Chapter 5: The Birth Certificate With My Name On It

The officer sent me a photograph of the document after confirming it could be shared.

I opened it with shaking hands.

The certificate listed a boy named Noah Hayes, born three years earlier.

Under the father's name were two words.

*Marcus Hayes.*

Under the mother's name was a name I'd never seen before.

*Elena Brooks.*

I read it again.

Then a third time.

My wife was Claire.

I'd never heard of Elena Brooks.

I called the officer.

“Is this real?””

“We haven't authenticated it. It could be genuine, altered, or fraudulent. The document is being preserved as evidence.””

“Why would someone put my name on a child's birth certificate?””

“That is one of the questions we're investigating.””

I looked toward Maya's bed.

She was watching cartoons with the volume turned low, pretending not to notice my panic.

I stepped into the corridor.

“Could my wife have arranged this?””

“It's too early to draw conclusions. We need to establish Noah's identity, his medical condition, and how he came to be in that room.””

I ended the call and leaned against the wall.

My marriage had always seemed ordinary from the outside. Claire and I met at a friend's barbecue, married two years later, and bought our house shortly before Maya was born.

We had struggled financially when I first started my construction business. Claire worked part-time for a dental office, and I spent most weekends trying to secure new contracts.

There had been difficult years.

Arguments about money. Long stretches when we barely saw each other.

But I'd never suspected she was hiding another child.

Then I remembered something.

Three years earlier, Claire had told me she'd suffered a miscarriage.

She'd been six months into a pregnancy, according to what she'd said. She claimed she'd lost the baby after complications and spent several days recovering at her sister's house.

I hadn't questioned the details. I'd been devastated and tried to support her as best I could.

We never discussed the pregnancy again.

Could Noah have been that baby?

I called Claire's sister, Rebecca.

She answered after four rings.

“Marcus? Is everything okay?””

“Rebecca, I need to ask you something about Claire.””

Her voice immediately changed.

“What happened?””

“Did Claire ever stay with you three years ago after losing a baby?””

Silence.

Then she whispered, “Oh, God.””

My knees nearly gave way.

“You knew?””

“Marcus, I can't talk about this over the phone.””

“I'm at the hospital with Maya. The police found a child hidden in my basement.””

Rebecca began crying.

“Is he alive?””

The question chilled me.

“You know about Noah?””

She made a small, broken sound.

“I thought she had moved him somewhere else.””

“Moved him from where?””

“Marcus, please. You need to speak to Claire.””

“Claire won't tell me anything!””

“I can't be the one to explain this.””

“You can, and you will. A child has been living under my house.””

Rebecca was breathing hard.

Then she said, “The first time Claire told me about Noah, she said you knew. She said you'd agreed it was best to keep him away from Maya until everything settled down.””

“I never agreed to that.””

“I know that now.””

“What does that mean?””

Another silence.

“Three years ago, Claire came to my apartment with a newborn. She told me you were struggling with depression after the pregnancy, that you couldn't cope with another child, and that you'd asked her to keep him somewhere safe.””

My stomach twisted.

“That's a lie.””

“I believe you.””

“Why didn't you tell me?””

“Because when I questioned her, she showed me messages she said were from you. They looked real, Marcus. They said you didn't want to see the baby.””

I closed my eyes.

“I never sent those messages.””

“I know.””

“How?””

“Because last year, I asked to see them again. She said she'd deleted everything. Then I asked whether I could visit Noah, and she told me he'd been adopted.””

My blood ran cold.

“Adopted by whom?””

“I don't know.””

“Where did you see him last?””

Rebecca hesitated.

“About eight months ago. Claire brought me to your house when you were away on a business trip. She said she wanted me to meet him secretly.””

I gripped the phone so tightly my fingers hurt.

“You saw Noah in my house?””

“Yes. In the basement.””

“What did he look like?””

“Small. Pale. Frightened. He had a blue blanket.””

Maya's words echoed in my mind.

He cries when he can't find it.

“Why didn't you call the police?””

“I should have.”” Rebecca's voice cracked.

“I know that now. But Claire told me she'd lose custody of Maya if anyone discovered what she'd done. She said she was trying to protect both children.””

“Protect them from what?””

“I don't know.””

“Rebecca, I need the truth.””

She took a shaky breath.

“There's something else. When Claire first brought Noah to me, she said Elena had died.””

I stared at the wall.

“Who's Elena?””

“The baby's mother.””

The name on the certificate.

“Did you meet her?””

“No. Claire said Elena was someone from your past. She claimed you had a brief relationship before we met, and that you'd never known she was pregnant.””

My mind raced through old memories, old jobs, old apartments.

I had dated other women before Claire, of course. But no Elena Brooks came to mind.

“Why would Claire tell you that?””

“She said she was trying to keep Maya from growing up with a complicated family history.””

I let out a bitter laugh.

“She locked a child in a basement.””

Rebecca sobbed.

“I know.””

Before I could ask another question, a nurse approached.

“Marcus? The doctor needs you.””

I thanked Rebecca and hurried back to Maya's room.

Dr. Patel stood beside the bed with a serious expression.

“We've identified a substance in the container your daughter brought with her that requires further investigation. We still need to determine whether she ingested any of it, and our team is continuing to assess her symptoms.””

“Is she going to be okay?””

“We're monitoring her closely. I don't want to make promises before the evaluation is complete, but she's receiving appropriate care.””

I sat beside Maya.

“Sweetheart, did you know Noah was my son?””

She nodded slowly.

“Mommy said he was.””

“Did she tell you who his mother was?””

Maya shook her head.

“Only that she went away.””

“Did you ever hear the name Elena?””

Her face changed.

She stared at the blanket.

“Mommy said I wasn't allowed to say that name.””

My heart began pounding.

“Why?””

Maya's voice became barely audible.

“Because Elena was the lady who came to our house before Noah was born.””

I leaned closer.

“What lady?””

Maya looked at the door.

“The lady Mommy said Daddy had forgotten.””

Then she whispered something that made the birth certificate suddenly seem far less important.

“Daddy, Elena didn't go away.””

May you like

She swallowed.

“Mommy told me she was still in our house.””
