Chapter 12: The Man Outside the School
I couldn’t breathe.
The photo stayed on my screen.
Lily.
Standing next to a stranger.
Marcus.
She wasn’t smiling.
She looked confused.
Afraid.
I immediately called the number.
No answer.
I called again.
Nothing.
My mother grabbed my arm.
“Daniel.””
“I need to find her.””
“She’s here.””
I looked toward the kitchen.
Lily was gone.
My blood turned cold.
I ran through the house.
“Lily?””
No answer.
Then I heard laughter.
Outside.
I opened the back door.
Lily was sitting on the porch with my mother, showing her a drawing.
Relief hit me so hard my knees almost weakened.
I ran to her.
“Sweetheart.””
She looked up.
“What?””
I hugged her.
Too tightly.
She laughed softly.
“Dad, you’re squeezing me.””
I pulled back.
“Sorry.””
She looked confused.
“Are you okay?””
I forced a smile.
“Yeah.””
But I wasn’t.
Because someone had gotten close enough to my daughter to take that photo.
And I didn’t know how.
I spent the next hour checking every security camera around the house.
Nothing.
No Marcus.
No stranger.
Then I checked Lily’s school messages.
A notification appeared.
A new message from the school office.
Mr. Carter, please call us regarding an incident this morning.
My stomach dropped.
I called immediately.
“Hello?””
“Mr. Carter?””
“Yes.””
“This is the school counselor.””
“What happened?””
There was hesitation.
“An adult came to pick Lily up.””
My grip tightened.
“Who?””
“He identified himself as a family member.””
My voice became cold.
“Who?””
“Marcus Reed.””
I stood.
“Did you let him take her?””
“No.””
I exhaled.
“Thank God.””
“But he had documentation.””
“What documentation?””
“He showed paperwork claiming he had parental rights.””
My heart started racing.
“What happened?””
“The front office contacted administration because the paperwork didn’t match our records.””
“Where is he now?””
“He left.””
“Did Lily talk to him?””
A pause.
“Yes.””
I closed my eyes.
“What did he say?””
The counselor lowered her voice.
“He told Lily he was someone who loved her.””
My hands shook.
“Did he touch her?””
“No.””
“Did he threaten her?””
“No.””
“But?””
The counselor hesitated.
“She asked him why he knew her name.””
My chest tightened.
“What did he say?””
“He told her…”
The counselor paused.
“He said, ‘Because your mother never stopped thinking about me.’”
I felt sick.
Lily’s mother.
Rachel.
He was using Rachel.
After the call ended, I sat beside Lily.
She looked at me.
“Dad?””
“Yes?””
“Who was that man?””
I carefully chose my words.
“Someone from the past.””
“Your past?””
“Yes.””
“Is he bad?””
I looked at my daughter.
The easiest answer would have been yes.
But children deserve honesty.
“I don’t know everything yet.””
She nodded.
Then whispered:
“He knew Mom.””
My heart stopped.
“What did he say?””
“He said she wanted him to find me.””
I felt anger rise.
“No.””
Lily looked surprised.
“No?””
I shook my head.
“Your mom loved you.””
“She did?””
“More than anything.””
Lily looked at the floor.
“Then why did he say she wanted him?””
I didn’t have an answer.
Because someone was trying to use a dead woman’s memory to hurt my living daughter.
That evening, I went through every document in the house.
Every file.
Every account.
Every old message.
Then I found something.
A folder hidden behind old tax papers.
Inside was a copy of Rachel’s original will.
I had seen it before.
But I had never noticed the attached page.
A legal note.
My eyes moved down the paper.
And I froze.
Because it mentioned Marcus Reed.
But not as Lily’s father.
As someone Rachel specifically wanted kept away from her daughter.
At the bottom was a signature.
Rachel’s.
And below it, a witness signature.
The second name made my blood run cold.
Because I recognized it.
Vanessa.
I stared at the page.
My wife hadn’t just known about Marcus.
She had known Rachel’s final warning.
And she hid it from me.
Then my phone rang.
Vanessa.
I answered.
“What did you hide from me?””
Silence.
Then she whispered:
“Daniel…”
“You signed Rachel’s document.””
Another silence.
Finally:
“Yes.””
“Why?””
Her voice cracked.
“Because Marcus forced me.””
“How?””
She took a shaky breath.
“Because he has proof of what I did before I married you.””
I froze.
“What did you do?””
May you like
And Vanessa said the one sentence I never expected to hear.
“I helped Marcus find Rachel.””
