Chapter 11: The Secret Hidden in the Laptop
The judge ordered the courtroom cleared for a short recess.
But nobody left.
Everyone wanted answers.
Especially me.
I sat with Emily beside me while David examined the evidence.
My daughter’s head rested against my shoulder.
She was exhausted.
So was I.
But for the first time, I felt something I hadn’t felt in months.
Hope.
Then David approached.
“We found something.””
I looked up.
“What?””
He glanced at Emily.
“Can we speak privately?””
I nodded.
An officer stayed with Emily while David and I moved a few feet away.
He held the laptop.
“Sarah’s laptop.””
My stomach tightened.
“What did you find?””
“Emails.””
“To who?””
David hesitated.
“That’s the problem.””
He opened the laptop.
On the screen was an email chain.
The sender was Sarah.
The recipient was unknown.
A hidden address.
The messages were encrypted.
“But we recovered enough.””
He scrolled.
I read the first line.
*Phase one complete.*
My hands went cold.
“What is phase one?””
David continued.
“Removing you from Emily’s life.””
He clicked another message.
*Phase two begins after conviction.*
I stared.
Conviction.
Not custody.
Conviction.
David looked at me.
“She wasn’t trying to win custody.””
“No.””
My voice was barely audible.
“She was trying to destroy me.””
He nodded.
Another message appeared.
*Once Michael is gone, the remaining assets can be transferred.*
I frowned.
“Assets?””
David scrolled further.
Then he stopped.
His face changed.
“What?””
He turned the laptop.
I read.
And my entire body went numb.
The messages weren’t only about me.
They were about money.
Insurance.
Property.
A life insurance policy.
With my name on it.
I stepped back.
“No.””
David looked serious.
“Michael…”
“She wanted me dead?””
The words sounded impossible.
But the evidence was sitting in front of me.
The courtroom suddenly felt colder.
David closed the laptop.
“We need to be careful.””
I looked through the glass window toward Sarah.
She was sitting alone.
No emotion.
No fear.
Like someone who knew the worst thing she did had not yet been discovered.
Then Daniel approached.
I turned away.
“Don’t.””
He stopped.
“Michael.””
“No.””
My voice was sharper than I intended.
“You don’t get to apologize and make this disappear.””
Daniel looked down.
“I know.””
“Do you?””
He swallowed.
“I was scared.””
I laughed bitterly.
“Emily was scared.””
That hit him.
“She was five years old, Daniel.””
“I know.””
“No, you don’t.””
I pointed toward my daughter.
“She thought she had to protect me.””
Daniel looked at Emily.
His eyes filled with tears.
“I’m sorry.””
I wanted to hate him.
Maybe part of me did.
But another part remembered my little brother.
The kid who followed me everywhere.
The kid who cried when I left for college.
The kid who called me his hero.
“What happened to you?””
I asked.
Daniel wiped his face.
“Sarah knew how to make me feel guilty.””
“How?””
“She told me things.””
“What things?””
He looked toward Sarah.
“She told me you were going to take Emily away.””
I shook my head.
“She made you afraid.””
Daniel nodded.
“Yes.””
Before I could answer, the courtroom doors opened.
An investigator entered.
He walked directly toward the judge.
“Your Honor.””
Everyone looked.
“We found something else inside the storage unit.””
David stood.
“What?””
The investigator held up a small envelope.
“It was hidden underneath the bottom panel.””
Sarah’s face changed.
The investigator continued:
“Inside was a handwritten confession.””
The room went silent.
“Whose confession?”” the judge asked.
The investigator looked toward Sarah.
“Mrs. Carter’s.””
Sarah suddenly stood.
“That’s impossible.””
The judge stared.
“Why?””
She froze.
Because she had answered too quickly.
David walked toward the investigator.
“May we see it?””
The envelope was opened.
Inside was one page.
David read the first line.
Then he stopped.
“Your Honor…”
The judge looked concerned.
“What does it say?””
David slowly looked at Sarah.
“It says Sarah Carter planned everything.””
A wave of whispers spread.
Then he read the next sentence.
And his expression changed completely.
Because the confession did not begin with Sarah.
May you like
It began with another name.
A name nobody expected.
