Chapter 10: The Night the Truth Returned
The darkness lasted only a few seconds.
But in those seconds, every fear I had buried came rushing back.
The sound of my own breathing.
Sophie’s bedroom upstairs.
The unknown person outside.
My father’s warning.
“Everyone away from the windows.””
His voice was calm.
Controlled.
The same voice that had guided soldiers through impossible situations.
I grabbed Sophie’s hand.
She was shaking.
“Mommy?””
I pulled her close.
“It’s okay.””
But my voice betrayed me.
She heard the fear.
My father moved through the dark hallway carefully.
Not rushing.
Not panicking.
Just moving with purpose.
The emergency lights turned on a moment later.
A faint glow filled the room.
The front door was still locked.
The windows were untouched.
But on the porch…
there was an envelope.
My father stared at it.
“No one touches that.””
The officer beside him nodded.
They carefully collected it.
A few minutes later, they opened it.
Inside was a single piece of paper.
Three words.
“Ask your father.””
I looked at him.
“What does that mean?””
My father didn’t answer.
Because he already knew.
The question wasn’t about Daniel.
It was about him.
“Dad?””
He sat down slowly.
“I need to tell you something.””
My stomach tightened.
“Another secret?””
His eyes filled with regret.
“Yes.””
I looked away.
“How many more are there?””
He didn’t defend himself.
“I deserve that.””
The honesty hurt.
But it also made me listen.
“Your mother wasn’t just investigating my company.””
He paused.
“She was investigating someone inside our family.””
I frowned.
“Who?””
My father looked at the letter.
“Her own brother.””
I froze.
“My uncle?””
He nodded.
“Your mother’s brother, Richard.””
I tried to remember.
I barely knew him.
He disappeared from our lives when I was young.
“Why didn’t I know?””
“Because your mother wanted you protected.””
My father opened another folder.
“Richard had access to financial records. He was helping Daniel’s father move money.””
My hands went cold.
“And my mother found out.””
“Yes.””
I whispered:
“She died because of what she discovered.””
My father looked down.
“We never proved it.””
“Why?””
“Because the evidence disappeared.””
I looked toward the envelope.
“Until now.””
He nodded.
The room went silent.
Then Daniel appeared at the doorway.
Everyone turned.
My father immediately stepped between us.
“What are you doing here?””
Daniel looked exhausted.
“I came to warn you.””
I laughed bitterly.
“After everything?””
He looked at me.
“I know what it looks like.””
“You hurt me.””
His face dropped.
“I know.””
“You lied to me.””
“I know.””
“You used me.””
He swallowed.
“I know.””
The fact that he admitted it made it worse.
“Then why are you here?””
Daniel looked at my father.
“Because Patricia isn’t trying to save herself anymore.””
A cold feeling moved through me.
“What does that mean?””
“She’s trying to erase everyone connected to the truth.””
My father stared.
“Who else?””
Daniel looked toward the door.
Then whispered:
“Me.””
Nobody spoke.
“You think I’m part of this,” Daniel continued.
“You’re right. I was.””
My father’s expression hardened.
“But?””
Daniel looked at me.
“But I found out what my family really did.””
I wanted to hate him.
I tried.
But the fear in his eyes looked real.
“What happened?””
Daniel sat down.
“My father didn’t just steal money.””
He looked at me.
“He framed your father.””
My father went still.
“He planted evidence.””
The officer stepped closer.
“Do you have proof?””
Daniel nodded.
“I know where it is.””
My father stared.
“Where?””
Daniel looked at me.
“In the place where your mother kept her final records.””
My heart stopped.
“Where?””
May you like
Daniel whispered:
“Your childhood home.””
