Chapter 1: The Anniversary Dinner That Destroyed My Marriage
"Olivia, move. Vanessa needs your chair more than you do.""
Those were the first words my husband said to me on our tenth wedding anniversary.
He wasn't joking.
He wasn't embarrassed.
And he certainly wasn't sorry.
He was standing beside a beautiful young woman with one hand wrapped around her waist and the other resting protectively over her pregnant belly.
I looked at him for several seconds, waiting for him to laugh and tell me this was some terrible misunderstanding.
But Daniel Bennett simply pulled out the chair beside mine.
"Come on, Olivia. Don't make a scene.""
My name is Olivia Bennett. I was thirty-six years old, had been married to Daniel for ten years, and had a seven-year-old daughter named Sophie.
Until that evening, I believed I had built a beautiful life.
We owned a large house outside Atlanta, Georgia. Daniel drove a luxury SUV, and I ran a successful event-planning company that I had started from nothing twelve years earlier.
Our daughter attended a private elementary school.
We took family vacations.
We celebrated birthdays.
And every year, Daniel and I went somewhere special for our anniversary.
At least, that's what I thought our marriage meant.
That evening, I arrived at Bellmont, one of Atlanta's most expensive restaurants, twenty minutes early.
I wore a navy-blue dress Daniel had bought me during our honeymoon.
I still remembered that trip.
We had been young, broke, and ridiculously in love.
Daniel had kissed my forehead and promised, "Ten years from now, Olivia, I'll make you happier than you could ever imagine.""
I had believed him.
In my handbag was a small velvet box containing a silver watch engraved with his initials.
I had saved for months to buy it.
When Daniel finally walked through the restaurant doors, I smiled.
Then I saw the woman beside him.
She looked about twenty-eight.
Long blonde hair. Designer handbag. Expensive heels.
And a pregnancy that was impossible to miss.
Daniel didn't even release her hand when he approached our table.
"Olivia, this is Vanessa Miller.""
I slowly lowered my handbag.
"Who is she, Daniel?""
Vanessa answered before he could.
"I'm his girlfriend.""
My ears began ringing.
Daniel pulled out his chair and sat down as though he had just introduced a business associate.
"Actually, Olivia, there's something we need to discuss.""
I looked at their hands.
His wedding ring was still on his finger.
"Daniel, why are you holding her hand?""
Vanessa smiled.
"Because I'm carrying his baby.""
She rubbed her stomach.
"We're having a boy.""
For a moment, the restaurant seemed to disappear.
I could hear silverware touching plates somewhere behind me, but everything at our table had gone silent.
My fingers loosened.
The velvet gift box fell onto the floor.
Daniel glanced at it.
"What's that?""
"Your anniversary present.""
He didn't bend down to pick it up.
Instead, he sighed.
"Olivia, we've been unhappy for a long time. I want a divorce.""
I stared at him.
"Ten years, Daniel. You couldn't even wait until tomorrow?""
Vanessa gave a small laugh.
"Honestly, I think he's been waiting long enough.""
I turned toward her.
"This is between my husband and me.""
She raised her eyebrows.
"Not anymore, sweetheart.""
Then she pointed toward my chair.
"Would you mind moving? These seats are uncomfortable, and I need something with better back support.""
I looked at Daniel.
Surely he would tell her to stop.
Surely he would remember that I was his wife.
Instead, he loosened his tie and said, "Just give her the chair, Olivia. She's pregnant.""
I felt something inside me go very still.
For ten years, I had supported this man.
When he lost his job, I paid the mortgage.
When his investment failed, I used my savings to cover his debts.
When his mother needed expensive medical treatment, I paid the bills without asking him to repay a cent.
I had even worked through the night during my pregnancy to keep my company alive.
And now he wanted me to surrender my seat to the woman carrying his child.
I stood up.
Vanessa smiled triumphantly.
"See? That wasn't so hard.""
I picked up my handbag.
But before I could leave, a waiter approached.
He was an older gentleman with silver hair. His name tag read ROBERT.
"Mrs. Bennett?""
I nodded.
"Yes?""
He glanced briefly at Daniel before lowering his voice.
"There's something I believe you should see.""
Daniel immediately frowned.
"Whatever it is, you can tell us.""
Robert hesitated.
"I'm afraid this concerns Mrs. Bennett personally.""
Daniel pushed his chair back.
"Robert, don't get involved in things that don't concern you.""
The waiter ignored him.
He handed me a folded receipt.
"Please look at the reservation details, ma'am.""
I unfolded the paper.
It was a receipt from the restaurant's private dining room upstairs.
The date was the previous Saturday.
The total was $6,850.
But the amount wasn't what made my stomach tighten.
Beneath the reservation details were several printed words.
PRIVATE ENGAGEMENT CELEBRATION.
DANIEL BENNETT AND VANESSA MILLER.
I read it twice.
Then I looked at my husband.
"Engagement?""
Vanessa's smile disappeared.
Daniel reached across the table.
"Give me that.""
I stepped backward.
"You're engaged to her?""
"Olivia, lower your voice.""
"You brought me here to announce your divorce while you're already engaged to another woman?""
Vanessa crossed her arms.
"Daniel said you were practically separated.""
I laughed.
It was an ugly, broken sound.
"Really? Then why did he come home to my bed every night?""
Daniel grabbed the receipt.
"Enough!""
But Robert wasn't finished.
"Sir, there's another matter.""
Daniel froze.
Robert adjusted his glasses.
"The payment for the engagement celebration was charged to the business account registered under Mrs. Bennett's name.""
I slowly opened my banking application.
There it was.
$6,850.
Paid from the company account I had spent twelve years building.
The account Daniel had access to because I trusted him.
I looked at Vanessa.
"You celebrated your engagement using my money?""
She shrugged.
"Daniel said everything would eventually belong to him.""
Daniel's expression changed.
"Vanessa, shut up.""
I looked at him.
For the first time that evening, I wasn't crying.
I was furious.
I reached for my phone.
Daniel grabbed my wrist.
"Don't you dare embarrass me!""
I pulled away.
"Take your hands off me.""
Robert stepped closer.
Then he spoke quietly.
"Mrs. Bennett, there's someone upstairs who specifically requested to see you tonight.""
Daniel suddenly stood.
His chair crashed backward.
"NO! SHE ISN'T GOING UP THERE!""
The entire restaurant turned toward us.
I stared at him.
He looked terrified.
Not angry.
Terrified.
And suddenly, I understood that the affair wasn't the only secret he had been keeping.
I picked up my handbag.
"Who is waiting for me, Robert?""
The waiter glanced toward the staircase.
"Your husband's mother, ma'am.""
My heart stopped.
May you like
Because Evelyn Bennett had not spoken to me in almost two years.
And Daniel had just reacted as though seeing her might destroy him.
