Chapter 2: The Secret in My Kitchen

For several seconds, I couldn't make myself press play again.

The chapel had become a room full of strangers pretending not to stare. My wedding guests whispered behind their hands. Vanessa's mother sat rigidly in the front row, clutching her handbag as though it were the only solid thing left in the world.

My daughter stood beside me, holding the phone with trembling fingers.

“Where did you get this?”” I asked.

“Your phone was charging in the kitchen,” Nora replied.

“I used mine to record the video on the other phone.””

“Why were you awake last night?””

“Because Vanessa was talking loudly.””

Vanessa stepped forward.

“She stole my privacy! She's eight years old, Ethan. She doesn't understand what she's recording!””

Nora flinched.

I immediately moved between them.

“Stay away from her.””

Vanessa's eyes widened.

“Are you seriously taking her side over mine?””

I looked at the woman I had planned to marry less than five minutes earlier.

“I don't know whose side I'm on yet,” I said.

“But I know what I just saw.””

Ryan led us toward a small room beside the chapel entrance. He shut the door and stood in front of it while I sat Nora on a velvet chair.

“Let's watch it,” I told her gently.

She nodded and pressed play.

The video was shaky, filmed from behind the kitchen counter. Vanessa sat with a tall man wearing a charcoal coat. His dark hair was combed neatly backward, and a silver watch glinted on his wrist.

He placed a folder on the counter.

“Everything is ready,” he said.

“The wedding is the final step.””

Vanessa poured herself a glass of water.

“Once Ethan marries me, everything goes according to plan.””

The man tapped the folder.

“And the little girl?””

Vanessa shrugged.

“I already warned her what would happen if she told him.””

My stomach tightened.

The man leaned back.

“You're certain she won't talk?””

Vanessa laughed.

“She's eight. She believes everything adults tell her.””

Nora stopped the video.

Her shoulders had begun to shake.

I crouched in front of her.

“Sweetheart, what did Vanessa tell you?””

Nora stared at the carpet.

“She said you would die if I told anyone.””

The room went silent.

“What?””

“She said the man in the video had people who could hurt you. She said if I told you about the belly, or the man, or anything else, you would have an accident like Mommy.””

For a moment, I forgot how to breathe.

Rachel had died in a car accident six years earlier. A police officer had come to my door that night. He told me the vehicle had left the road during heavy rain, and Rachel had died before reaching the hospital.

I had spent years grieving the woman who had once filled our house with music.

Vanessa had helped me through the worst of that grief.

Now she was using Rachel's death to frighten my child.

I pulled Nora into my arms.

“Listen to me,” I whispered against her hair.

“Nothing you tell me will make me love you less. Nothing. And you are never responsible for keeping me safe from the choices other people make.””

She clung to my tuxedo.

“I tried to tell you, Daddy.””

“I know, sweetheart.””

“You kept saying Vanessa was nice.””

The words hurt more than any accusation could have.

Because she was right.

I had been so desperate to rebuild our family that I had mistaken my own hope for proof.

Behind us, Vanessa began pounding on the door.

“Ethan! Open this door!””

Ryan didn't move.

“Not until you explain why you threatened a child.””

“I never threatened her!””

Nora lifted her head.

“You said the man would make Daddy disappear.””

Vanessa went quiet.

I stood and opened the door myself.

“Who is he?””

She looked at me, then at Nora.

“He's nobody.””

“Then why is he arranging something for our wedding?””

“He was helping me with a personal matter.””

“What personal matter requires you to fake a pregnancy?””

Her expression changed. The tears stopped as suddenly as a faucet being turned off.

“You wouldn't understand.””

“Try me.””

She folded her arms.

“You've been obsessed with having another child since Rachel died. I gave you something to believe in.””

I stared at her.

“You pretended to carry my baby because you thought I wanted one?””

“You wanted a family,” she snapped.

“I gave you one.””

“With a fake stomach?””

“You were happy!””

The cruelty of that answer stole the words from my mouth.

Vanessa pointed at Nora.

“And she ruined everything because she couldn't accept that you loved me.””

Ryan took a step forward.

“Get away from the little girl.””

Vanessa ignored him.

“Ethan, think about what you're doing. We've spent two years together. You're throwing all of that away because of a stupid video made by a child.””

“No,” I said quietly.

“I'm questioning it because of your own words.””

I took the phone and replayed the recording.

This time, I noticed something behind the man.

A framed photograph sat on the kitchen shelf. It showed the same man standing beside Vanessa outside a building with a blue sign.

I paused the video and zoomed in.

The sign was partially obscured, but I could make out two words.

*Mercer Legal.*

Ryan leaned over my shoulder.

“Mercer? Is that a law firm?””

“I don't know.””

Vanessa's face went pale.

For the first time since the belly collapsed, she looked genuinely frightened.

“Give me the phone,” she said.

I stepped back.

“Why?””

“Because you don't know what you're looking at!””

“Then tell me.””

She stared at the frozen image.

Her lips parted, but no sound came out.

I had seen that expression once before, years ago, when the police officer told me Rachel's car had been found.

It was the face of someone who had just realized that the past was no longer safely buried.

Then Nora touched my sleeve.

“Daddy?””

I turned toward her.

She was staring at the second video on her phone.

“There's another one,” she whispered.

“This is the one I was really scared to show you.””

She pressed play.

The scene showed Vanessa standing outside a bank with the same man. He handed her a thick envelope and a document folder.

Vanessa looked around before accepting them.

Then she laughed and said, “Ethan still thinks his first wife died in that accident. He has absolutely no idea.””

My knees nearly gave way.

I grabbed the edge of the table.

“What does Rachel have to do with this?””

Vanessa suddenly rushed toward the phone.

Ryan blocked her path.

But Nora had already paused the video on the man's face.

“Daddy,” she whispered, “he came to our house yesterday.””

I stared at the stranger's frozen expression.

“Why?””

May you like

Nora looked toward the chapel doors.

“Because he told Vanessa that Mommy is still alive.””
