Chapter 5: The Name On The Hidden Document

I didn’t open the envelope at the coffee shop.

Not because I wasn’t curious.

Because I was terrified.

There’s a difference.

Curiosity makes you reach for the truth.

Fear makes you wonder if you can survive it.

I took the envelope home.

Michael sat across from me at the dining table.

Neither of us spoke.

The envelope rested between us.

A simple white envelope.

No label.

No explanation.

But somehow it felt heavier than anything I had ever held.

Finally, Michael said:

“Open it.””

I looked at him.

“You’re sure?””

“No.””

He swallowed.

“But I’m tired of not knowing.””

I opened it.

Inside was a stack of papers.

The first page was a hospital record.

I read the name.

Michael Carter.

My heart raced.

“What is this?””

Michael leaned closer.

I kept reading.

Then I saw the date.

The day after Michael was born.

And beneath it was a section I had never seen before.

*Paternity Testing Request.*

My hands began shaking.

“No.””

Michael looked confused.

“What?””

I turned the paper around.

His eyes moved across the page.

For several seconds, he said nothing.

Then:

“Dad thought I wasn’t his?””

The question broke me.

Because I knew that pain.

Not because it was true.

Because my son was hearing it.

I reached across the table.

“Michael, listen to me.””

He pulled away.

“No.””

His voice was quiet.

“Why didn’t I know?””

“Because I never knew about this.””

“You didn’t?””

I shook my head.

“No.””

He stood up.

“Everyone keeps saying they protected me.””

His eyes filled with tears.

“But nobody protected me from finding out this way.””

I wanted to argue.

I wanted to explain.

But the truth was standing right there.

A piece of paper.

A secret.

A question that had existed before Michael could even speak.

My phone rang.

Daniel.

I stared at the screen.

Michael saw the name.

“Answer.””

I hesitated.

“Michael—”

“Answer him.””

I picked up.

“What did you do?””

Daniel was silent.

“Sarah.””

“No. You don’t get to say my name like nothing happened.””

“I know.””

“Did you request a paternity test?””

Another silence.

That was enough.

Michael closed his eyes.

Daniel whispered:

“Yes.””

I felt like the room moved.

“Why?””

“Because Chloe told me things.””

“Chloe?””

“She said Emily and I had history. She said there were questions.””

I looked at the envelope.

“So you believed her?””

“I was confused.””

“You left your family because you were confused?””

“Sarah—”

“No.””

My voice cracked.

“You made me raise our son while you searched for a reason to doubt him.””

Daniel sounded ashamed.

“I regret it.””

“Regret doesn’t erase eighteen years.””

A long pause.

Then he said:

“There’s more.””

I froze.

“What more?””

“The test results.””

I looked at Michael.

He was watching me.

“What happened?””

Daniel exhaled.

“The results came back.””

My heart pounded.

“And?””

“I never told you because…”

“Because what?””

“Because Chloe destroyed them.””

The room went still.

Michael looked at me.

“What?””

Daniel continued.

“She said the results didn’t matter anymore.””

I gripped the phone.

“Why would she do that?””

Daniel’s voice became smaller.

“Because she already knew what they said.””

I felt cold.

“How?””

“Because she was the one who ordered the test.””

I stared at the wall.

That made no sense.

“Why would Chloe order a paternity test on my son?””

Daniel didn’t answer.

Then he said:

“Because Chloe knew something about Michael’s birth that neither of us knew.””

The call ended.

Michael sat back down slowly.

“What does that mean?””

I didn’t answer.

Because I didn’t know.

But one thing was becoming clear.

The woman who stole my son’s graduation seat wasn’t just trying to embarrass me.

She had been hiding something since before Michael could remember.

The next morning, there was a knock on my door.

I opened it.

Chloe was standing there.

No makeup.

No perfect smile.

No designer clothes.

Just fear.

“Sarah,” she said.

I didn’t move.

“What do you want?””

She looked past me.

At Michael.

Then back at me.

“I need to tell you the truth before Daniel does.””

My stomach tightened.

“What truth?””

May you like

Her eyes filled with tears.

“The truth about who Michael’s biological father is.””
