Chapter 6: The Note In Her Backpack

The photo filled my screen.

A small piece of paper.

Folded twice.

Hidden inside my daughter’s backpack.

The handwriting was unmistakable.

Vanessa’s.

My eyes moved across the words.

“Remember what happens when you tell Dad things.””

For several seconds, I couldn’t move.

The kitchen disappeared.

The voices disappeared.

Everything disappeared except that sentence.

I looked up.

Vanessa was watching my face.

And she knew.

She knew I had seen it.

“What is that?”” I asked.

Her expression changed.

“It’s not what you think.””

I held up my phone.

“Then tell me what it is.””

She didn’t answer.

“Vanessa.””

Her lips pressed together.

“It was taken out of context.””

I laughed softly.

“Out of context?””

I turned the screen toward her.

“Explain this.””

She looked at the photo.

Then away.

“I was frustrated.””

“You wrote this to a seven-year-old.””

“I didn’t mean it like that.””

“How did you mean it?””

Silence.

That was becoming her answer for everything.

I walked upstairs.

“Lily.””

She looked up.

“Yes, Dad?””

“Come here.””

She slowly walked toward me.

I showed her the picture.

Her face changed immediately.

She recognized it.

“You know this note?””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“Yes.””

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

She looked down.

“Because she said you would think I was trying to ruin our family.””

My chest tightened.

“No one is allowed to make you believe that.””

Lily wiped her face.

“She said if you got angry, everything would change.””

I looked at Vanessa.

“Did you say that?””

Vanessa crossed her arms.

“I was trying to keep peace.””

“No.””

My voice was calm.

But even I could hear how angry I was.

“You were trying to control her.””

Vanessa shook her head.

“You don’t understand what it’s like being a stepmother.””

“You’re right.””

I looked at Lily.

“I don’t.””

Then I looked back.

“But I understand what it’s like being a father.””

Vanessa’s expression softened for a moment.

“Daniel…”

“No.””

I stepped back.

“I trusted you with the most important person in my life.””

Her eyes narrowed.

“So now I’m the enemy?””

“I didn’t say that.””

“You’re acting like it.””

I looked at the note again.

“I’m acting like I found out my daughter was scared to ask for shoes.””

The room went silent.

Then something unexpected happened.

Ava came downstairs.

She was crying.

“Dad?””

I turned.

“What happened?””

She looked at her mother.

Then at me.

“I need to tell you something too.””

Vanessa immediately said:

“Ava, don’t.””

But Ava kept going.

“Mom told us not to let Lily sit with us when our friends came over.””

My heart sank.

“Why?””

Ava wiped her tears.

“She said Lily would embarrass us.””

Vanessa’s face changed.

“That is not true.””

Ava shook her head.

“You said her clothes looked cheap.””

Nobody spoke.

Because a child had just confirmed everything.

I looked at Lily.

She was crying silently.

Not loudly.

Not dramatically.

The same way she had cried in the shoe store.

Quietly.

Like she had learned nobody wanted to hear it.

I walked over and hugged her.

“I’m sorry.””

She whispered:

“For what?””

“For not seeing it sooner.””

She held onto me tightly.

And for the first time that day, she stopped looking afraid.

Then my phone rang again.

Unknown number.

I answered.

“Hello?””

A man’s voice spoke.

“Mr. Carter?””

“Yes?””

“This is from the bank’s fraud department.””

My eyebrows tightened.

“Fraud?””

“Yes.””

I looked at Vanessa.

The color disappeared from her face.

The man continued.

“We noticed several unusual purchases made from your account.””

My grip tightened around the phone.

“What purchases?””

There was a pause.

Then he said:

“Luxury items purchased over the last six months.””

I looked at the shopping bags.

The shoes.

The clothes.

The receipts.

Then he added:

“And there’s something else.””

My stomach dropped.

“What?””

The man lowered his voice.

“Someone has been transferring money from an account registered for Lily’s future expenses.””

I stopped breathing.

“Which account?””

The answer came.

And it changed everything.

“Your daughter’s college savings account.””
