Chapter 6: The Name She Hid
The room became silent after Ray said that name.
Ethan Keller.
Diane stared at the floor.
Like the metal panel beneath Scout’s paws had opened something she had spent years trying to bury.
“You said your brother,” Ray said quietly.
Diane closed her eyes.
“I know.””
“Why?””
She didn’t answer.
I looked at the photos again.
The young man.
The family.
The dates.
Something didn’t add up.
“Diane,” I said softly, “what happened to Ethan?””
Her hands trembled.
“He disappeared.””
The word hung in the air.
Ray stepped closer.
“When?””
“Seven years ago.””
“And you built this room after?””
She nodded.
“Partly.””
“What does that mean?””
Diane sat down on the stairs.
For the first time, she looked older.
Not angry.
Not intimidating.
Just tired.
“Ethan was twenty-two.””
She looked at the hidden room.
“He had problems. Not the kind people understood.””
Ray listened.
“He got into trouble. He made mistakes. People judged him.””
“What kind of mistakes?”” I asked.
Diane looked away.
“That doesn’t matter anymore.””
Ray’s voice hardened.
“It matters if you’re hiding something underground.””
Diane looked at him.
“I was trying to protect him.””
“From what?””
She didn’t answer.
Instead, she stood and walked toward the far wall.
There was another small monitor there.
Old.
Dusty.
She turned it on.
The screen flickered.
Then showed a camera feed.
The backyard.
The fence.
Our house.
My breath caught.
“She was watching us,” I whispered.
Diane immediately looked embarrassed.
“I installed cameras for security.””
“You recorded our yard?””
“No.””
Ray pointed at the screen.
“The camera faces directly at our property.””
Diane looked down.
“I needed to know if someone was coming.””
“Someone like who?””
Again, silence.
Then the monitor changed.
A saved recording appeared.
A date.
Three months earlier.
Diane pressed play.
The footage showed her shed.
At night.
A person standing outside.
Not Diane.
A man.
He was looking around.
Checking the doors.
Diane whispered:
“He found me.””
Ray looked at her.
“Who?””
She paused the video.
The man’s face was partially visible.
Enough to see fear in Diane’s eyes.
“He was Ethan’s old friend.””
“What did he want?””
Diane looked toward the hidden room.
“He wanted what Ethan left behind.””
I felt confused.
“What did Ethan leave behind?””
Diane didn’t answer.
Ray walked toward the monitor.
“Where is Ethan now?””
Her eyes filled with tears.
“I don’t know.””
The answer shocked me.
“You don’t know?””
She shook her head.
“He vanished.””
“Seven years ago?””
“Yes.””
“Then why hide this?””
Diane looked at the room.
“Because he called me six months ago.””
The air seemed to disappear.
Ray stared at her.
“What?””
“He called from a blocked number.””
“What did he say?””
Diane’s voice dropped.
“He said if anyone found the room, I should never open the last compartment.””
Ray looked at the hidden panel.
The one Scout found.
“The compartment with his name?””
Diane nodded.
Nobody moved.
Then suddenly, the panel clicked.
All three of us turned.
The metal door slowly opened by itself.
Inside was a small box.
Not old.
Not dusty.
Recently placed.
Ray reached toward it.
Diane grabbed his arm.
“No.””
Her voice shook.
“Don’t open it.””
Ray looked at her.
“Why?””
Diane stared at the box.
Then whispered:
“Because Ethan told me if that box was ever opened…”
She stopped.
A notification sound came from inside the box.
A phone.
Hidden inside.
The screen lit up.
A message appeared.
May you like
And the name at the top made Diane collapse against the wall.
*ETHAN KELLER*.
