Chapter 10: The Woman in the Empty House
The address led me to a house I had seen a thousand times in photographs but never expected to enter again.
My mother's house.
The white two-story home stood at the end of a quiet street north of Dallas, hidden behind overgrown hedges and a rusted iron gate.
I stopped the car.
Ten minutes had already passed.
I was alone.
Or at least, I wanted whoever sent the message to believe I was.
I left my phone in my pocket with the emergency call function ready.
Then I walked toward the front door.
It opened before I knocked.
A woman stood inside.
She had silver hair.
A pale blue sweater.
And the same green eyes I saw every morning when I looked in the mirror.
My knees nearly gave out.
"Mom?""
She covered her mouth.
"Emily.""
I couldn't move.
For twenty years, I had mourned her.
I had remembered a closed casket.
A funeral.
My father's hand gripping mine while everyone told me I was strong.
But my mother was standing in front of me.
Alive.
I stepped inside.
"You let me believe you were dead.""
Her eyes filled with tears.
"Your father told me it was the only way.""
"The only way to do what?""
"Keep Daniel from finding me.""
I shook my head.
"You knew about Daniel?""
"I knew what he was capable of.""
"Then why didn't you tell me?""
She looked toward the hallway.
"Because I wasn't the only person your father was protecting.""
I felt a cold knot form in my stomach.
"Lily?""
She nodded.
"And Sophie.""
I stared at her.
"How do you know Sophie?""
My mother closed the door.
"Because I helped your father hide her.""
I stepped backward.
"You knew where she was?""
"Yes.""
"All these years?""
"Yes.""
My voice broke.
"Why?""
She walked toward a cabinet and removed a small wooden box.
"Because Daniel was looking for her.""
She opened it.
Inside was a black leather ledger.
My heart stopped.
"The ledger.""
She nodded.
"Your father gave it to me the night he disappeared.""
I stared at the book.
"He didn't disappear. He died.""
My mother's expression changed.
"Emily...""
"What?""
"He wasn't supposed to die.""
The room seemed to shrink.
"What are you saying?""
She placed the ledger on the table.
"Your father's death wasn't natural.""
I stared at her.
"The doctors said heart failure.""
"That's what Daniel wanted everyone to believe.""
I opened the ledger.
Page after page contained dates, account numbers, property transfers, names.
Then I saw Daniel's handwriting.
My stomach turned.
"These are payments.""
"Yes.""
"To Rachel Bennett.""
My mother nodded.
"Rachel was blackmailing Daniel.""
"About what?""
"His first child.""
I looked up.
"Claire.""
"Yes.""
My mother's voice became quiet.
"Rachel discovered Daniel had been using your father's company to hide money. She threatened to expose him.""
"And Daniel killed her.""
"Your father believed he did.""
I turned another page.
There was a list of names.
Daniel.
Margaret.
Rachel.
And another name.
My mother's.
Beside it was a date.
Twenty years earlier.
I stared at her.
"Why is your name here?""
She didn't answer.
"Mom.""
She sat down.
"Because your father wasn't the only person who made a terrible mistake.""
"What mistake?""
She looked at me.
"Daniel didn't meet you by accident.""
My blood ran cold.
"What?""
"Your father introduced you.""
"Because he thought Daniel was a good man.""
"No.""
She shook her head.
"Because Daniel already knew who you were.""
I remembered my first date with him.
The flowers.
The expensive restaurant.
His perfect manners.
The way he had somehow known what wine I liked.
I had always called it romantic.
Now it felt calculated.
My mother continued.
"Daniel wanted access to your father's business.""
"So he married me for money.""
"At first.""
"At first?""
She looked toward the ledger.
"Then he discovered something your father had hidden.""
"What?""
"You weren't just the heir.""
She paused.
"You were the controlling beneficiary of everything.""
I stared at her.
"How?""
"Your father created the trust before you were born.""
I looked down at the ledger.
"And Lily?""
"Her existence changed the trust.""
"How?""
My mother opened the final page.
There were three names.
Emily Carter.
Lily Carter.
Claire Bennett.
And beneath them:
*Upon the death of Emily Carter, control transfers equally to her three daughters.*
My breath caught.
"Daniel wants me dead.""
My mother didn't answer.
She didn't need to.
Suddenly headlights swept across the windows.
We both froze.
A car stopped outside.
Then another.
My mother's face went white.
"They found us.""
I reached for my phone.
No signal.
My mother grabbed my wrist.
"There's a back exit.""
"What about you?""
"I'm coming.""
We ran toward the kitchen.
A loud crash came from the front of the house.
Someone had broken the door.
A man's voice echoed through the hallway.
"Emily!""
Daniel.
I stopped.
My mother pulled me toward the back door.
"Don't answer.""
But Daniel shouted again.
"Your mother can't save you.""
Then his voice changed.
It became almost gentle.
"Because she already betrayed your father once.""
My mother stopped moving.
I looked at her.
"What did he mean?""
She closed her eyes.
May you like
And whispered:
"Because Daniel is right.""
