Chapter 12: The Evidence Daniel Couldn't Destroy

By the time we returned to the courthouse, the building was surrounded by police.

Daniel had been taken into custody.

His two men were arrested outside the house.

My mother was escorted into a separate room to give her statement.

Michael was waiting for me in the hallway.

The moment he saw me, he crossed the room.

"Are you okay?""

I nodded.

Then I shook my head.

"I don't know.""

He looked at my mother through the glass.

"You found her.""

"She found me.""

"And the ledger?""

I held it up.

"We have the original.""

Michael smiled faintly.

"No.""

I frowned.

"What?""

"This isn't the original.""

My stomach dropped.

He took the book.

"Look at the binding.""

He turned it over.

A thin seam ran along the spine.

"This is a copy.""

I stared.

"My mother said the original was already in court.""

Michael nodded.

"Your father gave it to his attorney before he died.""

"Then why did he leave me this?""

"Because he wanted you to find your mother.""

I looked toward the courtroom.

"Why?""

"Because she knows where the final evidence is.""

Before I could ask, the courtroom doors opened.

Judge Reynolds was seated at the bench.

The clerk motioned toward us.

"Mrs. Carter, please come in.""

Daniel was brought into the room in handcuffs.

Vanessa sat alone.

His attorney stood beside him, looking defeated.

Margaret was seated behind them.

She looked twenty years older than she had that morning.

Judge Reynolds addressed the room.

"We will resume the hearing.""

Daniel's attorney stood.

"Your Honor, given the criminal investigation, we request a continuance.""

"Denied.""

"Your Honor—"

"Your client has spent months representing himself as the sole owner of assets that appear to belong to a marital trust.""

He looked at Daniel.

"And he has apparently provided fraudulent documents to this court.""

Daniel said nothing.

The clerk brought forward a large black ledger.

My heart stopped.

That was it.

The original.

Judge Reynolds opened it.

"The court has reviewed financial records showing millions of dollars transferred from Carter Development into accounts controlled by Mr. Carter.""

Daniel's attorney whispered, "Mr. Carter, say something.""

Daniel stared at me.

"You did this.""

I shook my head.

"No.""

"You ruined me.""

"You did that yourself.""

He leaned forward.

"You think you won?""

Judge Reynolds struck the gavel.

"Mr. Carter.""

Daniel sat back.

The judge continued.

"There is also evidence concerning the ownership trust.""

He turned toward me.

"Mrs. Carter, your father established this trust before your marriage.""

"Yes, Your Honor.""

"Do you understand that the trust is legally separate from Mr. Carter's personal assets?""

"I do now.""

Daniel laughed.

"You don't understand anything.""

The judge looked at him.

"I suggest you stop speaking.""

The clerk handed the judge another document.

He read it.

Then his expression changed.

"Mrs. Carter.""

"Yes?""

"This document concerns your daughter, Lily.""

My chest tightened.

"What does it say?""

The judge hesitated.

"Her birth certificate was altered.""

Daniel closed his eyes.

The judge continued.

"The original record lists a different surname.""

I looked at Michael.

"Reed.""

He nodded.

Judge Reynolds turned another page.

"And there is an amended record.""

"What name?""

He looked directly at me.

"Lily Reed Carter.""

Daniel suddenly stood.

"No.""

The judge frowned.

"Mr. Carter?""

"That's my daughter.""

The judge's voice became cold.

"Biologically, she is not.""

Daniel sank back into his chair.

Vanessa began crying.

Then Judge Reynolds looked at the final document.

"And this may be the most important evidence.""

He held up a signed statement.

"It is from your late father.""

My heart stopped.

"When was it written?""

"Three days before his death.""

I whispered, "The same day he gave me the letter.""

Judge Reynolds nodded.

He read aloud:

"I have spent years protecting Emily from a man who entered her life for one purpose: to steal what she inherited.""

Daniel's face went white.

The judge continued.

"I also made a mistake. I believed hiding Lily's true paternity would keep her safe. Instead, it gave Daniel another weapon.""

Michael lowered his head.

The judge read the next line.

"If Daniel ever brings my daughter into court and claims she owns nothing, give Emily the original ledger.""

He paused.

Then looked at Daniel.

"The ledger contains evidence of every payment made to the people who helped him.""

Daniel's attorney whispered, "Oh God.""

The judge turned the page.

"That includes payments to Margaret Carter.""

Margaret began sobbing.

Daniel turned toward his mother.

"You told me you never took anything.""

She covered her face.

"I'm sorry.""

"You lied to me?""

"I was trying to protect you.""

"You betrayed me.""

She looked up.

"No, Daniel.""

Her voice was broken.

"I betrayed Emily.""

The courtroom went silent.

Then the judge read one final entry.

A payment made eleven years earlier.

To an account belonging to a private adoption agency.

The amount was $250,000.

Description:

*Infant transfer — C.C.*

My heart stopped.

"Claire.""

Daniel stared at the ledger.

The judge looked at him.

"Mr. Carter, did you pay to have your biological daughter removed from her mother's custody?""

Daniel said nothing.

"Answer.""

His lips trembled.

"Yes.""

I closed my eyes.

For the first time, I felt no rage.

Only exhaustion.

Then the courtroom doors opened.

My mother entered.

She walked directly toward me.

In her hand was a small envelope.

She placed it in my palm.

"Your father wanted you to have this only after Daniel confessed.""

I looked at her.

"What is it?""

She whispered:

"Claire's original birth certificate.""

I opened it.

My hands froze.

Under *Mother* was my mother's name.

Under *Father* was Daniel Carter.

But beneath their signatures was one handwritten sentence:

*Twin sister of Lily Carter.*

I stared at the page.

My mother began crying.

Daniel stopped breathing.

And Judge Reynolds slowly stood.

"Mrs. Carter," he said, "I believe we have just discovered why your father kept the final page hidden.""

I looked down.

At the bottom of the certificate was another name.

A third child.

Born the same day.

*Baby Girl — deceased.*

Except beside the word "deceased" someone had drawn a single black line.

And beneath it was a handwritten note:

*She was never dead.*
