Chapter 11: The Room My Mother Left Behind

The old house looked smaller than I remembered.

Maybe because I was older.

Maybe because I carried more pain now.

I stood outside the front door with my father beside me.

This was the house where I grew up.

Where my mother cooked dinner.

Where my father taught me how to ride a bike.

Where I believed my family was unbreakable.

Until it wasn’t.

“I haven’t been here in years,” I whispered.

My father looked at the door.

“Neither have I.””

I looked at him.

“Why?””

His eyes lowered.

“Because every room reminded me of losing both of you.””

That hurt.

Because I realized something.

He had been grieving too.

We entered with the officers.

Dust covered the furniture.

But everything was still there.

The old photographs.

The wooden staircase.

The small marks on the wall showing my height as I grew.

Sophie held my hand.

“Mommy, this was your house?””

“Yes.””

“Where Grandpa lived?””

“Yes.””

She smiled.

“I like it.””

I smiled sadly.

“Me too.””

Then Daniel walked in.

I didn’t want him there.

But he was the only person who knew where to look.

He stopped in the hallway.

“My father came here once.””

My father turned.

“When?””

“Before my mother died.””

Silence.

“Why?””

Daniel looked uncomfortable.

“To find something.””

My father’s expression changed.

“The records.””

Daniel nodded.

We moved toward my old bedroom.

I stared at the walls.

My childhood memories felt strange now.

Like they belonged to someone else.

Daniel walked toward the closet.

“He said your mother hid everything somewhere she knew you would never forget.””

I frowned.

“She knew I would come back?””

“No.””

Daniel shook his head.

“She knew your father would.””

My father opened the closet.

Nothing.

Then he noticed something.

A loose wooden panel.

Behind it was a small metal box.

My hands shook.

Inside were letters.

A journal.

And a small flash drive.

My father stared.

“Your mother.””

I picked up the journal.

The first page had my name.

“Emily.””

I opened it.

The handwriting was hers.

“My daughter, if you ever find this, it means the truth finally reached you.””

I covered my mouth.

I kept reading.

“I know you may be angry with your father.””

My father looked away.

“But please understand. He was trying to protect you.””

Tears filled my eyes.

The next pages explained everything.

My mother had discovered the fraud.

She had discovered Daniel’s father and Richard working together.

She had also discovered something worse.

A plan.

A plan to use me.

To get access to my father’s remaining assets.

I looked at Daniel.

His face was pale.

“My father knew.””

I nodded slowly.

“He knew about me.””

Daniel looked broken.

“Yes.””

The room became silent.

Then the flash drive was connected.

A video appeared.

My mother’s face filled the screen.

Older memories.

A moment stolen from time.

My knees almost gave out.

“Emily…”

Her voice.

After all these years.

“If you are watching this, I’m sorry you had to find the truth this way.””

I cried silently.

She continued.

“I need you to know something.””

The video shook slightly.

“I was not afraid of losing money.””

She looked directly into the camera.

“I was afraid of losing my daughter.””

Then she said the words that changed everything.

“The person who betrayed us is not the person you think.””

My father leaned closer.

Everyone watched.

My mother looked frightened.

“Richard was only a piece of the plan.””

A pause.

Then:

“The person who started everything…”

The screen suddenly flickered.

The video stopped.

Everyone froze.

Because the final frame showed a name.

A name none of us expected.

May you like

My father whispered:

“No.””
