Chapter 13: The Evidence Beneath the House

The phone kept ringing.

Deep inside the tunnel.

A slow, repeated sound.

Like someone wanted us to follow it.

Nobody moved.

Then Ethan stepped forward.

“Stay behind me.””

Ray grabbed a flashlight from the workbench.

“You’re not going alone.””

Ethan looked at him.

“This isn’t your fight.””

Ray shook his head.

“You’re wrong.””

He glanced toward the stairs where the sound of footsteps echoed above.

“Someone broke into my house. It became my fight.””

Ethan didn’t argue.

Diane looked at the tunnel entrance.

“I never knew this was here.””

Ethan looked at her.

“That’s because I built it after I found out.””

“Found out what?””

“That Dad was searching the room.””

Diane’s face tightened.

“You knew?””

“I found his plans.””

Ethan entered the tunnel.

The walls were narrow.

Old.

Concrete surrounded us.

The deeper we went, the warmer the air became.

Ray noticed immediately.

“This connects to the shed.””

Ethan nodded.

“And somewhere else.””

We walked for several minutes.

Then the tunnel opened.

A hidden chamber.

Not like Diane’s safe room.

This was different.

Smaller.

Colder.

There were shelves.

Computer equipment.

Boxes of documents.

And in the center of the room was a table.

On it sat a single envelope.

With Diane’s name.

She froze.

“No.””

Ethan looked at her.

“You knew about this?””

She shook her head.

“No.””

Ray picked up the envelope.

It was old.

But sealed.

“Should we open it?””

Diane stared.

“I don’t know.””

Ethan took it.

“I do.””

He opened it carefully.

Inside was a letter.

The handwriting was familiar.

Daniel’s.

Ethan read silently.

Then his expression changed.

“What?””

He handed it to Ray.

Ray read it.

Then looked at Diane.

“What does this mean?””

She took the paper.

Her hands shook.

The letter said:

*Diane, if you are reading this, Ethan has found the truth. I didn’t leave because I wanted to. I left because you were protecting the wrong person.*

Diane stepped back.

“That’s a lie.””

Ethan looked at her.

“Is it?””

She didn’t answer.

The room filled with silence.

Then the computer screen turned on.

Everyone jumped.

A video started playing.

Daniel appeared.

Older.

Tired.

But alive.

“If Ethan is watching this, then I failed.””

Ethan stared.

Daniel continued.

“You believe I abandoned you.””

A pause.

“But your mother knows the truth.””

Diane whispered:

“Stop.””

The video continued.

“I was investigating the company. I discovered what they were doing.””

Ethan moved closer.

“They were tracking people.””

Daniel nodded on screen.

“They were collecting private information. Using it to control people.””

Ray looked at the hard drives.

Daniel continued.

“When I tried to expose them, they threatened my family.””

The video froze.

Then a new file appeared.

A list of names.

Executives.

Officials.

People involved.

Ray stared.

“This is huge.””

Ethan nodded.

“That’s why they came after me.””

Suddenly, the tunnel shook.

A loud impact came from above.

Someone was trying to open the hidden entrance.

Diane looked toward the ceiling.

“They found us.””

Ethan grabbed the hard drive.

“No.””

Ray looked at him.

“What?””

Ethan stared at the screen.

“They wanted us to come here.””

The realization hit all of us.

The hidden tunnel.

The phone.

The evidence.

Everything.

A trap.

Then the computer displayed one final message.

Not from Daniel.

Not from Ethan.

From someone else.

*YOU FINALLY BROUGHT THEM TO THE ARCHIVE. THANK YOU.*

Ethan’s face went pale.

“Who sent that?””

The lights flickered.

A door behind the shelves slowly opened.

Someone had been waiting inside.

And when the person stepped forward, Ethan whispered:

May you like

“No…”

Because the person standing there was the one person he trusted most.
