Chapter 8: The Box Under the Bed

The courtroom felt like it was holding its breath.

Jason’s face remained on the screen.

His eyes looked exhausted.

Like he had been carrying a secret that became heavier every day.

The judge spoke.

“Mr. Miller, explain exactly what you mean.””

Jason swallowed.

“The box contains documents, recordings, and messages.””

The prosecutor stepped forward.

“Evidence of what?””

Jason looked at me.

Then at Sarah.

“Evidence that Sarah planned this entire thing.””

Sarah immediately stood.

“That’s a lie.””

The judge looked at her.

“Sit down.””

She slowly lowered herself.

But I saw her hands shaking.

David looked toward the screen.

“When did you receive the box?””

Jason hesitated.

“Five months ago.””

The timing hit me.

Five months.

That was one month after Sarah filed for emergency custody.

David continued.

“Who gave it to you?””

Jason looked uncomfortable.

“Sarah.””

The courtroom exploded.

I stared at him.

“She gave you the evidence?””

Jason nodded.

“She told me to keep it safe.””

“Why?””

Jason looked at Sarah.

“Because she thought if anything went wrong, she needed someone she could trust.””

Sarah’s face turned pale.

David stepped closer.

“Did she tell you what was inside?””

“At first, no.””

“What changed?””

Jason looked down.

“She called me two weeks later.””

“What did she say?””

Jason took a breath.

“She said Michael was getting too close to the truth.””

My chest tightened.

The judge leaned forward.

“Truth about what?””

Jason looked directly at the camera.

“The fact that she was creating evidence.””

A wave of whispers spread through the courtroom.

Sarah’s attorney stood.

“Objection. This is speculation.””

The judge shook his head.

“Overruled. Continue.””

Jason continued.

“Sarah had recordings of Michael. But they weren’t complete.””

David nodded.

“The edited recordings.””

“Yes.””

The prosecutor looked frustrated.

“Mr. Miller, you are asking this court to believe you over a mother fighting for her child.””

Jason looked at him.

“No.””

He paused.

“I’m asking the court to believe the evidence.””

The judge allowed Jason to continue.

“I saved copies of everything.””

Sarah’s head snapped up.

“What?””

The word came out before she could stop it.

Everyone heard.

Jason looked at her.

“You didn’t know?””

Sarah went silent.

David turned toward the judge.

“Your Honor, I request permission to review the contents immediately.””

The judge nodded.

“Granted.””

Jason opened a folder on his side.

“I can send everything electronically.””

Within minutes, attorneys gathered around their computers.

I sat there watching.

Waiting.

Terrified.

Because I had spent months wondering if anyone would ever believe me.

Now the truth was sitting somewhere inside a file.

A file that could save me.

Or reveal something worse.

David suddenly stopped scrolling.

His expression changed.

I knew that look.

“What is it?”” I whispered.

He didn’t answer.

He looked toward the judge.

“Your Honor, I need to present this.””

The judge nodded.

David stood.

“The first item is a message exchange between Sarah and another person.””

Sarah’s face changed.

“No.””

Nobody looked at her.

David continued.

“The messages discuss creating a false narrative about Mr. Carter’s behavior.””

The prosecutor stepped closer.

“Who is the other person?””

David looked at Sarah.

Then at Daniel.

Then back at the judge.

“It appears to be Daniel Carter.””

The courtroom went silent again.

My brother looked sick.

Sarah looked furious.

“You promised me!””

The words escaped her mouth.

Everyone froze.

Daniel turned toward her.

“I promised to help you.””

Sarah realized what she had said.

Too late.

David walked slowly toward the evidence table.

“Your Honor, I believe we are beyond a custody dispute.””

He held up another document.

“This appears to show a coordinated attempt to manipulate a legal proceeding.””

The judge looked serious.

“Mr. Wilson, are you suggesting fraud?””

“Yes.””

The word landed heavily.

Sarah’s attorney whispered something to her.

She ignored him.

Instead, she stared at me.

And I saw something I had never seen before.

Not confidence.

Not anger.

Panic.

But then Sarah smiled.

A strange, almost calm smile.

Like she remembered something.

Like she still had one final card.

She leaned toward her attorney and whispered.

Her attorney looked shocked.

Then he stood.

“Your Honor, before the court continues, my client has additional evidence regarding Mr. Carter.””

David frowned.

“More evidence?””

Sarah’s attorney nodded.

“Yes.””

The judge sighed.

“Proceed.””

The attorney placed a photograph on the table.

“I believe this changes the entire situation.””

David picked it up.

His expression shifted.

I watched his eyes move across the image.

Then he looked at me.

Not with anger.

With confusion.

“Michael…”

My stomach tightened.

“What?””

He slowly turned the photograph around.

It showed me.

Standing outside a house.

A house I recognized.

But I hadn’t been there in years.

The attorney spoke.

“This photo was taken three days before Sarah filed for custody.””

I stared at the image.

Because I knew something nobody else in that room knew.

The picture was impossible.

“I wasn’t there,” I whispered.

May you like

Sarah smiled.

“Then explain how the camera saw you.””
