Chapter 4: The Voice Behind the Second Door
“The child we've found is not the only thing hidden down here.””
The officer's words followed me long after the call ended.
I stood outside Maya's hospital room, staring at my phone while the hallway lights hummed overhead. Through the glass, I could see my daughter sleeping beneath a thin blanket, one hand curled around the stuffed rabbit she'd brought from home.
She had begged me to protect her backpack.
She had apologized for being bad.
And somewhere beneath my house, police officers were discovering things my wife had spent years keeping secret.
I called the officer back.
“What do you mean, not the only thing?””
“We've located a concealed room containing evidence of recent occupancy. There's another compartment behind it. We're proceeding cautiously.””
“Is the child alive?””
“Yes. The child is alive, but we're assessing the situation.””
I gripped the windowsill.
“Please tell me if it's my son.””
There was a pause.
“Sir, we haven't established the child's identity yet.””
“My daughter said his name is Noah.””
“We're aware of that information. Child protection is being contacted.””
“Can I come home?””
“No. Stay at the hospital with your daughter. We don't know whether anyone else may be involved, and we need you available for questions.””
I wanted to argue, but I knew he was right.
If I left Maya alone, even for a few minutes, she might wake up terrified and think I'd abandoned her.
So I went back inside.
Nia was checking the monitor beside Maya's bed. She glanced at me and immediately noticed my expression.
“What's happened?””
“The police found someone.””
Her face softened.
“Have they confirmed who?””
“No.””
I sat beside Maya and brushed a strand of hair away from her forehead.
Nia lowered her voice.
“Marcus, the doctor needs to know exactly what your daughter said about the substance she may have been given. If you remember anything else, tell us immediately.””
“I will.””
She hesitated before adding, “And if you suspect your wife may return and attempt to remove Maya, let hospital security know. We'll follow the appropriate safeguarding procedures.””
I nodded.
When Nia left, Maya opened her eyes.
“Daddy?””
“I'm here, sweetheart.””
“Did they find Noah?””
I swallowed.
“They found a child in the basement. They're making sure he's safe.””
Her lower lip trembled.
“Did he have his blue blanket?””
“I don't know, baby.””
“He cries when he can't find it.””
I squeezed her hand.
“Tell me about the blanket.””
Maya stared at the ceiling.
“Mommy gave it to him when he first came. It was too big, so I folded it for him. He likes the soft side.””
“How long has Noah been in the basement?””
She looked toward the door before answering.
“Since I was little.””
“How little?””
“Five, maybe.””
The answer struck me like a blow.
Three years.
My daughter had known about a hidden child for three years.
I had been sleeping in the same house, eating dinner at the same table, and kissing my wife goodnight without knowing.
“Why did you keep it secret for so long?””
“Mommy said it was a game. She said I was helping her.””
“What happened when you wanted to tell me?””
Maya's fingers tightened around mine.
“She took my rabbit away for a week. Then she said Noah would get hurt if I told.””
I looked down at the stuffed animal beside her pillow.
“Did Mommy ever hurt you?””
Maya didn't answer.
Her eyes filled with tears, and she turned her face toward the wall.
I didn't push her.
A few minutes later, my phone rang.
The officer was back.
“Mr. Hayes, we have located a young boy. He's conscious and responding to our questions. Medical personnel are on the way to assess him.””
I pressed a hand against my mouth.
“Is he injured?””
“He appears frightened and may need medical attention. We aren't going to speculate until he's examined.””
“Does he know Maya?””
“We've told him we're trying to locate his family. When we mentioned the name Maya, he became visibly emotional.””
I closed my eyes.
“That's my daughter.””
“I understand, sir. We'll keep you informed.””
When I hung up, Maya was watching me.
“They found him,” I whispered.
For the first time since we'd arrived at the hospital, my daughter smiled.
It was small and uncertain, but it was real.
“Can I see him?””
“Not until the doctors say it's safe.””
“Will he think I forgot him?””
“No, sweetheart.””
She studied my face.
“Will he think I left him there?””
My heart broke.
“You were a little girl. You didn't have the power to fix what the adults did. None of this is your fault.””
Maya started crying again, but this time she leaned into me instead of hiding.
I held her until her breathing slowed.
Then my phone buzzed with a message from an unknown number.
*You need to stop the police. You're making a terrible mistake.*
A second message appeared.
*Ask Claire what happened before Noah came to live with you. Ask her about the woman who disappeared.*
I stared at the screen.
Before I could respond, another message arrived.
*And Marcus? Don't trust the story your wife told you about your son.*
I read it twice.
Our son.
I had spent the last few minutes believing the worst secret in my house was a child hidden in the basement.
Now someone was telling me Noah's existence wasn't even the beginning.
I called the officer immediately and reported the messages.
He asked me to preserve the phone and not contact the sender.
Then he said something that made my stomach tighten.
“Mr. Hayes, we found several documents in the concealed room. One of them appears to contain your name.””
I stared at the hospital door.
“What kind of document?””
“A birth certificate.””
My breath caught.
“Whose?””
The officer paused.
“That's what we're trying to establish. But the name listed as the father is Marcus Hayes.””
I looked at Maya.
May you like
She was watching me with frightened eyes.
And for the first time, I wondered whether the child hidden beneath my house had been part of my life long before I'd ever heard his name.
