Chapter 14: The Truth Michael Deserved

The handwriting was mine.

That was what made it terrifying.

Not similar.

Not close.

Mine.

The same curve on the S.

The same way I crossed my T’s.

Someone had copied my signature perfectly.

Michael stared at the document.

“Mom.””

I couldn’t answer.

Because I was trying to understand how someone could steal your identity before you even knew it happened.

Emily sat quietly.

Too quietly.

“Emily.””

She looked up.

“Yes?””

“You know who signed this.””

Her face changed.

Not surprise.

Fear.

“Don’t lie to me again.””

She looked at Michael.

Then back at me.

“It was Daniel.””

My chest tightened.

“He forged my name?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

Emily swallowed.

“Because Ethan was trying to establish legal paternity.””

Michael looked at her.

“So Dad made sure he couldn’t.””

Emily nodded.

“He believed if the paperwork showed he was already recognized as my father…”

She stopped.

“Your father.””

Michael corrected.

She lowered her eyes.

“He thought Ethan would give up.””

I felt something inside me break.

Not because Daniel chose me.

Because he chose control.

He didn’t trust love.

He trusted paperwork.

He trusted lies.

He trusted fear.

A week later, Daniel came to my house.

For the first time since all this began, he didn’t come angry.

He didn’t come defensive.

He looked defeated.

Michael opened the door.

They stared at each other.

Then Michael stepped aside.

“Come in.””

Daniel looked surprised.

I was too.

They sat across from each other.

No one spoke.

Finally, Daniel said:

“I’m sorry.””

Michael looked at him.

“That’s all?””

Daniel nodded slowly.

“I don’t know what else to say.””

“You can tell the truth.””

Daniel closed his eyes.

“I was afraid.””

Michael laughed softly.

“Everyone says that.””

“I was.””

“Dad, do you know what hurts?””

Daniel looked at him.

“It’s not that Ethan existed.””

A pause.

“It’s not even that you lied.””

Daniel swallowed.

“It’s that you spent eighteen years deciding I couldn’t handle the truth.””

Those words destroyed him.

Because they were true.

Daniel looked at me.

“I thought I was protecting him.””

I shook my head.

“No.””

His eyes dropped.

“I know.””

Michael leaned forward.

“Why did you leave Mom?””

Daniel was silent.

Then:

“Because I knew Ethan would eventually come back.””

I felt my stomach twist.

“And you thought leaving first would protect you?””

“Yes.””

Michael stared.

“You destroyed our family because you were scared of losing me.””

Daniel nodded.

“Yes.””

A tear rolled down his face.

“And I lost you anyway.””

Nobody spoke.

Then Daniel reached into his pocket.

He placed something on the table.

A small envelope.

“What is that?””

He looked at Michael.

“Something I should have given you years ago.””

Michael opened it.

Inside was a letter.

From Daniel.

Written eighteen years earlier.

Michael read silently.

Then his hands began shaking.

“What?””

He looked up.

“You wrote this the day I was born?””

Daniel nodded.

“I wanted to give it to you when you were older.””

“Why didn’t you?””

Daniel looked ashamed.

“Because I became the person I was afraid of.””

Michael folded the letter.

For a moment, I thought he might walk away.

Instead, he said:

“I don’t know if I can forgive you.””

Daniel nodded.

“I understand.””

“But I want to know if you can stop lying.””

Daniel looked at him.

“Yes.””

The answer came immediately.

For once.

No hesitation.

No excuses.

“Yes.””

Later that night, Michael and I sat outside.

The same porch where I had watched him grow up.

“I met Ethan today.””

I smiled.

“You did?””

He nodded.

“He’s awkward.””

I laughed softly.

“Your father is too.””

“Which one?””

The question hurt.

But I knew what he meant.

I looked at him.

“You don’t have to choose.””

Michael looked at the sky.

“I know.””

A quiet moment passed.

Then he said:

“I think I spent my whole life trying to understand why Dad left.””

I listened.

“And now I realize I should have been asking why you stayed.””

My eyes filled.

He leaned against my shoulder.

“You stayed.””

“Yes.””

“Even when everyone else made leaving easier.””

I held his hand.

“Always.””

The next morning, Ethan called.

His voice sounded nervous.

“Sarah.””

“What happened?””

“I found something.””

My heart sank.

“What?””

“A letter from my mother.””

I frowned.

“Your mother?””

“Yes.””

“Why does that matter?””

Silence.

Then Ethan said:

“Because she knew about Michael.””

I sat up.

“What?””

“And she knew something about Daniel.””

My grip tightened around the phone.

“What did she know?””

Ethan whispered:

“She knew Daniel wasn’t the only person who lied.””

A pause.

“She knew the real reason he chose you.””

I looked toward Michael’s room.

The final piece of the puzzle was still missing.

May you like

And this time…

It was coming from someone who had been silent for eighteen years.
