Chapter 14: The Last Lie Falls
Nobody breathed.
Ryan Mitchell.
The man Sarah claimed was part of her past.
The man connected to my old conviction.
The man she had hidden from everyone.
The same man who was supposed to be gone.
David looked stunned.
“Ryan was the beneficiary?””
The prosecutor nodded.
“Yes.””
I stared at Sarah.
Everything suddenly connected.
The custody battle.
The fake evidence.
The edited recordings.
The attempt to make me look dangerous.
It wasn’t about taking Emily.
It was about removing me.
Permanently.
Sarah looked around the courtroom.
For once, she had no performance left.
No tears.
No carefully chosen words.
Just a person watching her plan collapse.
The judge spoke.
“Mrs. Carter, do you have an explanation?””
She looked at her attorney.
He didn’t speak.
Because there was nothing left to defend.
Sarah finally whispered:
“He was supposed to help me.””
The courtroom froze.
David immediately stood.
“Help you do what?””
Sarah realized what she had said.
Too late.
She looked away.
The judge’s voice became firm.
“Answer the question.””
Sarah closed her eyes.
Then she said:
“Get Michael out of the way.””
The words felt heavier than any accusation she had ever made against me.
Because this time…
They were the truth.
Emily started crying.
I turned immediately.
“Sweetheart.””
She ran toward me.
The judge allowed it.
I held her.
Her little arms wrapped around my neck.
“Daddy, are we going home?””
I closed my eyes.
“Yes.””
The word came out broken.
“Yes, we’re going home.””
Behind me, Sarah heard.
And something changed.
She looked at Emily.
Not with love.
With desperation.
“Emily.””
My daughter held tighter.
Sarah stood.
“I’m your mother.””
Emily slowly looked at her.
“I know.””
“Then don’t let him take you away.””
The courtroom became silent.
Because even then…
Even after everything…
Sarah was still making it about herself.
Emily looked confused.
Then she said something that broke everyone.
“Mommy…”
She wiped her tears.
“Why did you make Daddy sad?””
Sarah froze.
A five-year-old question.
Simple.
Honest.
Impossible to answer.
Sarah opened her mouth.
Nothing came out.
David approached the judge.
“Your Honor, given the evidence presented today, we request emergency protective custody for Mr. Carter.””
The judge nodded.
“I am granting that request.””
The words hit me.
After months of fighting.
After months of being treated like a threat.
I finally heard someone say I could protect my own child.
The judge continued.
“This court also refers the evidence presented today for criminal investigation.””
Sarah’s attorney leaned toward her.
She barely heard him.
She was staring at me.
At Emily.
At the life she had tried to destroy.
Then she laughed.
Quietly.
Everyone looked.
Sarah shook her head.
“You think this is over?””
The judge looked at her.
“Mrs. Carter.””
But she continued.
“You all think I was the mastermind.””
David frowned.
“What does that mean?””
Sarah smiled.
A small, bitter smile.
“Ask who gave me the idea.””
The room went quiet.
My heart sank.
Because there was one person who had not spoken.
One person who had been in the background through everything.
The prosecutor looked at the evidence.
Then suddenly picked up another file.
“Your Honor.””
The judge looked over.
“What is it?””
The prosecutor’s expression changed.
“We found another message.””
“From whom?””
He looked at the page.
Then slowly said:
“From someone inside the court system.””
Everyone froze.
David looked at me.
I felt cold.
Because Sarah wasn’t looking scared anymore.
May you like
She was looking relieved.
Like this was the moment she had been waiting for.
