Chapter 12: The Secret Diane Buried

Nobody expected Diane to answer.

Not immediately.

She sat down slowly.

Like the weight of the truth had finally become too heavy to carry.

Ethan stood across from her.

Waiting.

“Mom.””

Diane looked up.

“I wanted you to have a normal life.””

“That’s not an answer.””

She closed her eyes.

“You’re right.””

Ray stayed quiet.

This was their family’s truth.

But the danger around them was still growing.

Diane looked at Ethan.

“Your father’s name was Daniel Keller.””

Ethan frowned.

“That’s impossible.””

“Why?””

“Because I’ve never met him.””

Diane nodded.

“That was the point.””

The basement felt smaller.

“You knew where he was.””

Diane didn’t answer.

Ethan’s face changed.

“You knew?””

She whispered:

“Yes.””

“Where?””

“Close.””

The monitor suddenly flickered.

Daniel’s voice returned.

“You lied to him his entire life.””

Diane looked at the screen.

“You don’t get to talk about lies.””

The confidence in her voice surprised me.

For the first time, Diane wasn’t afraid.

Daniel laughed.

“You still think you can control this.””

Ethan stepped toward the screen.

“Why did you disappear?””

A pause.

Then Daniel answered:

“Because I found out what your mother was hiding.””

Ethan looked confused.

Diane stood.

“Don’t listen to him.””

“Why?””

“Because he’s manipulating you.””

Daniel laughed.

“She always did that.””

Ethan looked between them.

“I need the truth.””

Diane looked at her son.

Then at the hidden room.

“I met your father when I was young.””

She took a breath.

“He wasn’t the man everyone thought he was.””

Daniel’s voice interrupted.

“Careful.””

Diane ignored him.

“He worked with the same company Ethan later joined.””

Ethan froze.

“What?””

“Yes.””

“You knew?””

“I knew the company was dangerous.””

“Then why let me work there?””

Diane looked devastated.

“Because I didn’t know at first.””

The hard drive suddenly made a noise.

A file opened.

A recording.

Ethan pressed play.

Daniel’s voice from years earlier filled the room.

“If anyone finds this, they’ll come after the boy.””

Diane grabbed the table.

“No.””

The recording continued.

“Diane doesn’t know the full truth.””

Ethan looked at his mother.

The recording stopped.

Everyone stared.

“What does that mean?”” Ray asked.

Diane looked terrified.

“I don’t know.””

Ethan shook his head.

“You do.””

“No.””

“You always protected me from something.””

Diane started crying.

“I protected you from him.””

She pointed at the monitor.

“Your father wasn’t just involved with the company.””

Silence.

“He created it.””

Ethan stepped back.

Marcus looked stunned.

“That’s impossible.””

Diane shook her head.

“It’s true.””

Daniel’s voice came through again.

“Finally.””

The screen showed his face.

Older.

Cold.

“You finally told him.””

Ethan stared.

“Why did you come back now?””

Daniel smiled.

“Because the files are no longer hidden.””

“What do you want?””

Daniel leaned closer to the camera.

“I want what Ethan stole.””

The hard drive.

Ethan looked down.

“And if I refuse?””

Daniel smiled.

“Then everyone who helped you disappears.””

The basement lights suddenly went out again.

A loud crash came from upstairs.

Ray looked toward the staircase.

Someone had broken into the house.

Ethan grabbed the hard drive.

“We have to move.””

Diane looked at him.

“Where?””

Ethan stared at the hidden door beneath the shed.

“There’s one place they won’t expect.””

Ray looked confused.

“Where?””

Ethan opened the secret panel deeper inside the basement.

Behind it was a narrow tunnel.

Diane’s face turned pale.

Because she knew exactly where it led.

“My son…”

Ethan looked back.

“I’m sorry, Mom.””

He opened the tunnel door.

“Because this is the place I hid the real evidence.””

And from somewhere deep underground…

a phone began ringing.
