this.""

Evelyn slapped the table.

"No! You have lied to this woman for ten years. You have stolen from her business.

You have brought another woman into her anniversary dinner. And now you expect everyone to keep protecting you?""

I stared at the medical report.

"Daniel, if you had a vasectomy three years ago, how is Vanessa pregnant?""

He swallowed.

"Procedures aren't always successful.""

Evelyn shook her head.

"The doctor confirmed it was successful. Daniel had two follow-up tests. Both showed no sperm.""

Vanessa suddenly raised her voice.

"That doesn't mean anything! Medical mistakes happen!""

Evelyn pulled another document from the envelope.

"This is the report from the fertility specialist. Your pregnancy was confirmed six months ago. Daniel's medical records show he couldn't have fathered this child naturally.""

I looked at Vanessa.

She was no longer rubbing her stomach.

Her hands were gripping the straps of her handbag.

"Who is the father?"" I asked.

Nobody answered.

I turned to Daniel.

"Is it someone else?""

He looked away.

That silence was worse than any confession.

Then Evelyn removed a photograph from the envelope.

"There's something else you need to understand.""

She placed it on the table.

It showed Vanessa kissing a man outside a hotel in Miami.

The man's face was partially visible.

He had dark hair, broad shoulders, and a familiar smile.

I leaned closer.

Then I stopped breathing.

"That's impossible.""

Evelyn nodded through her tears.

"Yes. That's what I thought too.""

I picked up the photograph.

The man was wearing a wedding ring.

A ring identical to Daniel's.

But his face wasn't Daniel's.

It was someone I had seen in old family photographs.

Someone whose funeral I had attended eight years earlier.

Someone Daniel had told me had died in a terrible car accident.

His identical twin brother.

Michael Bennett.

I looked up.

"Daniel...""

He closed his eyes.

I could barely form the next words.

"Your brother is alive?""

Daniel didn't answer.

Vanessa suddenly rushed forward.

"Give me that photograph!""

I stepped backward.

"Who is Michael?""

She looked at Daniel.

And for the first time, I saw genuine fear in her eyes.

Daniel grabbed her arm.

"Vanessa, don't say anything.""

But Evelyn stood up.

"She deserves the truth.""

Daniel's face had gone completely white.

"Mother, please.""

Evelyn reached into her handbag and removed another photograph.

This one showed two men standing beside a black Mercedes.

One was Daniel.

The other was Michael.

But what caught my attention wasn't their faces.

It was the date printed on the back.

Three weeks ago.

I stared at it.

May you like

Then Evelyn whispered something that made the room go silent.

"Michael didn't just survive the accident, Olivia. Daniel helped him disappear.""
