Chapter 9: The Truth Behind the Disappearance

The silence after the video ended felt unbearable.

Diane stared at Marcus.

Not with anger.

With betrayal.

“You knew.””

Marcus said nothing.

Ray stepped closer.

“You knew who helped Ethan disappear.””

Marcus looked at the screen.

Then at Diane.

“This was never supposed to happen.””

Diane laughed bitterly.

“Neither was my son disappearing.””

Marcus’s expression hardened.

“You don’t know what happened.””

“No.””

Her voice shook.

“But I know you were involved.””

Ray looked between them.

“Someone needs to start explaining.””

Marcus walked toward the stairs.

“We should leave.””

Ray blocked him.

“No.””

Marcus looked down at him.

“Move.””

“No.””

For a second, nobody moved.

Then Marcus reached into his jacket.

Ray immediately stepped back.

“Don’t.””

Marcus stopped.

Slowly, he pulled out a phone.

Not a weapon.

He opened a message.

A photo appeared.

Ethan.

Alive.

Standing outside a building.

Diane grabbed the phone.

“When was this taken?””

“Yesterday.””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“Where is he?””

Marcus took the phone back.

“That’s complicated.””

Ray stared at him.

“You’ve known where he was this whole time?””

“Yes.””

“Then why didn’t you tell her?””

Marcus looked at Diane.

“Because Ethan didn’t want you to know.””

That hurt her more than anything else.

“No.””

“He believed you were in danger.””

“From who?””

Marcus didn’t answer.

Diane stepped forward.

“From you?””

Marcus looked away.

That was enough.

Ray noticed.

“You’re not the person Ethan was hiding from.””

Marcus said nothing.

“You’re the person he trusted.””

Marcus finally looked at him.

“I tried to help him.””

Diane shook her head.

“You helped him disappear.””

“Yes.””

The honesty shocked all of us.

“Why?””

Marcus looked at the hidden room.

“Because if Ethan stayed, he would have died.””

The words landed heavily.

Ray crossed his arms.

“Tell us everything.””

Marcus hesitated.

Then sat down.

“Ethan found evidence against powerful people.””

“Who?””

“I can’t say.””

Ray frowned.

“You expect us to believe that?””

Marcus looked at him.

“You think this is a game?””

“No.””

“Then listen.””

He pointed toward the hard drive.

“That evidence can ruin people.””

Diane looked at the drive.

“Why didn’t Ethan release it?””

“Because someone close to him betrayed him.””

The room became quiet.

“Who?”” Diane asked.

Marcus looked at her.

“That’s the part he never told me.””

A notification appeared on the hard drive.

Everyone turned.

A new file.

Created moments ago.

Ray looked confused.

“It’s receiving something.””

Marcus stood immediately.

“No.””

“What?””

Marcus stared at the screen.

“Someone is accessing it remotely.””

The speakers crackled.

Then a voice came through.

A voice none of us recognized.

“Diane.””

She froze.

The voice continued.

“You should have left the room closed.””

Ray looked at Marcus.

“Who is that?””

Marcus whispered:

“The person who has been watching all of you.””

The voice continued.

“You found the files.””

The screen showed a live camera feed.

Not from the shed.

Not from the basement.

From our house.

I felt the blood leave my face.

The camera showed our living room.

Our kitchen.

Our front door.

Someone had been watching us.

The voice spoke again.

“And now that you opened them…”

A pause.

“Everyone who knows about this becomes part of the problem.””

The feed suddenly changed.

A different camera angle appeared.

Outside.

Looking directly at us through the basement window.

Then the person behind the camera stepped forward.

The image became clearer.

And Diane whispered the name.

“Ethan.””

But Marcus looked terrified.

Because he knew it wasn’t Ethan.

May you like

It was someone wearing Ethan’s jacket.

And holding Ethan’s phone.
