Chapter 14: The Man Who Paid My Wife

Detective Harris had the message forwarded to the investigative team before asking whether I recognized the name Daniel Brooks.

“Elena's brother,” I replied.

“My sister-in-law said he'd visited her years ago.””

“Did you ever meet him?””

“Not that I remember.””

Harris looked at the photograph again.

“Someone paid your wife to switch the bracelets. We need to establish who, why, and whether Daniel was involved.””

I shook my head.

“Elena's brother wouldn't help steal his sister's child.””

“Perhaps not. But we can't assume anything.””

The detective was right.

Every time I believed I understood the story, another piece contradicted what I thought I knew.

Patricia Moore had admitted to switching the bracelets, but she hadn't established which baby ended up with which family.

Elena had tried to recover her daughter, but Claire had concealed the truth.

And Daniel Brooks's name appeared on a photograph connected to the night everything began.

Then the hospital called.

The records team had found a financial document attached to the original authorization. It showed that a payment had been made to a private intermediary shortly before the transfer.

The payment originated from an account associated with a company Claire had worked for years earlier.

I stared at Harris.

“Was Claire paid to take Maya?””

“We're investigating that possibility.””

“Who owned the company?””

“An individual named Richard Voss.””

The name meant nothing to me.

But when Harris showed me a photograph of the man, I recognized him immediately.

Richard Voss had been a business associate of my father.

He'd attended my wedding.

He'd given a toast about family loyalty and how some secrets were worth keeping.

I remembered him shaking my hand that night.

You married a remarkable woman, Marcus. Make sure you always trust her.

I felt nauseated.

“Why would he be involved in this?””

“We don't know yet.””

Harris arranged for the relevant financial records to be preserved. He also contacted the authorities responsible for locating Voss.

While the investigation continued, I remained with Maya.

She was growing tired of the hospital room, but every time a staff member approached the door, she glanced up anxiously.

“Are they taking me away?”” she asked.

I pulled my chair closer.

“No one is taking you anywhere without making sure you're safe.””

“But what if Elena wants me?””

I paused.

“Then we'll talk about it when we know more. You don't have to decide anything today.””

Maya rubbed her eyes.

“What if she doesn't love me anymore?””

I held her hand.

“Love doesn't disappear just because people have been separated.””

She looked at me for a long time.

“Do you still love Mommy?””

The question hurt more than I expected.

“I don't know what I feel about Mommy right now.””

Maya lowered her head.

“Does that mean families can stop loving each other?””

I brushed her hair away from her face.

“Sometimes adults make choices that hurt people. But you don't have to carry their mistakes.””

She leaned against my arm.

“I wish we could all just have dinner together.””

I swallowed hard.

“So do I, sweetheart.””

Later that afternoon, Detective Harris returned with news.

“Richard Voss has been located. He's agreed to speak with investigators.””

“Does he know about the child?””

“He claims he knows nothing about the basement or the hospital records. However, financial records indicate he transferred money to an account connected to Claire shortly before Maya's birth.””

“Then he lied.””

“Possibly. We need to establish what the money was for.””

Harris showed me another photograph.

This one depicted a handwritten note recovered from a storage box at Voss's former office.

It read:

The arrangement must remain confidential. The Brooks child cannot return to Elena. Claire understands her responsibilities.

The note was signed with the initials R.V.

I stared at it.

“Why would Voss care whether Elena got her daughter back?””

Harris closed the folder.

“That is precisely what we're trying to determine.””

My phone rang.

An unknown number.

I answered, and a man spoke immediately.

“Marcus Hayes?””

“Yes. Who is this?””

“Daniel Brooks.””

I stood.

“Elena's brother?””

“Yes.””

“Where have you been?””

“Trying to stay alive.””

My blood ran cold.

“What does that mean?””

“It means Claire wasn't working alone.””

I motioned for Harris to listen.

Daniel continued.

“Your wife took my sister's child, but she wasn't the one who first arranged the switch. Richard Voss was.””

“Why?””

“Because Elena discovered that his company had been using falsified birth records to cover up illegal transfers of custody.””

I felt sick.

“Are you saying other children were taken?””

“I'm saying the records weren't limited to Maya and Noah. Elena found evidence of a larger operation, and Voss needed her silenced.””

Harris signaled for the call to be preserved and began arranging a formal interview.

I gripped the phone.

“What happened to Elena?””

Daniel's breathing grew uneven.

“I don't know where she is now. But I know she was alive when Claire took her into your basement.””

My knees weakened.

“You knew about the basement?””

“I helped build the false wall.””

The words hit me like a punch.

“What?””

“Voss told me it was temporary. He said Elena needed somewhere to stay while the paperwork was corrected. I believed him.””

“And when did you realize the truth?””

“When I came back and found the door locked. Claire told me Elena had left. But I heard her voice from behind the wall.””

I closed my eyes.

“You left her there?””

Daniel began crying.

“I tried to open the door. Claire threatened to call the police and tell them I'd kidnapped Noah. She had documents with my name on them. I panicked.””

“You left my house while a woman was trapped inside?””

“I was a coward.””

For a moment, I couldn't speak.

Then Daniel continued.

“I came back months later. The door was open, but Elena was gone. Claire said she'd escaped. I never believed her.””

“Why didn't you report it?””

“Because I received a photograph of my daughter sleeping in her crib. Someone had written a message beneath it.””

He paused.

Keep quiet, or your child will disappear too.

Harris's face tightened.

“Daniel,” he said into the phone, “we need you to come forward immediately and provide a statement.””

“I will. But there's something Marcus needs to know first.””

I leaned closer.

“What?””

“Claire didn't take Maya because she wanted another daughter.””

My stomach twisted.

“Then why?””

Daniel's voice dropped.

“Because Elena had proof that Maya was born to someone else entirely.””

I looked toward my daughter.

“Who?””

Daniel took a shaky breath.

“Richard Voss's daughter. Her name was Olivia. She died giving birth, and Voss couldn't accept that her baby was gone.””

I stared at Harris.

Daniel continued.

“Voss arranged the switch so his granddaughter could be raised under a different identity. He paid Claire to take the child and convinced everyone that the records were merely being corrected.””

My mind reeled.

“Then who was the other baby?””

“Elena's daughter.””

I looked at Maya.

If Daniel was telling the truth, the girl I'd raised as my daughter might be Richard Voss's granddaughter.

And the child born to Elena might have been sent somewhere else.

“Where is Elena now?”” I asked.

Daniel's voice broke.

“That's what I've been trying to find out for eight years.””

Before the call ended, he gave Harris a location where he could meet investigators safely.

Then my phone buzzed with a final message.

*Richard Voss is on his way to the hospital. He knows Maya has the necklace.*

I looked at the silver heart pendant on Maya's bedside table.

Inside it was Elena's photograph.

And suddenly I understood why Claire had been so desperate to get the backpack back.

The necklace wasn't merely a keepsake.

May you like

It was evidence.

And someone was coming to take it.
