Chapter 1: The Baby Who Never Existed

“Daddy, if I don’t do this now, you might lose Mommy forever.””

My eight-year-old daughter whispered those words seconds before she drove a silver pin into my pregnant bride’s stomach in front of 150 wedding guests.

Then the belly collapsed.

The screams that followed would haunt me for the rest of my life.

I was standing beneath a white floral arch inside a chapel in Columbus, Ohio, wearing a black tuxedo and holding the hands of Vanessa Cole, the woman I had loved for two years.

She wore a beautiful ivory wedding gown, a diamond necklace I had bought her the previous Christmas, and the rounded belly I had spent five months believing contained our child.

Our baby.

I had painted a nursery pale yellow. I had assembled a crib with instructions I could barely understand. I had even started reading bedtime stories aloud to Vanessa’s stomach, feeling ridiculous until she laughed and told me our little one could hear me.

After losing my first wife, Rachel, six years earlier, I had never imagined I would get another chance at happiness.

Then Vanessa walked into my life.

She was warm, patient, and wonderfully attentive to my daughter, Nora. She remembered Nora’s favorite pancakes, braided her hair before school, and tucked little notes into her lunchbox.

At least, that was what I believed.

“Nervous?”” Vanessa whispered, squeezing my fingers.

“A little,” I admitted.

She smiled.

“You have nothing to worry about, Ethan. Today is the beginning of our family.””

Behind her, Nora stood beside my brother, Ryan.

She wore a pale blue flower-girl dress and white shoes with tiny bows. But she hadn't smiled once that morning.

I had noticed her silence while we were getting ready.

“Nora, sweetheart, what's wrong?”” I had asked in the hotel room.

“Nothing, Daddy.””

“Are you worried about the wedding?””

She shook her head.

“Do you like Vanessa?””

Nora looked toward the bathroom, where Vanessa was applying lipstick.

“I don't know anymore.””

Before I could ask what she meant, Vanessa appeared.

“She's just tired,” Vanessa said, smoothing Nora's hair.

“Little girls sometimes struggle when their fathers fall in love again.””

She made it sound so reasonable that I felt guilty for questioning her.

Now, standing at the altar, I watched Nora slip away from Ryan.

She approached us with something small and metallic hidden inside her fist.

Vanessa's smile vanished.

“Nora?”” she said sharply.

“What are you doing?””

My daughter looked directly at me.

“Daddy, please trust me.””

Then I saw the pin.

“Nora, sweetheart, put that down,” I said, stepping toward her.

Vanessa suddenly grabbed my arm.

“ETHAN! STOP HER!””

Her voice was so frantic that several guests turned in their seats.

Nora moved before I could reach her.

She pressed the pin against Vanessa's stomach.

*POP.*

The sound was startlingly loud in the silent chapel.

A strange hiss followed.

Vanessa staggered backward, clutching her dress as the rounded belly beneath it began to shrink. The fabric folded inward. The shape I had watched grow for months collapsed until there was nothing beneath the gown but a flat stomach and a strange bundle of deflated material.

For three seconds, nobody moved.

Then a woman in the front row screamed.

Someone dropped a champagne glass. My aunt covered her mouth. A guest near the aisle began whispering a prayer.

I stared at Vanessa.

Under her wedding dress, something resembling a deflated inflatable cushion slipped toward the floor.

My mouth went dry.

“No,” I whispered.

Vanessa grabbed the front of her gown.

“Ethan, please. Let me explain.””

I stepped away from her.

“Where's the baby?””

She began crying immediately.

“Our baby,” I repeated, my voice breaking.

“Where is our baby, Vanessa?””

She reached for my hand.

“Please, you have to listen to me.””

“Five months!”” I shouted.

“Five months of doctor appointments, baby names, nursery furniture, and you telling me our child was kicking!””

“I can explain everything!””

“Then explain where my child is!””

She opened her mouth.

Nothing came out.

Nora grabbed my hand with both of hers.

“Daddy, she was never pregnant.””

I looked down at my daughter.

Her face was wet with tears, but her voice was steady.

“She told me not to tell you.””

Vanessa lunged toward her.

“Stop lying!””

My brother Ryan caught Vanessa by the wrist.

“Don't you dare touch my niece.””

Vanessa jerked free, knocking a flower arrangement from the altar.

“You don't understand what she's done!””

“No,” I said, looking at the collapsed belly on the chapel floor.

“I think we're finally beginning to understand what you've done.””

Nora reached into the pocket of her flower-girl dress and pulled out a phone.

“Daddy, I recorded something last night.””

On the screen, Vanessa sat at our kitchen island beside a man I had never seen before.

She was laughing.

Then she said six words that made the blood drain from my face.

“Once Ethan marries me, everything goes according to plan.””

And the man beside her replied with a question about my daughter.
