Chapter 9: The Friend Who Knew Everything
I didn’t sleep.
Not because I was afraid.
Because every time I closed my eyes, another memory changed.
That was the worst part about secrets.
They don’t just hurt you in the present.
They rewrite your past.
The person in the photo was Mark.
Daniel’s best friend.
My friend.
The man who helped us move into our first house.
The man who brought food after Michael was born.
The man who stood beside Daniel at our wedding.
The man who once told me:
“Sarah, you’re lucky. Daniel is a good man.””
Now I wondered if he was saying that because he believed it.
Or because he needed me to believe it.
The next morning, Michael found me sitting at the kitchen table.
“You didn’t sleep.””
I looked up.
“Neither did you.””
He shrugged.
“Guess we’re both bad at pretending.””
I almost smiled.
Almost.
Then he sat down.
“Who is Mark?””
I looked at him.
“You saw the picture.””
“Yes.””
I nodded.
“He was your father’s best friend.””
“Was?””
I looked away.
“I don’t know anymore.””
We met Mark at a quiet park outside the city.
He looked different.
Older.
Tired.
When he saw Michael, his face changed.
Like he was seeing a ghost.
“You brought him.””
Michael stepped forward.
“I’m done being the person everyone talks about but nobody tells anything.””
Mark lowered his head.
“You’re right.””
I stared at him.
“Why do you have that picture?””
He didn’t answer.
“Mark.””
He sighed.
“Because I was there.””
My stomach tightened.
“Where?””
“The night Michael was born.””
Michael looked confused.
“You were at the hospital?””
Mark nodded.
“I was.””
“Why?””
He looked at me.
“Because Daniel called me.””
The name alone made my chest hurt.
“What did he say?””
Mark hesitated.
“He said he needed help.””
“With what?””
Mark looked at Michael.
“With the truth.””
The air changed.
Michael’s face hardened.
“Just say it.””
Mark swallowed.
“Daniel knew about Ethan.””
I felt my hands go cold.
“He knew?””
“Yes.””
“From when?””
“Before Michael was born.””
I closed my eyes.
All those years.
All those questions.
All those nights wondering why Daniel changed.
The answer had been there.
“Why didn’t you tell me?””
Mark looked ashamed.
“Because Daniel made me promise.””
I laughed quietly.
A painful sound.
“Everyone made promises.””
Mark looked at me.
“He was scared.””
“Scared?””
“He thought Ethan would take Michael away.””
Michael stepped forward.
“He wasn’t his to take.””
Mark nodded.
“I know.””
“Then why?””
Mark looked at him.
“Because Daniel loved you.””
The words surprised all of us.
“He loved you so much that he became afraid.””
Michael shook his head.
“That doesn’t excuse anything.””
“No.””
Mark agreed.
“It doesn’t.””
A long silence followed.
Then I asked:
“What happened the night Michael was born?””
Mark looked at the ground.
“I saw Ethan.””
My heart stopped.
“You did?””
“Yes.””
“Where?””
“At the hospital.””
Michael whispered:
“My real father was there?””
Mark nodded.
“He came looking for Sarah.””
I felt tears forming.
“Why didn’t I see him?””
Mark looked at me.
“Because Daniel stopped him.””
The world went quiet.
“What?””
Mark’s voice cracked.
“Daniel told Ethan that you didn’t want him there.””
I covered my mouth.
“That’s a lie.””
“Yes.””
Michael looked devastated.
“Dad stole that choice from both of them.””
Mark nodded.
“I know.””
Then he reached into his jacket.
He pulled out a small envelope.
“I kept this because I knew one day the truth would come out.””
I stared at it.
“What is it?””
“Ethan’s letter.””
My hands shook.
“He wrote to me?””
“No.””
Mark looked at Michael.
“He wrote to you.””
Michael took the envelope.
His fingers trembled.
He opened it slowly.
Inside was one page.
A single sentence was visible at the top.
*Dear son, I don’t know if you will ever know my name, but I never stopped looking for you.*
Michael stopped breathing.
Then his phone rang.
He looked at the screen.
A number he didn’t recognize.
He answered.
“Hello?””
Everyone watched him.
His expression changed.
“Wait.””
A pause.
Then:
“You’re saying you found Ethan?””
My heart jumped.
Michael looked at me.
The phone shook in his hand.
The voice on the other end said something we couldn’t hear.
Then Michael whispered:
“He’s alive.””
I stood frozen.
After eighteen years of believing a man disappeared…
May you like
The truth was calling us.
And it was waiting on the other side of the line.
