Chapter 14: The Daughter Nobody Was Looking For

The emergency lights flickered on thirty seconds later.

Detective Harris drew his weapon and ordered everyone to remain where they were. Ryan pulled Nora behind the sofa while Rachel gripped her cane with both hands.

The hotel door stood open.

A woman in a dark coat was walking away down the corridor.

“Police! Stop!””

She ran.

Two officers chased her while Harris stayed with us. I rushed to the doorway, my heart pounding.

The woman disappeared around the corner.

Then I saw something on the carpet.

A small photograph.

I picked it up.

It showed a young woman standing outside a grocery store, holding a paper bag and smiling at someone beyond the camera.

On the back was a name.

*Amelia Mercer.*

Beneath it was an address.

I handed the photograph to Detective Harris.

“Someone wanted us to find her.””

“Or someone wanted us to believe we had,” he replied.

He photographed the image and called the officers pursuing the woman.

They returned minutes later.

She had escaped through a stairwell.

But the security team found a second envelope beneath the door of the room opposite ours.

Inside was a handwritten message.

The woman you seek is not the person you think she is. Ask Vanessa why she was chosen.

I looked toward the hallway.

“Vanessa is in police custody.””

Harris shook his head.

“Not anymore.””

I stared at him.

“What?””

“She was transferred to a secure holding facility after the warehouse incident. During a medical assessment, she complained of chest pain. She was taken to the hospital.””

“And?””

“She disappeared from the hospital less than an hour ago.””

My stomach dropped.

“Someone helped her escape?””

“We believe so.””

I looked at the photograph again.

The woman in the picture seemed ordinary. Mid-twenties, perhaps. Dark hair. A faint scar along her jaw.

Something about her face bothered me.

I couldn't explain it.

Then Rachel took the photograph from my hand.

Her fingers began to tremble.

“Ethan.””

“What?””

She pointed to the woman's left wrist.

A thin silver bracelet.

I had seen it before.

In the second video Nora recorded outside the bank, Vanessa wore the same bracelet.

But the woman in the photograph was not Vanessa.

She was younger, thinner, and had different eyes.

Rachel whispered, “There were two of them.””

Detective Harris leaned closer.

“What do you mean?””

“Vanessa had a sister.””

I turned toward her.

“You never mentioned a sister.””

“Because Vanessa told me she was an only child.””

Rachel studied the photograph.

“But years ago, I saw a woman who looked almost exactly like her standing beside Daniel Mercer. I assumed it was Vanessa. Now I think I was wrong.””

My mind raced.

A missing heir.

A hidden brother.

Two babies whose identities had been altered.

A woman who looked like Vanessa.

I called Mr. Whitmore and described the photograph.

He was silent for several seconds.

Then he said, “Ethan, your father left a note about a second Mercer daughter. He believed she had been adopted by a family outside Ohio.””

“Do you know her name?””

“No. But he wrote that she was the only person who could inherit the trust without triggering a legal dispute.””

I looked at Detective Harris.

“Find the address on the photograph.””

The officers traced it to a small apartment building on the outskirts of Columbus. We drove there under police escort just before dawn.

The apartment was on the third floor.

A woman opened the door after Harris knocked.

She was in her late twenties, with dark hair tied loosely behind her head. She wore jeans and an oversized sweater. Her expression was guarded, but when she saw the photograph in Harris's hand, she went completely still.

“Amelia Mercer?”” he asked.

She stared at him.

“Who wants to know?””

“Detective Harris. We need to ask you some questions about your family.””

Her eyes moved toward me.

Then she looked at Rachel.

And suddenly, she began to cry.

“I'm sorry,” she whispered.

I stepped forward.

“Do you know who I am?””

She nodded.

“Ethan Callahan.””

“How?””

“Because I've been looking for you for years.””

She opened the door wider.

Inside, the apartment was small but tidy. A framed photograph of an older couple sat on the mantel. Beside it was a picture of a baby wrapped in a yellow blanket.

Amelia noticed me looking.

“My adoptive parents raised me. They told me I was adopted when I was twelve. My mother died three years ago, but before she died, she gave me a box of documents.””

“What was in the box?””

“Birth records. Hospital papers. Letters from someone named Margaret Ellis.””

Rachel sat down slowly.

“Margaret placed you with your adoptive family?””

Amelia nodded.

“She said my birth parents had died. But the letters suggested that wasn't true.””

I stared at her.

“Do you know who your biological parents are?””

Amelia looked at me for a long moment.

“Daniel Mercer was my biological father. My mother was Elise.””

The room fell silent.

“You're the missing heir,” I said.

“That's what the documents claim.””

“Then why has everyone been looking for you?””

“Because my biological family believed I was dead. When I turned eighteen, someone began sending me anonymous letters. They said I had a claim to an inheritance, but they warned me never to contact the Mercers.””

She reached into a drawer and pulled out a thick envelope.

“My adoptive father hired a lawyer. We tried to investigate, but the lawyer disappeared. Then my father died in an accident.””

Her voice shook.

“I thought it was a coincidence until I found this.””

She handed the envelope to Detective Harris.

Inside was a photograph of Vanessa standing beside a woman who looked almost identical to her.

The woman wore a hospital bracelet.

On the back was a handwritten name.

*Victoria Cole.*

Amelia stared at the picture.

“That's Vanessa's sister.””

I frowned.

“Why would Vanessa's sister be connected to your adoption?””

Amelia took a breath.

“Because Victoria was the one who found me.””

She explained that Victoria had contacted her six months earlier, claiming she wanted to help uncover the truth about their family. She had provided copies of hospital records and promised to arrange a DNA test.

But when Amelia asked about Vanessa, Victoria became frightened.

“She told me Vanessa wasn't really Daniel's daughter,” Amelia said.

Rachel covered her mouth.

“Then whose daughter is she?””

Amelia looked directly at me.

“Your father's.””

The words seemed to stop time.

My father had been Vanessa's biological father.

Which meant Vanessa was my half-sister.

The woman I had almost married was my father's daughter.

I stumbled backward.

“No.””

Amelia's eyes filled with tears.

“That's why she needed the marriage stopped before the trust documents were authenticated. She wasn't trying to become your wife for money alone. She was trying to erase the evidence that would reveal her identity.””

I couldn't speak.

Then Detective Harris's phone rang.

He answered and listened.

When he ended the call, he looked at me with a grave expression.

“Victoria Cole has been found.””

“Where?””

“At the airport.””

“Is she alive?””

“Yes.””

He paused.

“But she has a passport under another name, and she's booked on a flight leaving in forty minutes.””

I looked at Amelia.

“Does she know where Vanessa is?””

Amelia nodded slowly.

“She was the person who helped Vanessa escape.””

Detective Harris turned toward the door.

“Then we're going to the airport.””

As we hurried outside, Amelia caught my arm.

“Ethan, wait.””

I turned.

She held up one final document.

It was a DNA report dated three weeks earlier.

The results identified Amelia as Daniel Mercer's biological daughter.

But the second result was highlighted in red.

*Relationship to Ethan Callahan: Full sibling probability, 99.8%.*

I stared at the page.

Amelia wasn't just the missing heir.

May you like

She was my sister.

And if she was my sister, then the woman who had been trying to destroy my family had spent two years pretending to love her own brother.
