Chapter 13: The Brother My Father Hid From Me

I stared at the identification card in Michael's hand.

Jonathan Reed.

My father's surname.

My father's eyes.

My father's date of birth.

I looked at the man I had known as Michael Bennett for nearly ten years and struggled to recognize him.

"You're my brother?""

Michael lowered his eyes.

"Yes, Olivia.""

I stepped backward.

"How long have you known?""

"Since I was twenty-one.""

I shook my head.

"No. That's not possible. My father never mentioned having another child.""

"He didn't want you to know.""

"Why?""

Michael took a deep breath.

"Because your father had an affair before he married your mother. My mother was a woman named Margaret Reed. She worked with Thomas in his first business.""

I stared at him.

"Did my mother know?""

Michael nodded.

"She found out when I was a baby. Your parents nearly divorced, but eventually your father convinced her to stay.""

I felt a sharp ache in my chest.

My mother had died when I was young.

I had grown up believing my parents had a perfect marriage.

Now I was discovering that even the people I had loved most had kept enormous secrets.

"Why did you become Daniel's twin?""

Michael looked toward the window.

"Because your father arranged it.""

I frowned.

"What?""

"When I was a teenager, Daniel and I met through a private business program. We looked almost identical. Thomas realized that our resemblance could help protect us if his financial enemies ever came looking.""

I couldn't believe what I was hearing.

"So you pretended to be brothers?""

"We became close. Daniel knew I was Thomas's son. He accepted the arrangement because my father promised to help him build his career.""

"And you let everyone believe you were identical twins?""

Michael nodded.

"Daniel eventually became my business partner. We used the Bennett name publicly because it was easier to explain our connection.""

I looked down.

"And when Daniel disappeared you, everyone believed his brother had died.""

Michael nodded again.

"But the truth is that I was never Daniel's biological brother. I was your father's son.""

I sat down.

My mind was struggling to process everything.

The family I thought I knew had been built on secrets.

Then I remembered Ethan's warning.

"Who ordered my father's death?""

Michael's expression darkened.

"Ethan Cross.""

"Why would a financial investigator kill my father?""

"Because he wasn't really a financial investigator.""

Michael opened his briefcase and removed several documents.

"Ethan worked for a private investment group that wanted control of your father's company. He had been manipulating the accounts for years.""

I examined the papers.

Several transfers were connected to the same offshore company.

The name appeared repeatedly.

CROSS GLOBAL HOLDINGS.

Michael continued.

"Your father discovered the scheme. He threatened to expose Ethan, Victor, and everyone involved.""

"And Daniel?""

"He helped them.""

I closed my eyes.

"Why?""

"Money. Fear. Ambition. Take your pick.""

I looked at him.

"Why did you let me marry Daniel?""

Michael's expression crumbled.

"I tried to stop it.""

"What?""

"Your father told me Daniel was dangerous. I confronted him before your wedding. He promised he had changed.""

"Then why didn't you tell me?""

"Because your father made me promise not to expose the family secret unless it became absolutely necessary.""

I laughed bitterly.

"Everyone made promises while I lived in the dark.""

Michael lowered his head.

"You're right.""

Before I could respond, Detective Harris entered the room.

"We have a problem.""

He placed his phone on the table.

A photograph showed Victor Shaw entering a private airport terminal.

"He's trying to leave the country," the detective explained.

"We've issued an alert.""

"Can you stop him?""

"We're working on it.""

Then he turned toward Michael.

"We also identified the man who sent the message to Olivia.""

Michael stiffened.

"Who?""

"Ethan Cross.""

Detective Harris showed us another photograph.

It showed Ethan standing outside a medical facility.

Beside him was a woman.

Rebecca gasped.

"That's Margaret.""

I turned toward her.

"Who?""

Michael's face drained of color.

"My mother.""

I stared at the photograph.

The woman was older, with silver hair and a walking cane.

"She's alive?""

Michael nodded slowly.

"I haven't seen her in eleven years.""

Rebecca looked at the detective.

"Why is she with Ethan?""

The detective enlarged the image.

"Because she's not being held against her will.""

Michael shook his head.

"That's impossible. Margaret has dementia. She wouldn't understand what was happening.""

I looked at him.

"Could she be helping Ethan?""

Michael didn't answer.

Then the detective received another call.

He listened for several seconds.

His expression became grave.

"Understood. We're on our way.""

He ended the call.

"What happened?"" I asked.

"Victor has been arrested.""

I released a breath.

"Finally.""

But Detective Harris wasn't smiling.

"During questioning, he admitted that Ethan has been planning this for eleven years.""

"What exactly has he been planning?""

The detective looked directly at me.

"To take control of your father's estate, your company, and the family trust.""

I frowned.

"But the trust belongs to me.""

"That's the problem. The original beneficiary record contains a second clause. If you die without a direct heir, control passes to another named beneficiary.""

I felt cold.

"Who?""

The detective turned the document toward me.

There were two names.

OLIVIA BENNETT.

And beneath it:

MARGARET REED.

My father's former partner.

Michael's mother.

I stared at the paper.

"Why would my father leave everything to her?""

Michael looked devastated.

"Because he knew she was in danger.""

Then the detective said something that made the room go silent.

"Ethan Cross has already filed a petition claiming Olivia is mentally unfit to manage the trust.""

I looked at Michael.

"How can he do that?""

Michael answered quietly.

"Because he has a medical report signed by a doctor who claims you inherited your father's mental instability.""

I couldn't speak.

And then my phone rang.

A message appeared.

It was from Ethan.

Your father made one final mistake, Olivia. He trusted the wrong daughter.

Below it was a photograph of Sophie sleeping.

And a second message:

Midnight. Bring the original trust deed. Come alone.
