Chapter 11: The Son Who Came Back
Nobody moved.
Diane stared at the figure standing at the top of the stairs.
“Ethan?””
The person stepped into the light.
His face was thinner.
His hair was longer.
But it was him.
Her son.
Alive.
Diane covered her mouth.
“No…”
Ethan slowly walked down.
“Mom.””
She ran toward him.
For a moment, nobody said anything.
She hugged him like she was afraid he would disappear again.
“You’re alive.””
Ethan closed his eyes.
“I’m sorry.””
Ray watched carefully.
He didn’t interrupt.
He knew this wasn’t the moment.
But something still bothered him.
The camera.
The message.
The person outside.
Finally, Ray asked:
“Where have you been?””
Ethan looked at him.
“I couldn’t come home.””
“Why?””
“Because someone was watching.””
Diane pulled away.
“Who?””
Ethan looked at Marcus.
“Tell her.””
Marcus looked down.
“I already told her part of it.””
Ethan sighed.
“Not enough.””
He walked toward the table.
The hard drive was still there.
“That contains evidence.””
“Against who?”” Ray asked.
Ethan looked at the floor.
“Against people who have influence.””
“That doesn’t answer the question.””
Ethan nodded.
“You’re right.””
He looked at Diane.
“The company I worked for wasn’t just developing security systems.””
“What were they doing?””
“Tracking people.””
The room became silent.
“Tracking?””
Ethan nodded.
“Private surveillance. Illegal monitoring. Blackmail.””
Diane looked horrified.
“And you found proof.””
“Yes.””
“Then why not go to the police?””
Ethan gave a sad smile.
“Because some of the people involved were connected to law enforcement.””
Ray crossed his arms.
“So you ran.””
“I hid.””
“For seven years.””
Ethan looked at his mother.
“I thought if everyone believed I was gone, they would stop looking.””
Diane’s eyes filled with tears.
“You let me think you were dead.””
“I know.””
“Do you know what that did to me?””
Ethan looked away.
“I know.””
The pain in the room was impossible to ignore.
Then Ray noticed something.
“You came here tonight.””
Ethan nodded.
“Because the files opened.””
“How did you know?””
Ethan looked toward the camera.
“Because they know too.””
As if summoned by the words, the basement monitor turned on.
The unknown person appeared again.
Everyone froze.
This time, the face was clearer.
Ethan stared at the screen.
“No.””
Diane looked at him.
“Who is that?””
Ethan’s face lost all color.
“My father.””
The room went completely still.
Ray looked at Diane.
But she looked just as shocked.
“Ethan…”
“My father didn’t die.””
Diane stepped backward.
“No.””
Ethan shook his head.
“He disappeared.””
Marcus whispered:
“That’s impossible.””
Ethan looked at him.
“You knew?””
Marcus looked away.
“You never told me everything.””
The screen showed the man smiling.
“I knew you would find the room eventually.””
Ethan stepped toward the monitor.
“Why?””
His father’s voice came through.
“Because you always believed your mother could protect you.””
Diane began shaking.
“Why are you doing this?””
The man smiled.
“Because you kept something from me.””
“What?””
The screen changed.
A document appeared.
A birth certificate.
Ethan stared.
Then froze.
Ray noticed.
“What is it?””
Ethan couldn’t speak.
Diane looked at the paper.
And her face changed.
Because the document revealed something she had hidden for twenty-two years.
Ethan looked at his mother.
“You told me my father abandoned us.””
Diane started crying.
“I was trying to protect you.””
Ethan stared at the screen.
Then whispered:
“Mom…”

The room went silent.
“Who is my real father?””
