Chapter 7: The Person Behind the Betrayal
The next morning, I woke up before the sun.
For years, mornings in my house meant pretending.
Pretending Daniel’s anger was normal.
Pretending Patricia’s cruelty was just “old-fashioned.””
Pretending Sophie didn’t notice the tension around her.
But that morning was different.
Because for the first time, I wasn’t pretending.
I walked into the kitchen and found my father already there.
He was sitting quietly with a folder open in front of him.
“You didn’t sleep,” I said.
He looked up.
“Neither did you.””
I sat across from him.
“What did the message mean?””
My father closed the folder.
“I don’t know yet.””
“But you have a suspicion.””
He looked away.
That was enough of an answer.
“Dad.””
He sighed.
“When I investigated the missing money from my company, I found three people who had access.””
“Who?””
“One was Daniel.””
My stomach tightened.
“The second?””
“An accountant.””
“And the third?””
My father hesitated.
“Someone I trusted.””
Before I could ask more, the sound of a car door closing interrupted us.
I looked through the window.
A black SUV was parked outside.
My heart raced.
“Who is that?””
My father stood immediately.
“I don’t know.””
The front door opened.
A woman stepped inside.
She looked familiar.
Older.
Professional.
And nervous.
“Colonel Carter?””
My father’s expression changed.
“Rachel.””
I froze.
The woman from the phone.
She looked at me.
“Emily.””
I stood.
“You came here?””
She nodded.
“I couldn’t say everything over the phone.””
My father closed the door behind her.
“What did you find?””
Rachel pulled a small envelope from her bag.
“I found the person who helped Daniel.””
My hands went cold.
“Who?””
She looked at my father.
Then at me.
“Patricia.””
The room went silent.
I almost laughed.
Not because it was funny.
Because it was impossible.
“My mother-in-law?””
Rachel nodded.
“She knew about the company investigation before Daniel did.””
My father stared.
“How?””
Rachel opened the envelope.
“Because she was the one feeding him information.””
I looked at the documents.
Emails.
Bank transfers.
Messages.
Patricia’s name appeared again and again.
“No…”
My voice barely came out.
Rachel looked at me sadly.
“I’m sorry.””
I remembered her standing in the doorway.
Watching.
Laughing.
Not shocked.
Not surprised.
Because she knew exactly what kind of man her son was.
My father looked furious.
“She helped him.””
Rachel nodded.
“And she helped him get close to you.””
I felt sick.
“Why?””
Rachel looked down.
“Because your father’s company had a trust fund.””
I stared.
“For me?””
“For Sophie.””
My breath caught.
“What?””
Rachel explained.
“After your mother died, your father created a protected account for his future grandchildren. Daniel discovered it existed.””
Everything suddenly made sense.
The savings account.
The anger.
The accusations.
It wasn’t about money I saved.
It was about money he couldn’t control.
My father’s hands tightened.
“He married my daughter to reach that account.””
I looked away.
Four years.
My entire marriage.
My entire life.
Built on a lie.
Then my phone rang.
Daniel.
I stared at the screen.
My father looked at me.
“You don’t have to answer.””
But I did.
“Hello?””
His voice came immediately.
“Emily.””
I said nothing.
“I need to talk to you.””
“No.””
“Please listen.””
I almost ended the call.
Then he said:
“Patricia is planning something.””
I froze.
“What?””
Daniel lowered his voice.
“She’s going to destroy the evidence.””
My father moved closer.
I put the phone on speaker.
My father stared.
“Why should we believe you?””
Daniel was silent.
Then:
“Because she’s trying to erase the only thing that can prove what happened.””
Rachel stepped forward.
“What thing?””
Daniel answered:
“The original account records from the company.””
My father’s face changed.
“Where are they?””
A pause.
May you like
Then Daniel whispered:
“Inside my mother’s house.””
