Chapter 2: The Colonel at the Door

Nobody moved.

The entire house felt frozen.

Daniel stood in the middle of the bedroom holding the belt, but his confidence was gone.

The man outside knocked again.

This time harder.

“Emily. Step away from him.””

My eyes filled with tears.

Because after four years of silence…

my father knew exactly what I needed him to say.

Daniel looked at me.

“You actually called him?””

I didn’t answer.

Patricia’s face had changed completely.

She wasn’t laughing anymore.

“That’s impossible.””

I slowly pushed myself up from the floor.

My shoulder burned.

“My father is here.””

Daniel shook his head.

“He wouldn’t come.””

The knocking continued.

“Open this door now.””

Something about that voice made Daniel step backward.

Not because it was loud.

Because it was certain.

He had heard stories about my father.

Everyone had.

Colonel William Carter.

Thirty years in the military.

A man who spent his life walking into dangerous situations while everyone else walked away.

But Daniel never respected him.

He always called him a ghost.

A man who chose his uniform over his family.

A man who abandoned his daughter.

At least, that was the story Daniel believed.

I walked toward the bedroom door.

Daniel grabbed my arm.

“Don’t.””

I looked at his hand.

Then at his face.

“Let go.””

For the first time, I didn’t sound afraid.

Maybe because I knew I wasn’t alone anymore.

He released me.

I opened the bedroom door.

The hallway light spilled into the room.

And standing at the front entrance was my father.

Older.

Gray hair at his temples.

Still standing straight.

Still carrying himself like the world couldn’t push him down.

His eyes found me.

Then they moved to the bruise forming on my shoulder.

The room went silent.

“Emily.””

I broke.

Not because I was weak.

Because I had spent years pretending I didn’t need him.

“Dad…”

He crossed the room immediately.

He didn’t ask questions.

He didn’t demand explanations.

He simply wrapped his arms around me.

The same way he did when I was a little girl.

“I’m here.””

Those two words destroyed the wall I had built around my heart.

Behind him, two officers entered.

Daniel’s face went pale.

“You called the police too?””

I looked at him.

“Yes.””

Patricia stepped forward.

“This is a family matter.””

My father turned.

And the calm expression disappeared.

“No.””

His voice was quiet.

But everyone heard it.

“This is not a family matter.””

Patricia swallowed.

“You don’t understand what happened.””

My father looked at the belt on the floor.

Then at Daniel.

“I understand enough.””

Daniel tried to recover.

“She attacked me emotionally for years. She hid money. She disrespected me.””

My father stared at him.

“You think that justifies this?””

Daniel looked away.

The officer picked up the belt carefully.

“Sir, we need everyone’s statement.””

Patricia immediately stepped between them.

“She’s exaggerating.””

I stared at her.

“You watched.””

Her eyes narrowed.

“I saw an argument.””

“No.””

My voice shook.

“You watched.””

The room became quiet.

Then a small voice came from upstairs.

“Mom?””

Everyone turned.

Sophie stood halfway down the stairs.

Holding her stuffed rabbit.

My heart broke.

“Oh my God…”

I rushed toward her.

She ran into my arms.

“Mommy, are you okay?””

I hugged her tightly.

“I’m okay now.””

My father looked at Sophie.

And something changed in his face.

Pain.

Regret.

“She’s your daughter?””

Daniel said coldly.

My father looked at him.

“She’s my granddaughter.””

Sophie looked confused.

“You’re Grandpa William?””

My father knelt down.

“Yes, sweetheart.””

“You came?””

He smiled sadly.

“Of course I came.””

She looked at me.

“Mom said you were far away.””

My throat tightened.

I didn’t know what to say.

Because the truth was complicated.

My father hadn’t abandoned me.

I had walked away.

Four years ago, after my mother died, my father and I had one terrible argument.

I told him I hated that the military always came first.

He told me I didn’t understand the sacrifices he made.

And then I left.

I changed my number.

I refused every message.

I thought I was protecting myself.

But tonight, when I called him…

he answered in one ring.

Daniel watched us carefully.

Then he said something that made my father freeze.

“You don’t know the whole story, Colonel.””

My father slowly stood.

“What does that mean?””

Daniel smiled weakly.

“You should ask your daughter why she really left.””

My heart dropped.

Because I knew exactly what he was trying to do.

He wanted to turn my father against me.

Again.

But before anyone could speak, my father’s phone rang.

He looked at the screen.

His expression changed.

“Who is it?”” I asked.

He didn’t answer.

Because the name on the screen was someone I never expected to see again.

And when he answered the call…

the first words he heard made his entire face go pale.

“Colonel Carter, we found the file you asked us to locate.””

I froze.

File?

My father looked directly at me.

Then at Daniel.

And I knew this night was not just about what happened in my bedroom.

Something from my past had just returned.

Something Daniel knew about.

May you like

Something my father had been searching for.

For four years.
