Chapter 8: The House of Secrets

Patricia’s house looked exactly how I expected.

Perfect.

Clean.

Expensive.

The kind of place where someone could hide ugly things behind beautiful walls.

My father stood beside me as we walked toward the front door.

“I still can’t believe she did this.””

I looked at him.

“I can.””

He turned.

“You can?””

I nodded slowly.

“I saw who she was.””

I remembered every cruel comment.

Every time she made me feel small.

Every time she reminded me that I was lucky Daniel chose me.

“I just didn’t want to believe it.””

My father’s expression softened.

“That’s because you’re kind.””

I shook my head.

“No.””

I looked at the house.

“I was scared.””

He didn’t argue.

Because he knew.

The door opened before we knocked.

Patricia stood there.

Her face immediately changed when she saw us.

“Emily.””

Her voice was fake.

Sweet.

Concerned.

“What are you doing here?””

I stared at her.

“Looking for answers.””

She smiled.

“I don’t know what you mean.””

My father stepped forward.

“Where are the company records?””

Her expression froze.

Only for a second.

But enough.

“You have no right to come here.””

My father looked at her.

“You lost that argument when you helped your son hurt my daughter.””

Her face hardened.

“I have no idea what you’re talking about.””

Rachel stepped forward.

“Then you won’t mind us looking.””

Patricia laughed.

“You think you can accuse me?””

She pointed at my father.

“You were never a good father.””

The words hit me.

But this time, they didn’t break me.

Because I knew the truth.

My father stayed calm.

“You don’t get to talk about my relationship with my daughter.””

Patricia smiled.

“You abandoned her.””

I looked at her.

“No.””

She turned.

I took a step closer.

“You don’t get to use my pain to hide what you did.””

For the first time, Patricia looked uncomfortable.

The police entered behind us with a search authorization.

Her face changed completely.

“You can’t do this.””

The officer replied calmly.

“We can.””

The search began.

Minutes passed.

Then an officer called from upstairs.

“Colonel Carter.””

We followed.

Inside Patricia’s bedroom closet was a locked box.

My father stared.

“Open it.””

The officer unlocked it.

Inside were files.

Photos.

Copies of emails.

And one envelope.

My name was written on the front.

Emily.

My hands shook.

I picked it up.

“What is this?””

My father looked worried.

“I don’t know.””

I opened it.

Inside was a letter.

My mother’s handwriting.

I stopped breathing.

My mother.

The woman I lost years ago.

The woman whose death started everything.

The letter began:

“Emily, if you are reading this, something went wrong.””

Tears filled my eyes.

I kept reading.

“I need you to know that your father never abandoned you.””

I covered my mouth.

My father turned away.

Trying to hide his emotion.

The letter continued.

“He protected you because someone close to us was dangerous.””

I looked at Patricia.

Her face was pale.

Then the final sentence caught my attention.

“Trust the person who stayed silent, not the person who kept talking.””

I looked up.

Everyone was silent.

Because suddenly…

we all realized the letter wasn’t only about Daniel.

It was about someone else.

Someone who had been near me for years.

Someone who knew exactly how to manipulate me.

Then my father found something beneath the letter.

A photograph.

He picked it up.

And his face changed.

“What?””

He handed it to me.

It was a picture of my mother.

Standing beside someone.

Someone I recognized.

I dropped the photo.

May you like

Because the person beside my mother…

was Daniel’s father.
