Chapter 13: The Sister Who Chose The Lie
I didn’t call Emily.
Not immediately.
For the first time in eighteen years, I didn’t chase the truth.
I let it come to me.
Because every time I had searched for answers, I found another person who had decided they knew what was best for me.
Daniel decided.
Chloe decided.
Even Emily decided.
Everyone had protected me by taking away my right to know.
And I was done letting people do that.
Michael sat across from me that night.
He looked exhausted.
Not physically.
Emotionally.
“I don’t understand,” he said.
I looked at him.
“What?””
“How can so many people lie for so long?””
I didn’t have a good answer.
Because I had spent years believing lies only came from strangers.
I never imagined they could come from people who knew your favorite meal.
People who knew how you took your coffee.
People who held your child.
“I think sometimes people convince themselves they’re doing the right thing.””
Michael shook his head.
“That doesn’t make it right.””
“No.””
I reached across the table.
“It doesn’t.””
The next morning, Emily came to my house.
She didn’t call.
She didn’t text.
She simply stood at my door.
Like she knew she didn’t deserve an invitation.
I opened it.
For a few seconds, we just looked at each other.
My sister.
The person who had shared my childhood.
The person who had held my hand when our parents died.
The person I trusted.
Then Michael walked into the room.
Emily’s face broke.
“Oh, Michael.””
He didn’t respond.
She looked at me.
“I’m sorry.””
I stepped aside.
“Come in.””
She entered slowly.
No excuses.
No performance.
Just guilt.
We sat in the living room.
The same room where Emily had once helped me decorate for Michael’s birthday parties.
Now she sat there like a stranger.
“Tell us everything,” I said.
Emily nodded.
“I owe you that.””
Michael crossed his arms.
“Start with why.””
Emily looked down.
“That night at the hospital…”
Her voice shook.
“I found out Daniel was planning to leave.””
I stared.
“You knew?””
“Yes.””
“And you didn’t tell me?””
She closed her eyes.
“No.””
The answer hurt.
Even though I expected it.
“Why?””
Emily looked at me.
“Because I was the reason.””
The room went silent.
Michael looked at her.
“What does that mean?””
Emily swallowed.
“Daniel and I had been close.””
I felt the familiar pain return.
“But you said it was before the divorce.””
“It was.””
“Were you together?””
She hesitated.
That hesitation was enough.
“Yes.””
Michael looked away.
I felt like I couldn’t breathe.
My sister.
My husband.
Together.
While I was pregnant.
While I was preparing for our child.
“I was lonely,” Emily whispered.
I laughed quietly.
Not because it was funny.
Because I couldn’t believe those words.
“Lonely?””
She cried.
“I know.””
“No, you don’t.””
My voice cracked.
“You don’t know what you did.””
Emily nodded.
“I do now.””
Michael stood.
“Then why help him?””
Emily wiped her face.
“Because when I realized what we had done, I wanted to fix it.””
“By stealing my life?””
“No.””
She shook her head.
“I thought I could give you a clean break.””
I stared at her.
“What does that mean?””
Emily looked at Michael.
“When Daniel found out there was a chance Ethan was your biological father, he panicked.””
Michael’s expression hardened.
“He wanted to hide it.””
“Yes.””
“And you helped him.””
Emily nodded.
“I thought if Sarah never knew, she would never get hurt.””
The silence afterward was painful.
Because it was such a terrible excuse.
And yet I believed she had convinced herself.
That was the worst part.
She wasn’t a villain in her own mind.
She was someone who made selfish choices and called them protection.
“What did you change?”” I asked.
Emily looked down.
“The hospital records.””
Michael stared.
“You did?””
“I worked in the hospital administration office at the time.””
I felt sick.
“You had access.””
“Yes.””
“And Daniel?””
“He asked me to help.””
My voice became quiet.
“You changed my son’s records.””
Emily cried.
“Yes.””
“Why?””
She looked at me.
“Because I thought if Daniel believed Michael was his, he would stay.””
I stared at her.
“Did he?””
Emily shook her head.
“No.””
A tear fell.
“He left anyway.””
That was the part nobody could escape.
All the lies.
All the damage.
All the betrayal.
And it still didn’t give anyone what they wanted.
Michael looked at Emily.
“Did you ever love me?””
Her face broke.
“More than anything.””
“Then why?””
She whispered:
“Because I loved you like I had a right to.””
The sentence hung there.
And finally, she understood.
She didn’t lose me because of what she did.
She lost me because she believed love gave her permission to control my life.
My phone buzzed.
A message from Dr. Reynolds.
*We found the final archived document.*
I opened it.
My heart stopped.
The document was dated the day Michael was born.
The title:
*Voluntary Acknowledgment Of Paternity.*
The signature at the bottom wasn’t Daniel’s.
It wasn’t Ethan’s.
It was mine.
Except I had never signed it.
I looked at Emily.
She went pale.
Because she knew exactly what it meant.
May you like
Someone had forged my name.
And the person who did it was still out there.
