Chapter 6: The Truth Chloe Buried

For eighteen years, I believed I knew my son’s story.

I knew the day he was born.

I knew the first time he held my finger.

I knew the sound of his laugh before he lost his baby teeth.

I knew every scar on his knees from learning to ride a bike.

I knew every dream he had.

But standing in my doorway, listening to Chloe say those words…

I realized I didn’t know everything.

And that terrified me.

“Get out.””

Chloe blinked.

“Sarah—”

“No.””

My voice was shaking.

“But you don’t get to walk into my house after what you did and ask for a conversation.””

Michael stepped beside me.

“Let her talk.””

I looked at him.

He looked exhausted.

But determined.

I opened the door wider.

“Five minutes.””

Chloe nodded.

She stepped inside.

She looked around the house.

The same house where Michael grew up.

The same walls covered with family pictures.

Her eyes stopped on one.

A photo from Michael’s eighth birthday.

Daniel was there.

I was there.

Michael was smiling between us.

Chloe looked away quickly.

“I never wanted this.””

Michael laughed softly.

“That’s interesting.””

She looked at him.

“I know what I did was wrong.””

“You mean the email?””

“Yes.””

“The seat?””

She looked down.

“Yes.””

“The lies?””

Her eyes filled.

“Yes.””

Michael crossed his arms.

“Then start there.””

Chloe sat down.

For the first time, I saw her without confidence.

Without control.

“I met Daniel when he was already unhappy.””

I interrupted.

“You met him while he was married.””

She nodded.

“I know.””

“Do you?””

She looked at me.

“I was selfish.””

That surprised me.

Because I expected excuses.

Not honesty.

“I thought he was leaving because your marriage was already over.””

“It wasn’t.””

“I know that now.””

Michael looked confused.

“Why are you telling us this?””

Chloe took a breath.

“Because I made a mistake that followed all of us.””

She reached into her bag.

She placed a folder on the table.

My heart sank.

“What is that?””

“The original paternity test.””

Michael went completely still.

“You have it?””

Chloe nodded.

“I found it years ago.””

“Where?””

“In Daniel’s old files.””

I stared at her.

“Why didn’t you tell us?””

She looked at me.

“Because I was afraid.””

“Afraid of what?””

Her voice cracked.

“Of losing him.””

I almost laughed.

“You destroyed a family because you were afraid of losing a man?””

Chloe looked down.

“Yes.””

The honesty was painful.

Michael opened the folder.

I wanted to stop him.

I wanted to protect him.

But I knew I couldn’t.

Not anymore.

He pulled out the paper.

His eyes scanned the page.

I watched his face change.

Confusion.

Shock.

Then something I couldn’t name.

“Mom.””

I stepped closer.

“What?””

He looked at the paper.

“The test says…”

He stopped.

I felt my heartbeat in my throat.

“What does it say?””

He looked at Chloe.

Then at me.

Then back at the paper.

“Dad is my biological father.””

The room went silent.

A strange wave of relief hit me.

Then disappeared.

Because if that was true…

Why had Chloe been hiding it?

Michael looked angry.

“Then why?””

Chloe wiped her eyes.

“Because the second page wasn’t about your father.””

She flipped the paper.

There was another document attached.

A medical report.

My hands went cold.

“What is that?””

Chloe whispered:

“The reason I knew the test results before Daniel did.””

Michael read the page.

Then his face changed.

“Mom…”

I took the paper.

At the top was a name.

Not mine.

Not Daniel’s.

A name I had never seen before.

But beneath it was a sentence that made my entire body freeze.

*Family medical history disclosure: donor information unavailable.*

I looked at Chloe.

“What is this?””

She couldn’t meet my eyes.

“The hospital made a mistake eighteen years ago.””

My breathing stopped.

“What mistake?””

She whispered:

“When Michael was born…”

A tear fell down her face.

“The hospital mixed two files.””

Michael stepped back.

“No.””

Chloe looked at him.

“I’m sorry.””

“No.””

His voice cracked.

“Just tell me.””

She took a deep breath.

And finally said the words that changed everything.

“The paternity test proved Daniel was your father.””

She looked at me.

“But the hospital records show something else.””

My hands tightened around the paper.

“What?””

Chloe whispered:

“Michael’s birth record may not belong to Michael.””

The room went silent.

Then my phone buzzed.

A message appeared.

From the hospital.

*“Mrs. Carter, we need you to come in immediately regarding your son’s original birth records.””*

I stared at the screen.

May you like

Because after eighteen years…

I was about to find out whether the child I raised had been the child I gave birth to.
