Chapter 15: The Letter He Wanted Me to Open

The old office still smelled like my father.

Dust.

Leather.

Cedar.

And the faint trace of the coffee he used to drink every morning.

I walked through the doorway with Michael beside me.

Anna stood near the window.

She was twenty-two.

Dark hair.

Green eyes.

And a small birthmark near her left ear.

The same birthmark I'd seen on the hospital photograph.

My daughter.

My third daughter.

I stopped several feet away.

"Anna.""

She smiled through tears.

"Mom.""

I crossed the room.

We held each other.

No dramatic speech.

No perfect words.

Just two people trying to understand how much time had been stolen from them.

Michael stood nearby, crying silently.

Anna looked at him.

"Dad?""

He nodded.

She walked into his arms.

For the first time, all three pieces of the truth stood in one room.

Lily.

Claire.

Anna.

Three daughters.

One family.

And one man who had spent years trying to destroy them.

Anna pulled away.

"There's something you need to see.""

She walked toward my father's desk.

Underneath it was a small metal safe.

"Arthur gave me the combination.""

I entered the numbers.

The door opened.

Inside was another envelope.

My name was written on it.

*EMILY.*

I recognized my father's handwriting.

My hands shook as I opened it.

The first page was dated six months before his death.

*My daughter,*

*If you are reading this, Daniel has either tried to take the company or has already succeeded in convincing everyone that you own nothing.*

I looked at Michael.

He said nothing.

I continued.

*I need you to understand why I stayed silent about your daughters.*

My throat tightened.

*I didn't hide them because I was ashamed. I hid them because Daniel threatened to destroy every person connected to you.*

The next page contained a list.

Daniel's fraudulent accounts.

Payments to Margaret.

Payments to Dr. Vale.

Payments to the adoption agency.

And one final payment.

To Arthur Bennett.

I stared at the amount.

Five million dollars.

"Arthur.""

Michael stepped closer.

"He wasn't helping your father.""

I turned the page.

The truth was there.

Arthur had helped Daniel.

He had arranged the fraudulent trust documents.

He had altered the birth records.

He had facilitated Claire's adoption.

And he had hidden Anna.

But there was something else.

A handwritten note from my father:

*Arthur believes he owns the evidence. He doesn't. I placed the original ledger where he would never look.*

I whispered, "The courtroom.""

Michael nodded.

"That's why the judge had it.""

I turned another page.

*The letter you are holding is not the real inheritance.*

I frowned.

The next line made my heart stop.

*You are.*

I read it twice.

My father explained that the company wasn't merely a real estate business.

It was a holding structure.

The properties.

The trusts.

The investments.

Everything had been placed under my control because he knew Daniel would eventually reveal himself.

And then came the final paragraph.

*Emily, Daniel will try to convince you that he married you for love. He didn't. But that isn't the worst thing he did.*

My hands trembled.

*The worst thing he did was convince you that you were powerless.*

I began crying.

Michael put his hand on my shoulder.

My father's final words were simple.

*You were never powerless. You were waiting for proof.*

I folded the letter.

Then Anna spoke.

"Mom.""

I looked at her.

"There's one more thing.""

She handed me a second envelope.

This one wasn't from my father.

It was from Arthur.

I opened it.

Inside was a photograph.

Daniel stood beside Arthur.

Between them was a little girl.

Lily.

But the photograph was dated three years ago.

On the back, Arthur had written:

*Daniel didn't discover the third daughter. He discovered all three.*

Below it was another sentence.

*And he knows where your father hid the fourth file.*

My heart stopped.

"What fourth file?""

Anna shook her head.

"I don't know.""

Then my phone rang.

Judge Reynolds.

I answered.

"Mrs. Carter, I need you to return to court immediately.""

"Why?""

His voice was unusually tense.

"Mr. Carter has just made a statement.""

I looked at Michael.

"What statement?""

"He claims the entire trust was created illegally.""

"Can he prove that?""

"Apparently, he has a witness.""

"Who?""

The judge paused.

Then he said:

"Your father's former attorney.""

My stomach dropped.

"Arthur.""

"Yes.""

I closed my eyes.

After everything—the lies, the forged signatures, the stolen children, the hidden fortune—I finally understood why my father had made me wait six months.

The letter wasn't meant to save me.

It was meant to lead me to the truth.

I looked at my three daughters.

Then at Michael.

And I smiled for the first time in months.

"Let's go to court.""

Because Daniel thought the divorce hearing was where he would take everything from me.

May you like

He was wrong.

It was where my father had arranged for me to take everything back.
