Chapter 7: The Birth Certificate That Shouldn't Exist

For several seconds, nobody spoke.

I stared at the birth certificate on the table, reading the name beneath the father's signature again and again.

*Nora Mercer.*

My daughter was sitting in the next room, drawing a picture of our family, completely unaware that a piece of paper had just turned her entire life upside down.

I looked at Rachel.

“Tell me this is a mistake.””

She covered her mouth.

“I don't know what it means, Ethan.””

“You just told me Michael Mercer died six years ago. Now there's a birth certificate saying he's Nora's father?””

Detective Harris raised one hand.

“Mr. Callahan, this document may be fraudulent. We haven't verified its origin.””

I pushed the paper away.

“Then why does it have my daughter's date of birth?””

The detective didn't answer immediately.

That silence frightened me more than anything he could have said.

Ryan entered from the adjoining room, his phone in his hand.

“Nora wants to know why everyone keeps whispering.””

I looked toward the doorway.

“Tell her we're discussing grown-up problems.””

Ryan studied my face.

“Ethan, what happened?””

I handed him the certificate.

He read it, then looked at me with disbelief.

“This is insane. You've raised Nora since she was born. Rachel was there.

You were there. How could some stranger be listed as her father?””

Rachel stood abruptly.

“Because I signed something I shouldn't have signed.””

Every head turned toward her.

I felt the blood drain from my face.

“What did you sign?””

Rachel gripped the back of the chair.

“After the accident, I woke up in a hospital under a different name. I was badly injured. I couldn't walk without assistance, and I was terrified that the people who had threatened me would find Nora.””

She swallowed.

“A woman came to see me. She said she worked for a private medical organization that helped people escaping dangerous situations. She offered to arrange new documents for me and Nora.””

Detective Harris took out his notebook.

“Do you remember her name?””

“Margaret. I think her surname was Ellis.””

“And you trusted her?””

“I was desperate.””

Rachel looked at me.

“She told me Nora's records had been compromised. She said that if I wanted to protect my daughter, I needed to sign temporary guardianship documents.””

My hands curled into fists.

“What did those documents say?””

“I thought they were forms allowing Nora to stay with a family while I recovered. I was told she would be safe, that no one would know where she was.””

“And you signed them without telling me?””

Rachel flinched.

“I thought you were being watched. I believed contacting you would put you in danger.””

“You let me bury you.””

Tears streamed down her face.

“I know.””

“You let our daughter grow up believing her mother was dead!””

“I know, Ethan!””

Her voice cracked through the room.

Then she lowered her head.

“I have lived with that every day.””

I wanted to shout. I wanted to demand six years of answers in six minutes. But when I looked at her trembling hands, I saw a woman who had been frightened into making terrible choices.

It didn't excuse what she'd done.

But it made the truth more complicated than the anger I wanted to feel.

Detective Harris placed the birth certificate inside a clear evidence sleeve.

“Mrs. Callahan, did you ever meet Michael Mercer?””

Rachel shook her head.

“No. I only heard the name Daniel Mercer mention once. He said his brother had died before Nora was born.””

The detective frowned.

“According to this document, Michael was alive when Nora was conceived.””

I looked up sharply.

“Then the document is wrong. Rachel and I were married. Nora is my daughter.””

“I'm not suggesting otherwise,” Harris said.

“I'm telling you we need to establish why someone created this record.””

Ryan paced beside the window.

“Could Vanessa have forged it?””

“Possibly,” the detective replied.

“But we found another document in her bag. It's a transfer agreement connected to the same identity.””

He pulled out a second page.

The agreement concerned a substantial trust fund established by my father. One paragraph referred to a beneficiary whose identity would be confirmed through a family relationship.

At the bottom was a handwritten note.

The child must remain under Ethan's care until the marriage is complete.

I read it twice.

“Why would they want Nora under my care?””

Rachel's face changed.

“Because of the trust.””

Detective Harris nodded slowly.

“Your father's estate may contain provisions we haven't seen. If someone believes Nora's legal identity affects the inheritance, that could explain why they wanted her close to you.””

“Then why threaten her?””

“Because she may know something they don't want revealed.””

My stomach tightened.

Nora had discovered Vanessa's fake pregnancy. She had recorded conversations that adults thought she was too young to understand.

But perhaps there was something else.

I went into the adjoining room and sat beside my daughter.

She immediately put down her crayons.

“Daddy, am I in trouble?””

I pulled her onto my lap.

“No, sweetheart. Never for asking questions.””

She studied my face.

“Is Mommy going to leave again?””

I glanced toward Rachel, who stood in the doorway.

“I don't know what happens next,” I admitted.

“But nobody is going to make you keep secrets from me anymore.””

Nora nodded slowly.

Then she reached into the pocket of her dress.

“I have something else.””

She handed me a tiny folded piece of paper.

“Vanessa gave this to me last week. She said I should hide it somewhere safe.””

I unfolded it.

There was a series of numbers written in blue ink, followed by a single sentence.

*Ask your father what happened on October 14, 1998.*

My blood ran cold.

October 14, 1998.

The date my father had officially signed the final version of his will.

I turned toward Detective Harris.

He took the paper carefully.

“Where did Vanessa get this?””

Nora shook her head.

“She said someone would come to our house and ask for it. She told me not to give it to anyone except you.””

“Did she tell you who would come?””

Nora looked toward the hallway.

“The man in the videos.””

Before I could ask anything else, Detective Harris's phone rang again.

He answered, listened, and then looked directly at me.

“Mr. Callahan, we've found the woman who helped Rachel after the accident.””

“Margaret Ellis?””

“Yes.””

He paused.

“She wants to speak to you. But there's a problem.””

“What problem?””

The detective lowered his voice.

“She says Vanessa wasn't working for Daniel Mercer.””

May you like

He looked at Rachel.

“She says Vanessa was working for your father.””
