Chapter 6: The Message That Was Never Meant to Be Seen

The courtroom was chaos.

The judge demanded order.

Attorneys whispered urgently.

Sarah’s face was no longer the face of a grieving mother.

It was the face of someone caught in a trap.

But Daniel looked worse.

He looked ashamed.

I had spent months defending him.

I had told everyone he was the only person who believed me.

And now he stood there beside the woman who had tried to erase me from my daughter’s life.

David returned to his table.

He leaned close.

“Michael, are you okay?””

I laughed quietly.

It wasn’t because anything was funny.

“I don’t know anymore.””

He looked at me.

“That’s fair.””

The judge finally restored silence.

“Mr. Wilson, do you have evidence regarding this relationship?””

David stood.

“Yes, Your Honor.””

He opened a folder.

“Messages between Mrs. Carter and Mr. Carter.””

Daniel looked confused.

“Those are private.””

David turned toward him.

“Then why were they used to plan a false case against my client?””

Daniel said nothing.

The prosecutor looked uncomfortable.

“Your Honor, we need time to review.””

The judge nodded.

“You will have it.””

Then he looked at David.

“Present what you can summarize.””

David held up his phone.

“These messages show coordination.””

Sarah shook her head.

“No.””

David continued.

“Mrs. Carter discussed creating evidence. She discussed convincing witnesses.

And she discussed removing Mr. Carter from his daughter’s life permanently.””

Sarah stood.

“That’s a lie!””

The judge looked at her.

“Sit down.””

She did.

But she kept staring at me.

Not with fear anymore.

With hatred.

David turned the phone around.

“Your Honor, one message in particular is important.””

He read:

“Once Michael is labeled dangerous, nobody will believe him.””

A murmur moved through the courtroom.

Then he read another.

“Daniel, make sure he has no one left.””

My stomach dropped.

I looked at my brother.

“Did you write that?””

Daniel looked away.

That was answer enough.

The judge leaned forward.

“Mr. Carter.””

Daniel finally spoke.

“I didn’t mean for it to go this far.””

My chest tightened.

“You knew?””

He looked at me.

“I thought Sarah just wanted custody.””

I stared at him.

“She told you she was lying about me?””

Silence.

“Daniel.””

His eyes filled with guilt.

“Yes.””

The word destroyed something in me.

The judge asked:

“When did you become involved?””

Daniel looked toward Sarah.

She shook her head slightly.

A warning.

But Daniel was already breaking.

“Before she filed.””

Sarah whispered:

“Don’t.””

He continued.

“She said Michael would ruin everything.””

I felt numb.

Not angry.

Not even surprised.

Just empty.

Then Emily spoke.

“Uncle Daniel?””

Everyone turned.

She was standing beside the courtroom bench.

The judge looked concerned.

“Emily, sweetheart, stay with your mother.””

But Emily looked at Daniel.

“Why did you tell Mommy to hide the box?””

Daniel froze.

David turned immediately.

“What box?””

Emily hugged her rabbit.

“The box under Mommy’s bed.””

Sarah stood so fast her chair moved.

“Emily, stop talking.””

The judge’s voice became firm.

“Mrs. Carter, sit down.””

Emily looked at me.

“I saw Uncle Daniel put papers inside.””

David’s eyes widened.

“What papers?””

Emily whispered:

“The ones with Daddy’s name.””

The courtroom became silent.

David slowly turned toward Daniel.

“Mr. Carter…”

Daniel looked terrified.

“What did you put in that box?””

He didn’t answer.

The judge stared.

“Answer the question.””

Daniel swallowed.

Then he said:

“The original evidence.””

Everyone froze.

David stepped forward.

“Original evidence?””

Daniel nodded.

“The evidence Sarah replaced.””

I felt my heartbeat in my ears.

Because suddenly the entire case changed.

The recordings.

The accusations.

The documents.

Everything.

David looked at Sarah.

“Where is that box now?””

Sarah’s face went completely white.

Then she whispered something I almost didn’t hear.

“It’s gone.””

David stared.

“Who has it?””

Sarah looked toward the courtroom doors.

And said a name.

May you like

A name nobody expected.

“Michael’s old friend, Jason.””
