Chapter 9: What Was Buried Beneath Our Home

Detective Harris arrived at the hospital less than twenty minutes later.

He read the messages twice, then asked me to forward them to the investigative team.

“Do you recognize the number?””

“No.””

“Has the sender asked you to meet them or threatened you directly?””

“Not yet.””

“Don't respond. We'll see whether the messages can be traced.””

I leaned forward.

“What does the foundation have to do with this?””

“We don't know. We're arranging a more thorough examination of the property. Until we establish what happened, don't go back there.””

“Detective, someone may have hidden evidence beneath my house.””

“And we're going to investigate it safely.””

He glanced toward Maya's bed.

“Your daughter also needs stability right now. Let the professionals handle the property.””

I hated waiting.

But I stayed.

While Maya slept, I called my business partner, Thomas, and explained that I had a family emergency and wouldn't be coming into the office.

“Take as much time as you need,” he said.

“I'll handle the projects.””

Then he hesitated.

“Marcus, there's something I should tell you. Claire called the office yesterday.””

I sat straighter.

“Why?””

“She asked whether you still had the old site plans for your house.””

My stomach tightened.

“What did you tell her?””

“That you kept them in your home office. She said she needed them for an insurance claim.””

“Did she say what the claim was for?””

“No. But she sounded nervous. She kept asking whether the plans showed the original basement layout.””

I thanked him and ended the call.

The house had been built decades before we bought it. We had renovated the kitchen, replaced the roof, and converted the garage into a workshop, but we'd never made major changes to the basement.

At least, I thought we hadn't.

I told Detective Harris about the call.

He wrote down Thomas's name and asked him to preserve any relevant messages or records.

Then the detective received a call from the team at my house.

He listened without speaking, his expression tightening.

When he hung up, he turned to me.

“Investigators found evidence of a recently disturbed section of the basement foundation.””

I stood.

“What does that mean?””

“It means part of the wall appears to have been altered. Specialists are determining whether anything was concealed behind it.””

“Was it Elena?””

“We haven't established that.””

“Then what have you found?””

He hesitated.

“A small metal case containing photographs, personal documents, and a sealed envelope bearing your name.””

I felt the room closing around me.

“What does the envelope say?””

“It hasn't been opened yet. The team is documenting it.””

“Why would someone bury a letter with my name on it?””

“We need to examine the contents before we can answer that.””

I looked toward Maya.

She had awakened and was listening.

“Daddy?””

I went to her bedside.

“It's okay, sweetheart.””

“Did they find the other room?””

“They're looking.””

She swallowed.

“Mommy said there were two places I wasn't allowed to look.””

“Two?””

She nodded.

“The room where Noah sleeps, and the place behind the wall.””

I exchanged a glance with Harris.

“Did you ever see anything behind the wall?””

Maya shook her head.

“Mommy took me downstairs once and told me to stand by the stairs. Then she opened a little door. I heard something fall.””

“What happened next?””

“She told me to go upstairs. When I asked what was inside, she said it was something Daddy had forgotten.””

My skin prickled.

Harris pulled a chair closer.

“Maya, can you tell me when that happened?””

“Last summer.””

“Did you see anyone else?””

“No.””

“Did you hear anyone?””

She hesitated.

“Someone was crying.””

The detective's pen stopped.

“Was it a man or a woman?””

“I don't know. It sounded like a woman.””

I forced myself to remain calm.

“Did you tell your mother?””

Maya nodded.

“She told me it was the television.””

“And did you believe her?””

“No.””

Her voice became smaller.

“Because the television was unplugged.””

Harris wrote that down.

A few minutes later, he received another update. The envelope had been opened according to procedure, and investigators had found a handwritten letter.

He read the first few lines silently.

Then he looked at me.

“Mr. Hayes, this letter appears to have been written by Elena Brooks.””

“What does it say?””

“It addresses you directly. I'm going to read a short passage.””

He unfolded the paper.

“Marcus, if you are reading this, Claire has finally told you enough to make you doubt yourself. Don't believe that you forgot me because of the accident. You forgot me because someone made sure you would never be allowed to remember what happened before it.”

My mouth went dry.

Harris continued.

“I didn't come to your house to destroy your family. I came because Noah was my son, and you deserved to know the truth about him.”

I sat down heavily.

Noah wasn't just a child Claire had hidden.

He was Elena's son.

And if the letter was genuine, I'd been connected to him long before I ever knew his name.

“There's more,” Harris said.

He read the next paragraph.

“Claire told you I was a stranger. She told me you had chosen your wife and daughter and wanted nothing to do with us. But I saw the messages she sent in your name. I knew they were false because you had already promised to help me.”

I shook my head.

“I never met her.””

“That's what we're trying to establish.””

The letter continued.

“On October 18, I came to the house with proof. I believed that once you saw the documents, you would understand why I had kept Noah away from Claire. I didn't know she had already prepared for my arrival.”

Harris stopped reading.

I stared at him.

“What did Claire prepare?””

“The remaining passage is being examined with the rest of the document.””

“Please.””

He looked down at the page again.

Then he read the final lines.

“If I disappear, look beneath the original foundation. Claire didn't build that room to hide Noah. She built it to hide what she did before Noah was born.”

I couldn't speak.

A nurse entered to check Maya's monitor, and I stepped aside to give her room.

When she left, my daughter reached for my hand.

“Daddy, I remember something else.””

I crouched beside her.

“What is it, sweetheart?””

“Mommy told me that when the police came, I had to say Noah was imaginary.””

I nodded slowly.

“Why?””

“Because she said if anyone found him, they would take him away.””

I stroked her hair.

“You don't have to protect that secret anymore.””

Maya looked at the door.

“But Mommy said you'd be in trouble too.””

I swallowed.

“Why would I be in trouble?””

She whispered, “Because you were there when it happened.””

The words struck harder than anything the detective had read.

“When what happened, Maya?””

She began shaking.

“The night Elena came to our house.””

My heart hammered.

“What do you remember?””

Maya closed her eyes.

“I heard Mommy shouting. Then I heard glass break. Then you came downstairs, and you were covered in blood.””

I staggered backward.

Harris immediately moved closer.

“Maya, you're safe. You don't need to force yourself to remember anything else right now.””

But my daughter had already started crying.

“Mommy told me Daddy hurt Elena. She said we had to hide Noah because Daddy would go to prison.””

I stared at the floor.

I remembered the rain.

The red car.

The knocking beneath my feet.

But now another image surfaced: my hands covered in something dark, Claire standing in front of me, whispering that everything would be all right.

Then the memory vanished.

My phone rang.

The detective answered his own phone, listened for several seconds, and looked at me with an expression I couldn't read.

“Mr. Hayes,” he said quietly, “we've uncovered something else beneath the foundation.””

“What?””

“A second envelope. It's addressed to Elena's son.””

He paused.

“Inside is a photograph of you holding a newborn baby.””

My chest tightened.

“That's impossible.””

“The photograph is dated three years ago.””

I shook my head.

“I never held Noah.””

Harris studied me.

“Then we need to establish who took the photograph and why.””

He placed his phone on the table and showed me the image.

A younger version of me stood beside a hospital bed, holding a newborn wrapped in a blue blanket.

Beside me was a woman with long brown hair.

Elena Brooks.

And on the back of the photograph, written in my own handwriting, were seven words.

*I remember what Claire did to you.*
