Chapter 7: The Friend Who Held the Truth
For a moment, nobody moved.
Not the judge.
Not the attorneys.
Not even Sarah.
The name hung in the courtroom like a warning.
Jason.
My oldest friend.
The man who had stood beside me at my wedding.
The man who had carried Emily around on his shoulders when she was a toddler.
The man who told me, “Michael, family is the people who stay when everything falls apart.””
Now his name was connected to the one thing that could prove whether I was innocent or guilty.
David looked at Sarah.
“Mrs. Carter, are you saying Jason has the original evidence?””
Sarah’s lips pressed together.
“I don’t know.””
The judge narrowed his eyes.
“You just named him.””
“He might have it.””
“Might?””
Sarah looked frustrated.
Like she was trying to calculate what information she could reveal without hurting herself.
That was the first time I realized something.
Sarah wasn’t in control anymore.
The story she created had started collapsing faster than she could repair it.
David stepped closer.
“Your Honor, we need to locate this evidence immediately.””
The prosecutor stood.
“Before we make assumptions, we should hear from Mr. Carter.””
The judge nodded.
“Bring him forward.””
Daniel walked back to the witness chair.
He looked smaller now.
Not like the confident man who had walked in wearing a suit.
Like someone who had finally realized the damage he caused.
David approached him.
“Daniel, explain your involvement.””
Daniel rubbed his hands together.
“I made a mistake.””
“That is not an explanation.””
Daniel looked at me.
“I thought I was helping her.””
My jaw tightened.
“Helping her destroy me?””
He flinched.
“No.””
“Then what exactly did you think was happening?””
Daniel looked down.
“Sarah told me you were dangerous.””
A bitter laugh escaped my mouth.
“You believed that?””
He didn’t answer.
That hurt more than anything.
Because even if Sarah had fooled him, he still chose to believe the worst about me.
David placed a document in front of him.
“Did you help Sarah collect information about your brother?””
Daniel nodded slowly.
“Yes.””
“Did you provide her with private conversations?””
Another pause.
“Yes.””
The courtroom murmured.
I felt like I was watching my own life being taken apart piece by piece.
David continued.
“Did you help create the impression that Michael was unstable?””
Daniel closed his eyes.
“I didn’t know she would use it like this.””
David’s voice hardened.
“You helped build the weapon. You are surprised she used it?””
Daniel had no answer.
The judge leaned forward.
“Mr. Carter, where is the box now?””
Daniel looked toward Sarah.
She shook her head.
A silent warning.
But Daniel finally looked away from her.
“I don’t know.””
David stared.
“Try again.””
“I really don’t know.””
The judge sighed.
“Then we need to find Mr. Jason Miller.””
My heart dropped.
Because Jason wasn’t just a name.
He was someone I trusted.
Someone I called when Emily was born.
Someone who knew every chapter of my marriage.
The hearing was paused while attorneys discussed the next steps.
During the break, David pulled me aside.
“Do you know where Jason might be?””
I shook my head.
“Not lately.””
“When was the last time you spoke?””
I thought back.
Three weeks before my arrest.
Jason had called me.
He sounded nervous.
He asked strange questions.
“Are you still fighting Sarah?””
“Are you sure you know everything about her?””
At the time, I thought he was trying to help.
Now I wondered if he was trying to warn me.
“I need to talk to him,” I said.
David nodded.
“Maybe. But be careful.””
“Why?””
“Because if Jason has that evidence, someone has been protecting it.””
I looked toward Sarah.
She was sitting alone now.
No confidence.
No smile.
Just staring at her phone.
Then it happened.
Her phone lit up.
She looked at the screen.
Her face changed.
David noticed too.
“Who is it?””
Sarah locked the phone.
“Nobody.””
David smiled.
“Interesting.””
The judge returned.
“Before we continue, the court has received information that Mr. Jason Miller has been contacted.””
Everyone looked surprised.
I looked at Sarah.
Because she knew before anyone else.
The judge continued.
“He will appear by video conference within the hour.””
My heart started racing.
Jason knew the truth.
Whatever was in that box.
Whatever Sarah had hidden.
Whatever my brother helped cover up.
Jason had it.
An hour later, the courtroom screen turned on.
A man appeared.
Older than I remembered.
Tired.
Scared.
“Jason Miller,” the judge said.
“Do you understand you are under oath?””
“Yes.””
The prosecutor approached.
“Mr. Miller, do you possess a box belonging to Sarah Carter?””
Jason looked down.
A long silence followed.
Then he said:
“Yes.””
The courtroom erupted.
Sarah closed her eyes.
David leaned forward.
“What is inside that box?””
Jason looked directly at the camera.
May you like
And his next words changed everything.
“Everything Sarah did to destroy Michael.””
