Chapter 9: The Daughter He Sold

I couldn't stop staring at the photograph.

Claire.

Daniel.

My father's house.

The place where I had grown up.

The place where my father had died.

The place where I had spent six months believing I'd finally found the truth.

Apparently, I hadn't even found the beginning.

Michael looked over my shoulder.

"When was this taken?""

"Today.""

Harris took the phone.

"Can you trace the number?""

"We're working on it.""

I looked at Sophie.

She was watching me.

"Does Claire know you?""

Sophie nodded.

"She came to see me once.""

"When?""

"Last month.""

"What did she say?""

Sophie hugged her backpack.

"She said Daniel was scared.""

"Of what?""

"Of you.""

I almost laughed.

Daniel had never been afraid of me.

He had always been afraid of losing control.

Maybe those were the same thing.

We left the warehouse under police escort.

Harris took the girls to a secure location.

I refused to let Lily out of my sight.

Michael stayed with us.

As soon as we arrived, my phone rang again.

Claire.

I answered.

"Where are you?""

"I'm safe.""

"Are you with Daniel?""

"No.""

"Then why was he with you in that photograph?""

"He found me.""

"What did he want?""

"He wanted me to sign something.""

"What?""

"I don't know.""

I looked at Michael.

"Claire, listen carefully. Did he ever tell you why you were given up?""

She was silent.

Then she said, "He told me you were dead.""

My stomach turned.

"What?""

"He said your father had you declared mentally incompetent after Lily was born.""

"That's a lie.""

"I know.""

"How?""

"Because I found the records.""

I sat down.

"What records?""

"The original birth records.""

Michael leaned closer.

Claire continued.

"They say my biological mother was Emily Carter.""

I closed my eyes.

"And my biological father was Daniel Carter.""

My chest tightened.

"Then why did Daniel give you away?""

"Because I wasn't supposed to survive.""

The room went silent.

"What do you mean?""

Claire's breathing became shaky.

"Your father discovered Daniel had another family.""

I stared at Michael.

"Another family?""

"Before you.""

Claire continued.

"Daniel had a woman in Oklahoma.""

Michael's face changed.

"What was her name?""

Claire said, "Rachel.""

I felt something click.

A name I'd heard before.

Rachel Bennett.

The woman whose name appeared on one of Daniel's old tax documents.

I'd asked him about her years ago.

He'd said she was a former employee.

Claire whispered, "She was my grandmother.""

I couldn't speak.

Michael took the phone.

"Claire, did Daniel have anything to do with Rachel's death?""

Claire went silent.

Then:

"Yes.""

My heart stopped.

"What happened?""

"He caused the accident.""

Michael closed his eyes.

Claire continued.

"She had evidence against him.""

"What evidence?""

"The same thing your father had.""

I took the phone back.

"What?""

"The offshore accounts.""

I looked at Harris.

He was already listening.

Claire's voice trembled.

"Your father discovered Daniel was laundering money through companies registered in other people's names.""

"How much?""

"Enough to destroy him.""

"Then why didn't my father report him?""

"Because Daniel threatened you.""

I remembered my father's final weeks.

His fear.

His warnings.

His sudden insistence that I stay away from the company.

I had thought grief had changed him.

It hadn't.

He had been trying to protect me.

Claire suddenly whispered, "There's something else.""

"What?""

"The original trust wasn't created for the company.""

"What was it created for?""

"For us.""

"Us?""

"All three daughters.""

I froze.

"Lily. Sophie. Me.""

Michael looked at me.

"Three?""

Claire continued.

"Daniel had three biological daughters.""

I stared at Sophie.

Then Lily.

Then the photograph of Claire.

Three girls.

Three secrets.

One father.

Claire said, "Your father built the trust so none of us could be used by Daniel.""

"Where is it?""

"I don't know.""

"Then why did you call me?""

"Because Daniel is looking for it.""

I stood.

"Why?""

"Because the trust contains the one thing that can put him in prison.""

"What?""

Claire's voice dropped.

"Your father's original ledger.""

Michael's eyes widened.

The ledger.

I'd heard my father mention it once.

A black leather book he kept locked in his office.

I'd never seen it.

Claire whispered, "Daniel doesn't know where it is.""

"Do you?""

"No.""

"Then who does?""

She hesitated.

"Your mother.""

My entire body went still.

"My mother died when I was twelve.""

"I know.""

"Then what are you saying?""

Claire's voice broke.

"She didn't die.""

I couldn't move.

Michael stared at me.

Claire continued.

"Your father told everyone she was dead because he was hiding her from Daniel.""

The room seemed to disappear.

My mother had been gone for twenty years.

Or so I'd believed.

Then Claire said the words that shattered everything I thought I knew.

"She's alive, Emily.""

A pause.

"And she's the one who has the ledger.""

The call ended.

I stood frozen.

Then my phone buzzed one more time.

A new message.

No number.

Just an address.

And beneath it:

*Come alone if you want to meet your mother.*

I looked at Michael.

For the first time since the divorce began, he didn't try to stop me.

He simply said:

May you like

"Emily, I think your father knew you'd eventually have to choose which truth you could survive.""

And somewhere across Dallas, a clock began counting down from ten minutes.
